Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2007;24(3):709-712
Based on summarizing the physical features to describe the sphygmus information in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this paper surveys the methodologies of sphygmus measuring, such as single-probe measurement and multi-probe measurement based on pressure sensors, as well as measurement methods based on non-pressure sensors. It is concluded that to achieve the comprehensiveness on the sphygmus information measurement and analysis, researchers need to do further studies of the underlying mechanism and the information properties of the sphygmus. In addition, the sphygmus system should be modeled physically and mathematically.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2011;28(6):1080-1084
Lung cancer is the most common tumor and one of the malignant tumors with the lowest livability after diagnosis, as is known so far. Large-scale image database is the foundation of developing computer-aided diagnosis methods, education and training in lung cancer diagnosis to improve medical diagnostic efficiency and to reduce the doctors' burden. In this study, aiming at improving the low data storage efficiency and solving the lacking of tool for data visualization and data retrieval existing in the use of traditional Lung Image Database Consortium (LIDC) from the lung cancer database, we developed a new lung cancer image database platform including an improved data model, a data integration tool, an image and annotation visualization tool and a data retrieving component. Firstly, the data format in LIDC was analyzed and an improved information model was provided to manage and manipulate large amount data stored in it. Next, some tools such as data integration component, DICOM, image and annotation visualization tool, and data query were designed and implemented. The study demonstrated that the lung cancer image database platform had the capacity of data collection, visualization, and query, and could promote diagnose lung cancer research.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2010;27(5):1169-1172
Ultrasound imaging is a valuable tool in the detection of breast lesions, and the breast imaging and reporting data system (BI-RADS) guides the ultrasound diagnosis of breast lesion to improve the diagnosis accuracy. The research of breast ultrasound computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) with BI-RADS-US is a hot topic now. In this paper, we reviewed the research progress of breast ultrasound CAD with BI-RADS-US, summarized the present problems, and discussed the future development.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2012;29(1):59-64
A total of 20 normal newborns and 8 brain injured newborns were monitored for 2 hours with domestic digital amplitude integrated cerebral function monitor (CFM 3000) and similar imported products LECTROMED CFM 5330 simultaneously. 32 newborns with seizures or suspected seizures were monitored with CFM 3000 and conventional electroencephalogram (EEG) simultaneously. The tracings of amplitude integrated electroencephalogram (aEEG) monitored by CFM 3000 and LECTROMED CFM 5330 are similar to each other. The continuous electrical activity, sleep-wake cycle, the mean of lower or upper bound voltage and duration of broad and narrow band were no significant statistical difference between different machines; The pattern of aEEG tracing of 8 infants with brain injury monitored by CFM 3000 was the same as monitored by the LECTROMED CFM 5330. The detection rate of seizure with CFM 3000 and conventional EEG were no statistically significant difference, and the consistency with Kappa test was: Kappa = 0.552, P = 0.001. The CFM 3000 can reflect the change of cerebral function and identify infants with brain injury reliably.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2007;24(4):906-909
In view of the problem of TCM diagnosis, grey relational analysis and fuzzy cluster are applied to TCM diagnosis of hepatocirrhosis and are presented in this paper. The validity of the two methods has been assessed through 900 cases in Shanghai. The results are in good agreement with the diagnosis of hepatocirrhosis made by the expert group, thus showing the fuzzy technology is of significance to the development of TCM modernization in an objective way.

Chinese Journal of Plastic Surgery 2008;24(2):93-97
OBJECTIVETo establish the quantitative diagnostic criteria for cranio-orbito-zygomatic deformity (COZD).
METHODSComputer-assisted three-dimensional (3-D) CT measurement was performed in 30 cases with unilateral COZD. The differences of the measurement data between the affected and unaffected sides were analyzed. Then the patients were diagnosed and classified according to the affected bone, soft tissue and conjunctival sac. Based on the quantitative diagnosis, 8 patients underwent surgery to test the clinical practicability of the diagnostic criteria.
RESULTSThe quantitative diagnostic criteria for COZD could reflect the affected area and the corresponding severity of deformity. It helped to preoperative design and to predict movement of osteotomy segment and. the soft tissue volume needed for augmentation. Good postoperative results were achieved.
CONCLUSIONSThe quantitative diagnostic criteria for COZD can describe the affect area and severity of deformity in detail. It is very practical in the guidance of clinical treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the usefulness of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the automated detection of lung nodules at low-dose CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS : A CAD system developed for detecting lung nodules was used to process the data provided by 50 consecutive low-dose CT scans. The results of an initial report, a second look review by two chest radiologists, and those obtained by the CAD system were compared, and by reviewing all of these, a gold standard was established. RESULTS : By applying the gold standard, a total of 52 nodules were identified (26 with a diameter < or =5 mm; 26 with a diameter > 5 mm). Compared to an initial report, four additional nodules were detected by the CAD system. Three of these, identified only at CAD, formed part of the data used to derive the gold standard. For the detection of nodules > 5 mm in diameter, sensitivity was 77% for the initial report, 88% for the second look review, and 65% for the CAD system. There were 8.0+/-5.2 false-positive CAD results per CT study. CONCLUSION : These preliminary results indicate that a CAD system may improve the detection of pulmonary nodules at low-dose CT.

8.Using ImageJ to Evaluate Optic Disc Pallor in Traumatic Optic Neuropathy.
Sunah KANG ; Ungsoo Samuel KIM
Korean Journal of Ophthalmology 2014;28(2):164-169
PURPOSE: To evaluate optic disc pallor using ImageJ in traumatic optic neuropathy (TON). METHODS: This study examined unilateral TON patients. The optic disc was divided into 4 quadrants (temporal, superior, nasal, and inferior), consistent with the quadrants on optical coherence tomography (OCT) retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness maps. Optic disc photography was performed and disc pallor was quantified using gray scale photographic images imported into ImageJ software. The correlation between optic disc pallor and RNFL thickness was examined in each quadrant. RESULTS: A total of 35 patients (31 male, 4 female) were enrolled in the study. The mean participant age was 34.8 +/- 15.0 years (range, 5 to 63 years). Overall RNFL thickness decreased in 6 patients, with thinning most often occurring in the inferior quadrant (28 of 35 eyes). There was a significant correlation between optic disc pallor and RNFL thickness (superior, rho = -0.358, p = 0.04; inferior, rho = -0.345, p = 0.04; nasal, rho = -0.417, p = 0.01; temporal, rho = -0.390, p = 0.02). The highest level of correspondence between disc pallor and RNFL thickness values outside of the normative 95th percentiles was 39.3% and occurred in the inferior quadrant. CONCLUSIONS: Optic disc pallor in TON was quantified with ImageJ and was significantly correlated with RNFL thickness abnormalities. Thus, ImageJ evaluations of disc pallor may be useful for evaluating RNFL thinning, as verified by OCT RNFL analyses.
