PURPOSE: This study was done to identify the state of internet addiction and to investigate the relationships among internet addiction, depression and suicidal ideation in adolescents. METHOD: Participants were 1,670 high school students in an urban city. The Internet Addiction Scale was used to measure internet addiction, the DISC-MDD-SQ was used to measure depression, and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire-JR was used to measure suicidal ideation. RESULT: 38.1% of participants were perceived to be in the early stages of internet addiction and 1.5% reported heavy addiction. Overall the internet addiction scale score was 37.57(+/-12.52). The differences of internet addiction in sample characteristics were found to be significant in rank in class. The differences in DISC-MDD-SQ and IAS scores among the states of internet addiction were statistically significant. The level of internet addiction correlated positively to the level of depression and suicidal ideation. CONCLUSION: Based upon these findings, there were significant positive correlations among Internet addiction, depression, and suicidal ideation in adolescents. As schools are often the first line for the identification of potential life-threatening behaviors, nurses, especially school-based health professionals, need to be cognizant of measures and procedures for the assessment of Internet addiction, depression, and suicidal ideation.

Assessment of psychosocial and psychiatric needs is an increasingly important component of cancer care. Clinical experience with patients indicate that distress, anxiety and depression are prevalent from early stages of the illness. Strategies to enhance psychosocial care are presented and these include early identification through screening, training for healthcare staff working with cancer patients and support not only for patients but their caregivers as well.

Traditional depression research based on electroencephalogram (EEG) regards electrodes as isolated nodes and ignores the correlation between them. So it is difficult to discover abnormal brain topology alters in patients with depression. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a framework for depression recognition based on brain function network (BFN). To avoid the volume conductor effect, the phase lag index is used to construct BFN. BFN indexes closely related to the characteristics of "small world" and specific brain regions of minimum spanning tree were selected based on the information complementarity of weighted and binary BFN and then potential biomarkers of depression recognition are found based on the progressive index analysis strategy. The resting state EEG data of 48 subjects was used to verify this scheme. The results showed that the synchronization between groups was significantly changed in the left temporal, right parietal occipital and right frontal, the shortest path length and clustering coefficient of weighted BFN, the leaf scores of left temporal and right frontal and the diameter of right parietal occipital of binary BFN were correlated with patient health questionnaire 9-items (PHQ-9), and the highest recognition rate was 94.11%. In addition, the study found that compared with healthy controls, the information processing ability of patients with depression reduced significantly. The results of this study provide a new idea for the construction and analysis of BFN and a new method for exploring the potential markers of depression recognition.

PURPOSE: Current study was designed to understand the personality and emotional composition of patients with chronic constipation. Specifically, the personality differences were evaluated in the ramified subgroups based on the physiologic characteristics. METHODS: Forty patients (31 females and 9 males) of a mean age of 48 (range, 16~86) years underwent the MMPI among 310 patients with chronic constipation. MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) profiles were utilized for psychologic assessment for all patients prior to making diagnosis. Three validity scales of MMPI included L (Lie scale), F (Infrequency scale), K (Suppressor scale). Ten clinical scales included HS (hypochondriasis), DP (depression), HY (hysteria), PD (psychopathic deviant), MF (masculinity- feminity), PA (paranoia), PT (psychasthenia), SC (schizophrenia), MA (mania), SI (social introversion). On the basis of findings with use of anorectal physiologic studies, subgroups were categorized as patients with rectocele (A1, n=22), patient without rectocele (A2, n=18), patients with nonrelaxing puborectalis syndrome (B1, n=10), patients without nonrelaxing puborectalis syndrome (B2, n=30). The MMPI profiles were compared between subgroup patients. RESULTS: In overall patients, mean scores for scales HS, DP were elevated as compared with mean profiles (60~65 and 45~55, respectively). Male patients showed higher mean scores for scale SI than those of female patients (male vs. female; 63.5 vs. 53.9, P<0.05). A1 group showed higher mean scores for PD scale than those of A2 group (A1 vs. A2; 57.4 vs. 49.8, P=0.01). B1 group showed higher mean scores for DP scale than those of B2 group (B1 vs. B2; 67.5 vs. 59.8, P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Present series provided that the MMPI is a valuable tool for assessing the psychologic functioning of patients with chronic constipation. It has revealed a different personality and emotional composition in the subgroup patients based on the anorectal physiologic studies. An aspect of social introversion, psychopathic deviant and depression should be emphasized. These findings can provide the fundamental information for guideline of future diagnostic evaluation and therapy in the patients with chronic constipation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to investigate psychological factors such as eating psychopathology, depression, and obsessive-compulsion that might influence self-harm behavior in patients with eating disorders. METHODS: Patients with eating disorders (n=135) who visited "M" clinic for eating disorders participated in the study. Data were collected from March to August 2007 using the Eating Disorder Inventory-2, Beck Depression Inventory, Maudsley Obsessional-Compulsive Inventory, and Self-Harm Inventory (SHI). RESULTS: The participants scored high on self-harm as well as on depression and obsessive-compulsion. On the SHI, a high frequency of self harm behavior such as 'torturing self with self-defeating thoughts', 'abused alcohol', 'hit self', and 'suicide attempt' were found for the participants. There were significant correlations between most eating psychopathology variables, depression, obsessive-compulsion, and self-harm behavior. 'Interoceptive awareness' (eating psychopathology), depression, and 'checking' (obsessive-compulsion) were significant predictors of self-harm behavior. CONCLUSION: Future interventions for patients with eating disorders should focus on assessing the possibility of self-harm and suicidal attempts, especially in those patients with high levels of eating psychopathology, depression, or obsessive-compulsion. Early intervention for depression and obsessive-compulsion could contribute to preventing self-harm and suicide in patients with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global public health crisis, which elicits psychological problems in different population This study is to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on mental health in the front-line staff. METHODS: Patient Health Questionnare-9 (PHQ-9), Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Fatigue Self-assessment Scale (FSAS) were used to assess the depression, anxiety, and fatigue in front-line staff. RESULTS: The detection rates of depression, anxiety, and fatigue were 49.1%, 21.8%, and 76.0% among the front-line staff. The rates of depression, anxiety, and fatigue in community workers were higher than those in medical workers and other occupational staff (<0.01). The PHQ-9 of front-line staffs was negatively correlated with age, family income, family members' support, satisfaction of service objects, and sleep quality (all <0.01), while positively correlated with education level, fatigue, fear of pneumonia, and the duration of daily attention to the COVID-19 (all <0.01). SAS was negatively correlated with age, family income, family support, satisfaction of objects service, and sleep quality (all <0.01), while positively correlated with gender, fatigue, fear of pneumonia, and duration of daily attention to the COVID-19 (all <0.01). CONCLUSIONS The front-line workers should manage work and rest time reasonably to adjust their negative mood and fatigue. The government and the society should pay more attention to the psychological state of the front-line staff, particularly for the staff working in the community or villages and towns in preventing the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, front-line staff can be obtained mental intervention or be taken a rest from the high-intensive work.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of anxiety and depression state in patients with Meniere's disease, to provide objective evidence for curing Meniere's disease effectively. METHOD: Hamilton anxiety scale and Hamilton depression scale were used to quantitatively analyze the anxiety and depression state of 60 patients with untreated definite Meniere's disease and 20 normal controls. RESULT: The scores of patients with Meniere's disease was significantly higher than that of normal controls (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in scores between the males and females in Meniere's disease patients (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Patients with Meniere's disease experienced high level of anxiety and depression. The treatment should not only focus on the physiological disorder but also the psychiatric and emotional problems.

The prevalence of postnatal depression (PND) was reported to be 6.8% in an obstetric setting in Singapore. Since primary care physicians are the healthcare clinicians most likely to interact with postnatal mothers in Singapore, they are in the best position to screen for PND and help new mothers. PND affects the well-being of the mother, her baby and those around her. If left untreated, depression can result in lasting adverse outcomes such as unfavourable parenting practices, impaired mother-infant bonding, impaired intellectual and emotional development of the infant, maternal suicide, and even infanticide. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 are effective screening tools that can be easily used in primary care settings for screening at-risk mothers. Herein, we discuss the management options available in primary care settings, as well as share some local resources available to mothers and the benefits of timely intervention.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the risk factors of anxiety and depression in patients with suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) so as to achieve early intervention and better clinical prognosis. METHODS: Seventy-six patients with suspected COVID-19 in fever isolation wards of Second Hospital of Lanzhou University were enrolled From January 31, 2020 to February 22, 2020. Their clinical baseline data were collected. The anxiety of patients was assessed by Hamilton Anxiety Scale, and the depression of patients was assessed by Hamilton Depression Scale. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore the risk factors of anxiety and depression in these patients. RESULTS: Female patients are more likely to have anxiety (=3.206, 95%: 1.073-9.583, <0.05) and depression (=9.111, 95%: 2.143-38.729, <0.01) than male patients; patients with known contact history of epidemic area and personnel in epidemic area are more likely to have depression (=3.267, 95%: 1.082-9.597, <0.05). CONCLUSIONS During the isolation treatment of suspected COVID-19 patients, early psychological intervention should be carried out for the female patients with known contact history of epidemic area and personnel in epidemic area, and drug treatment should be given in advance if necessary.
