1.Study on retention and stability of linear occlusal complete dentures.
Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2003;38(1):46-48
OBJECTIVETo learn retention and stability of linear occlusal complete dentures by investigating the subjective feelings of patient and the value of retention force.
METHODSStatic retention forces of maxillary and mandibular dentures were measured for 25 patients wearing linear occlusal dentures by using Hz-1 retention dynamometer. The subjective feelings of patients in functional state were gained simultaneously through questionnaire.
RESULTSLinear occlusal dentures demonstrate good retention in static and dynamic state. Among patients with severe resorption of residual ridge (RRR), mandibular linear occlusal dentures (shown good retentive subjective feelings) demonstrate significantly smaller retention force than those with slight or medium degree of RRR. There is no correlation between the subjective feelings and the values of retention forces of mandibular dentures. The subjective feelings of patients wearing new linear occlusal dentures are much better than that of old anatomic occlusal dentures.
CONCLUSIONLinear occlusal dentures improve the performances of dentures by enhancing their stability during mastication movement.

OBJECTIVETo investigate clinical feasibility and technical features of immediate loading with linear occlusion on 2-implant-supported overdenture and to evaluate short-term effect of the treatment
METHODSSix edentulous patients with severe residual ridge resorption were enrolled. Two interforaminal implants were inserted for each patient and then immediate impressions were taken. Implant-supported bar-retained overdentures were restored for the patients within 24 hours. Clinical and radiographic examinations were conducted post-operative 1 week and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Thereafter at every 6 months the stability of implants, tissue situations around implants, radiographs and satisfaction level of patients were examined for each patient.
RESULTSSix cases and 12 implants were followed from 9 to 30 months. No implant was loosened or dropped. Sulculus bleeding index was 0-1 and probing depth of sulcus was less than 2 mm. The gingival tissues around the implants were healthy. Radiographic examination showed that bone resorption was less than 1 mm in the first year. The alveolar bone around the implants hasn't show obvious resorption stable height. Patients were satisfied with the implants.
CONCLUSIONSThe results of this study indicate that immediate loading using linear occlusion on implant-supported bar-retained overdenture is predictable in some cases and can achieve satisfaction in the short-term service. Further study is needed to assess the long-term results.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical feasibility and technical characteristics of immediate loading and to access the short-term clinical results of treatment.
METHODSThis study included 3 completely edentulous patients and 24 patients who were partially edentulous from March 1999 to December 2003. 21 implants were immediately loaded and provided support for mandibular overdenture for 3 fully edentulous patients. 30 implants were placed in 21 partially edentulous patients and implants were immediate loaded in edentulous mandibular providing support for fixed provisional prosthesis within 6 months. Then, metal-ceramic crowns were completed. All patients were followed up by 1, 3, 6, 12 months and the patients were checked every 12 months.
RESULTSA total of 42 implants were loaded immediately. From March 1999 to December 2003, no implants were lost during follow-up (range 3 to 49 months, mean of 28 months). No infections, nerve or sinus damage or other sequelae occurred. No implants exhibited peri-implant radiolucencies. Moreover, immediate loading seems to increase the ossification of the alveolar bone around endosseous implants. Patients were satisfied with the treatment.
CONCLUSIONSThe data and the experience described in this study indicate that immediate loading with restorations using appropriate surgical and restorative techniques can predicate the completely edentulous and partially edentulous mandible in some cases. Further study is needed to determine the long-term result of immediately loaded implants.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare denture wearer's evaluation and clinician's technical rating for complete denture used on edentulous patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total 43 edentulous patients who had complete denture fabricated more than one year ago were recalled. The questionnaire based on the various literatures was modified and applied to patients for subjective assessments. Functional aspects related to retention, stability, occlusion and denture condition were included in operator's evaluation. In addition, correlations were evaluated between patient's subjective and operator's objective assessments. Friedman test and Cohen's Kappa value were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: It was found that denture wearers' evaluations were slightly or fairly agree to clinician's rating for complete denture. More differences were found in maxillary denture than mandibular denture and moderate difference was found in esthetic, occlusion aspects. CONCLUSION: There were slightly or fairly agreement between subjective and objective evaluations.

Acta Medica Philippina 2019;53(6):558-563
It is difficult to make impression and fabricate conventional dentures for patients with microstomia and flat ridge. This is a case report of 53-year-old female with limited mouth opening (25 mm) who had been wearing denture for 7 years and which was recently broken. Close mouth with suction impression method was used. Proper diagnosis and appropriate set of procedures and methods were needed for this patient. The conventional complete denture fitted with closed mouth method for this condition resulted in retentive and stable denture which was inserted and removed easily.

Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2009;44(4):232-235
OBJECTIVETo investigate the reduction in residual ridges of maxillary edentulous models duplicated from old and new complete dentures using the 3-D data analysis.
METHODSTwenty-six pairs of maxillary edentulous models copied from the fitting surfaces of new and old upper complete dentures were selected for this study. The 3-D data were collected with a laser scanning system. The data were matched using Geomagic Studio 8 and Rapidform2006 software and then the fitting surfaces of new complete dentures were analyzed in comparison with old ones.
RESULTSThe total amount of morphologic change of fitting surface [(39.8+/-14.2)%] was greater than the change of width [(28.2+/-16.0)%]; the area reduction of the residual ridge in anterior region [(43.0+/-15.2)%] was larger than that in posterior region [(36.1+/-14.1)%]; and the area reduction of residual ridge in buccal aspect [(42.9+/-13.8)%] was larger than that in lingual aspect [(35.5+/-15.2)%]. All the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe results of this study reveal that 3-D analysis of the whole change of the residual ridge is significant and verify that the residual ridge resorption of edentulous maxilla in three dimensions is greater in buccal aspect than in lingual aspect and greater in anterior region than in posterior region.

The Journal of Korean Academy of Prosthodontics 1998;36(4):566-580
Implant-supported overdenture is known as a useful appliance, instead of using the conventional complete denture, for better retention and stability. In this study 4 types of materials such as, gold bar/plastic clip(group AuP), gold bar/metal clip(group AuM), palladium bar/plastic clip(group PdP), and palladium bar/metal clip(group PdM) were used to evaluate the retention forces according to the type of clips and alloys used for bar fabrication, in the Hader bar system. Repeated insertions and removals of overdenture were conducted in each group, and the retention forces were measured and compared the data of each group according to the number of insertion and removal. The obtained results were as follows, 1. In the comparison of retention forces according to type of bar-clip, retention was increased in the order of group AuM, PdM, PdP, AuP, and the retention force of group AuM was significantly increased compared with those of others(p<0.05). 2. In the comparison of retention forces according to the number of insertion, only group PdP showed significant decrease in retention(p<0.05). 3. In the comparison of retention forces according to the type of bar and clip, there was no significant difference in the type of bar, but the retention of plastic clip was significantly higher than that of metal clip when Au bar was used(p<0.05). 4. In the observation of the bar surface, group AuM using Au bar and metal clip showed the most scratches among bar groups.
