Biological mass spectrometry has been developed for the largE-scale protein identification. The successful identification of protein in proteomic study is based on an effective match of MS data to the sequence in database. Because of the diversity and heterogeneity of protein modification, the experimental data obtained by mass spectrometry does not match the theoretical value sometimes, which makes about 90 percent or more of the tandem mass spectra not be effectively identified. This has become one of the most important technique issues to be resolved in current proteome research. The N-terminal cyclization of peptides, as one of a variety of modification introduced in sample preparation, has been preliminarily studied in this work. The result showed that N-terminal cyclization occurred at the most of the glutamine(Q) or carbamoylmethyl-cysteine(CAM_C) residues and the reaction is often incomplete or partial, both types of peptides could often exist in its respective state at the same time, and the behavior of modified peptides in revered phase chromatography is also changed. The success rate of protein identification could be obviously improved if adding the N-terminal cyclization modification in the database searching. These results will be very helpful in the mass spectrometric data analysis of proteomic study.

AIM: To measure and compare the content of glycyrrhizic polysaccharides in Glycyrrhiza in three different growth time. METHODS: The contents of polysaccharides were determined by phenol-sulfuric acid method and by reference to glucose, and wavelenth in spectrophotometer was set at 490 nm. RESULTS: There was difference of the content of the extracted polysaccharides among Glycyrrhiza for 1, 2 and 3 year, amounted to 11.75%, 11.07%, 7.88%, respectively. Glioblastoma is a malignant tumor in central nervous system, which has strong invasion, poor prognosis and short survival time. At present, the main treatment strategy of glioblastoma is surgical excision, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, due to incomplete resection and high recurrence rate, it is urgent to find novel therapeutic method for glioblastoma. Photodynamic therapy, as a promising non-surgical treatment, provides a new strategy for postoperative adjuvant therapy of glioblastoma. This review summarizes the mechanism and clinical application of photodynamic therapy mediated by various photosensitizers in glioblastoma, in order to provide help for the treatment of glioblastoma.

Objective To investigate the activity change pattern and corresponding significance of gly- colytic enzymes including alsolase A(ALDA)and lactate dehydrogenase M(LDH-M)regulated by hy- poxia-inducible factor 1?(HIF-1?)in spinal cord injury(SCI)of rats.Methods SD rats were ran- domly divided into control group and groups at 12 hours,1,2 and 3 days,1 and 2 weeks after compres- sive SCI,in which the activity changes of ALDA and LDH-M in the injured spinal cord were observed at different time points by means of enzyme histochemistry.Results Opitical density(A)value of AL- DA continued significant increase from two days to one week after SCI(P＜0.05)and decreased gradual- ly at 2 weeks after SCI.A value of LDH-M began significant increase at day 1 after SCI and recovered to normal level at 2 weeks after SCI(P＜0.05).Conclusion Activities of ALDA and LDH-M regulated by HIF-1?in spinal cord injury is significantly increased.

To investigate the chemical constituents of the whole plants of Bidens bipinnata, the separation and purification of constituents were performed by chromatography on macroporous resin, silica gel, MCI and Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data as quercetin (1), quercetin-3-0-alpha-L-rhamnoside (2), keampferol-3-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3), keampferol-3-O-alpha-L-rhamnoside (4), 3', 5-dyhydroxy-3, 6, 4'-trimethoxyl -7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside flavonoid (5), 7, 8, 3', 4'-tetraflavanone(6), (2S)- and (2R)-isookanin-7-O-beta-D- glucopyranoside (7a/7b), (2S)- and (2R)-3'-methoxy-isookanin-8-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (8a/8b), 6, 7, 3', 4'-tetrahydroxyaurone(9), maritimetin (10), esculetin (11), 3-O-caffeoyl-2-methyl-d-erythrono-1, 4-lactone (12), (7S, 8R) balanophonin-4-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (13), eugenyl-O-beta-apiofuranosyl-( 1"-6') -O-beta-glucopyranoside (14), and (+)-syringaresinol-4'-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (15). Compounds 8, 13, 14, and 15 were isolated from this genus for the first time. Compounds 1 and 6 were potent inhibitors against HSC-T6 cells in vitro and compounds 1, 2, 6, and 7 were capable of decreasing the inflammatory cytokine production of macrophage cells in vitro.

Objective To investigate the relationship between resting heart rate (RHR) and coronary heart disease (CHD) and to explore the value of RHR in predicting the occurrence of acute coronary syndrome. Methods 445 patients with CHD were divided into stable angina group and acute coronary syndrome group. RHR, risk factors for coronary heart disease and their correlation were analyzed. Results RHR was higher in the acute coronary syndrome group than in the stable angina group (P<0.01). Logistic regression analysis showed that RHR (OR =1.052, 95% CI: 1.009~1.097, P=0.017), systolic blood pressure (OR=1.027, 95% CI: 1.003~1.053, P=0.031) and hyperglycemia (OR=2.743, 95% CI: 1.207~6.233, P=0.016) were independent risk factors for acute coronary syndrome. Conclusion RHR is an independent risk factor for incidence of acute coronary syndrome.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the diagnosis and surgical treatment of obstructive azoospermia.

METHODSWe analyzed the clinical data of 56 cases of obstructive azoospermia, 43 of them with ejaculatory duct obstruction (EDO), and the other 13 suspected of epididymal obstruction. The diagnostic methods included semen analyses, measurement of fructose and neutral alpha-glucosidase in the seminal plasma, transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS), and vasography when necessary. The 43 patients with EDO were treated by transurethral resection of the ejaculatory duct (TURED), and 11 of the 13 cases of suspected epididymal obstruction were confirmed by scrotal exploration and underwent either bilateral or unilateral vasoepididymostomy. The patients were followed up for 3 -51 months for postoperative semen quality and impregnation.

RESULTSOf the 43 azoospermia patients with EDO treated by TURED, 36 (83.7%) showed improved semen parameters and 11 (25.6%) achieved pregnancies. Among the 11 cases of azoospermia with confirmed epididymal obstruction treated by vasoepididymostomy, 6 (54.5%) had sperm in the semen assay and 3 (27.3%) achieved pregnancies.

CONCLUSIONSemen analyses, measurement of fructose and neutral alpha-glucosidase in the seminal plasma, TRUS and vasography are important diagnostic methods for obstructive azoospermia. TURED is effective for azoospermia with EDO, while vasoepididymostomy is preferable for the treatment of azoospermia with epididymal obstruction.

OBJECTIVETo elaborate on the angiographic classification of central arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in jaws, and to evaluate the correlation between this classification and treatment options.

METHODSX-ray films and angiograms of 25 cases with AVMs in the jaw were retrospectively reviewed to evaluate the appearance of radiolucency, feeding arteries, nidus of the malformations and draining veins. Based on the findings a classification of angioarchitecture was recommended. Furthermore, the treatment results of these cases were reviewed to assess the correlation between this classification and treatment options.

RESULTSThe angiographic pictures of 25 cases with central AVMs could be divided into five types: type I (n = 5) was with merely diffused micro-arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs); type II (n = 8) demonstrated a large venous pouch, all the feeding arteries drained into it; type III (n = 7) had a large venous pouch together with diffused micro-AVFs (I + II); type IV (n = 2) had multiple venous pouches; type V (n = 3) had multiple venous pouches and diffused micro-AVFs (I + IV). The angioarchitecture corresponded well to the radiographic appearance in all except one case. With respect to the treatment, type II, III, IV AVMs gained clinical cure in 100% of cases, whereas type I and type V AVMs obtained clinical cure only in 3 of 5 and 1 of 3 cases respectively.

CONCLUSIONSCentral AVMs in jaws exhibited variant patterns of angioarchitecture, which could be divided into five types. Elaboration of this classification was helpful for decision-making on choosing appropriate therapy.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the dynamic correlation between pre-S1 antigen, pre-S2 antigen and HBV DNA in the serum of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients undergoing nucleoside analogue therapy.

METHODS12 CHB patients with transient virological response after lamivudine treatment, and 20 patients treated with adefovir for 5 years were recruited in this study. Serum samples were collected at four time points when HBV DNA fluctuated sharply during lamivudine treatment, and at 0, 8, 12, 28, 52, 104, 156, 208, 260 weeks following adefovir treatment. HBV DNA was quantified by real-time PCR, pre-S1 and pre-S2 antigens were detected by ELISA.

RESULTSThe titers of pre-S1 and pre-S2 antigens were not correlated with the HBV DNA level in the serum of lamivudine treated patients. Only in one case of the adfovir treated patients, the decrease of pre-S1 and pre-S2 antigens was in parallel with the decrease of HBV DNA. Linear regression analysis indicated that neither pre-S1 antigen nor pre-S2 antigen was correlated with HBV DNA in the serum of lamivudine or adfovir treated patients (P more than 0.05).

CONCLUSIONOur results indicate that the titers of pre-S1 and pre-S2 antigens are not correlated with the serum HBV DNA in CHB patients undergoing nucleoside analogue therapy. Neither pre-S1 nor pre-S2 is a good predictor for the outcome of nucleoside analogue treatment.
