3.The Assessment of Diazepam as Hypnotie on the Night Before Operation .

The hypnotic activity of diazepam was compared with that of inactive placebo in a double- blind, randomized study in 40 surgical patients the night before their scheduled procedures. Diazepam per os (10mg) produces a pattern of response that differed markedly from that of the placebo. The patient receiving diazepam fell asleep sooner, slept more soundly and steadily and more felt they had been helped to sleep, while fewer awoke during the night. The significant difference Was obtained in both hypnotic and ataractic effects between diazepam and inactive placebo. Neither diaxepam nor inactive placbo caused marked changes in vital signs or any serious side effects.

4.The Effect of Premedication with Ketorolac on Pain Relief During Chemical Peeling.

BACKGROUND: A majority of patients undergoing chemical peeling complain of pain severe enough to disturb the process of the peeling. However, there has been few controlled studies on pain control during chemical peeling. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the efficacy and safety of pretreatment with intramuscular ketorolac (Tarasyn, 30 mg) and oral diazepam(Valium, 5 mg) in comparison with control and diazepam groups, and compared the sensitivity of pain between two sexes. METHODS: The patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups; control, diazepam, and ketorolac plus diazepam groups. Pain intensity was assessed 5 times at every ten minutes from the beginning of the peeling using visual analog scale(VAS). RESULTS: At every 10 minutes of pain assessment, ketorolac plus diazepam group recorded the lowest VAS among the three groups. Except at the first 10 minutes, nificant. There was no significant difference in the pain intensity between the sexes at all five times. After application of Jessner`s solution, there was significant increase of VAS in all groups. CONCLUSION: The ketorolac pretreatment is a safe and effective modality of pain relief prior to chemical peeling without the adverse reactions.

5.Change of Serum Electrolyte Level Following Succinycholine Administration.

Succinylcholine(SCC) is well known to elevate the serum potassium level and to threaten life in some cases. In order to minimize the elevation of serum potassium following SCC, several attempts have been made such as SCC tamming and pretreatment with pancuronium or lidocaine or diazepam. Our study was undertaken to evaluate the change of serum potassium following induction in 60 patients divided into 7 different groups; group l. SCC 1mg/kg; group ll. SCC 2 mg/kg, grouplll, SCC 1mg/kg after SCC 10mg; group IV, SCC 1mg/kg after pancuronium 0.015mg/kg, group V. Pnacuronium 0.1mg/kg; group VI, SCC 1mg/kg after Lidocaine 1mg/kg; grou VII, SCC 1mg/kg after Diazepam 0.2mg/kg. The results were as follows: 1) Serum potassium were increased 0.14mEq/L in group l and 0.17 mEq/L in group ll. 2) Serum potassium were decreased in group lll, VI and VII than their control values but they were not statistically significant. 3) The decrease in serum potassium was most significant in group IV and V.

7.Optimal Dose of Lidocaine for the Prevention of Pain on Injection of Diazepam.

The purpose of this study was to define the optimum dose of lidocaine required to reduced pain on injection of diazepam. We conducted a prospective, randomized trial on l20 patients undergoing anesthesia. patients were allocated to four groups according to the lidocaine do sage: group A(control), no lidocaine; group B, lidocaine 0.1 mg/kg; group C, lidocaine 0.2 mg/kg; group D, lidocaine 0.4 mg/kg. our results sbowed that a dose of lidocaine 0.4 mg/kg significa ntly reduced the incidence of pain.

9.Immediate Changes of Plasma Potassium , Sodium and Chloride Concentrations After the Intravenous Injection of Single-Dose Diazepam .

The influence of the intravenous injection of single-dose diazepam on plasma potassium, sodium and chloride concentions was studied in 36 healthy patients undergoing minor surgical operations and this investigation was limited to the first 10 minutes after the intravenous injection of diazepam, 10mg. A significant decrease of plasma potassium concentration(-0.24 ~ -0.25 mEq/1) was observed with diazepam at 5 and 10 minutes but the diazepam investigated in this study did not have a significant effect on the plasma sodium and chloride.

10.Oculogyric Crisis after Albendazole Medication.

An oculogyric crisis which was resolved after intravenous injection of diazepam 10 mg developed in a 16-year-old girl after an oral dose of 400 mg of albendazole. Although ocular side effects of albendazole are rare, it can induce an alarming oculogyric crisis in some sensitive subjects. The mechanism of the oculogyric crisis is unclear.
