Objective To analyze the ultrasonic features of thyroid microcarcinoma (TMC) and the causes of misdiagnosis. Methods The ultrasonic features including shape, margin, echogenecity, microcalcification, vascularity and lymphadenopathy were analyzed retrospectively in 26 pathologically-proven TMC patients. Results In 26 cases, 11 cases were diagnosed correctly before operation (11/26, 42.31%), 12 cases were misdiagnosed (12/26, 46.15%) as adenoma or benign nodule, and 3 cases were missed diagnosed (3/26, 11.54%). Among the 23 cases detected on ultrasound, 21 cases were solid and hypoechoic (21/23, 91.30%);19 cases were ill-defined (19/23, 82.61%);12 cases were taller than wide in shape (12/23, 52.17%); 14 cases had microcalcification (14/23, 60.87%); 7 cases showed central or peripheral blood flow signals (7/23,30.43%) with arterial resistance index>0.70 in 3 lesions and<0.70 in 4 lesions. Conclusions Several ultrasonographic features are helpful in identiifcation of TMC, including hypo/iso-echogenecity, ill-deifned margin, taller-than-wide shape, microcalciifcation, arterial signals with high resistance index, and abnormal lymphadenopathy. Moreover, for cases with multiple lesions, to the potential co-existence of benign and malignant lesions should be considered.

Objective To research the curative effect of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine on Kashin-Beck disease(KBD). Methods According to Diagnosis for Kashin-Beck disease,80 patients of adult KBD were detected from Guanghui village Shangzhi city Heilongjiang province in July,2007,and they divided into treatment group and control group according to their condition, age and sex,40 person in each group. Treatment group was given chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate, and control group was given placebo(equivalent amount of starch). Bilateral knees X-ray films were shot before and after treatment (8th month),scale division magnifying glass was used to measure the width of joint space on X-ray films. Results The width of joint space respectively was (4.30±2.14) and (4.10±2.07)mm in control group before and after treatment, and treatment group respectively was (4.17±2.15),(4.16±2.11)mm. Medicine had no obviously role on joint space (F = 0.50,P > 0.05),Time and both of time and medicine had obvious role on joint space(F= 67.66,46.74,all P< 0.05). Joint space of treat group was thinner than control group(P < 0.05) before treatment, but thicker after treatment(P < 0.05). To compare with the width of before treatment, joint space width of control group became obviously narrow(P < 0.05). Conclusions Experimental group taking chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine sulfate alleviated knee joint space narrowing process of adults KBD patients compared with control group. It plays a protection role in articular cartilage and provides evidences for choosing drug and evaluating effect in the treatment of adults KBD.

OBJECTIVETo explore the feasibility of transfecting recombinant Sp1 into hypertrophic scar fibroblasts and investigate the proliferation and collagen I, III synthesis in the transfected cells.
METHODSRecombinant human Sp1 was transfected into hypertrophic scar fibroblasts with the karyocyte expressive vector. The expression of Sp1, collagen I, III mRNA was tested by real time PCR. The change of cell proliferation was observed with CCK8 colorimeter.
RESULTSAbout 30% of transfected hypertrophic scar fibroblasts showed green fluorescence positive. The relative expression of Sp1 mRNA in transfected cells, empty-vector cell or untransfected cells group was 5.26 +/- 0.76, 1.08 +/- 0.18, 1.09 +/- 0.15, respectively, showing a significant difference between thansfected and untransfected cells or between the transfected cells and empty-vector group (P <0.01, n = 5). Expression of collagen I, III mRNA was 2.49 +/- 0.40 and 1.88 +/- 0.30 in transfected cells, 0.96 +/- 0.18 and 0.95 +/- 0.18 in empty-vector cell, and 0.97 +/- 0.15 and 0.93 +/- 0.13 in untransfected cells, respectively, showing a significant difference between thansfected and untransfected cells or between the transfected cells and empty-vector group (P < 0.01, n = 5).
CONCLUSIONSThe hypertrophic scar fibroblasts could be as the target cells of Sp1 gene transfection. Sp1 gene may play an important role in abnormal collagen metabolism in hypertrophic scar.

BACKGROUNDSevoflurane preconditioning (SP) has been shown to invoke potent myocardial protection in animal studies and clinical trials. However, the mechanisms underlying SP are complex and not yet well understood. We investigated the hypothesis that the cardioprotection afforded by SP is mediated via the Wnt/glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β)/β-catenin signaling pathway.
METHODSTwo models were established: a Langendorff perfused rat heart model and the H9C2 cell hypoxia/reoxygenation model. Both rats and H9C2 cells were randomly divided into 6 groups as follows: S group, ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) group, DMSO group, IWP group, SP group, and SP + IWP group. Hemodynamic parameters, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity in coronary effluent and cell culture supernatant, and the infarct size were measured to evaluate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injuries. To determine the activity of Wnt/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway, the expressions of Wnt3a, phospho-GSK3β, and β-catenin were measured by Western blotting.
RESULTSSP improved cardiac function recovery, reduced infarct size (18 ± 2% in the SP group compared with 35 ± 4% in the I/R group; P < 0.05), decreased LDH activity in coronary effluent, and culture supernatant. IWP-2, an inhibitor of Wnt, abolished the cardioprotection by SP. In addition, Western blotting analysis demonstrated that the expressions of Wnt3a, phospho-GSK3β, and β-catenin significantly (P < 0.05) increased in the I/R group, compared with the S group; and compared to I/R group, SP significantly (P < 0.05) increased Wnt3a, phospho-GSK3β, and β-catenin expressions. Pretreatment with IWP-2 significantly (P < 0.05) abolished SP-induced Wnt/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling activation.
CONCLUSIONSThe results showed for thefirst time that cardioprotection afforded by SP may be mediated partly via the Wnt/GSK3β/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Objective To explore the anti-inflammatory action of Heshi Yangshen Recipe on rat model of nephrotic syndrome induced by adriamycin. Methods Rat model of nephrotic syndrome was established by tail venous injection of one-dose of adriamycin. SD rats were divided into normal group(N = 10),model group(N =11), positive control group (N = 12), and high-, middle- , low-dose Chinese medicine groups (N = 12, respectively). Two weeks after modeling, rats in the normal group and model group were given gastric gavage of same volume of normal saline, rats in positive control group were given gastric gavage of benazepril aqueous solution at a dose of 10 mg·kg-1·d-1 in the former period of 15 days and at 10 mg·kg-1·d-1 in the later period of 20 days, and rats in high-,middle- ,low-dose groups were given gastric gavage of Heshi Yangshen Recipe at a dosage of 33.26, 16.63, 8.32 g·kg-1·d-1 respectively, for 30 continuous groups. During the treatment period, the general situation of rats was observed. After the completion of medication, the levels of 24-hour urinary protein, urine total proteins, urine creatinine were measured by biochemical analyzer, serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) level was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA),and the expression levels of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1)and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1)in rat renal tissue of various groups were determined by immunohistochemistry. Results The increase of body mass in all of the modeled rats was significantly slowed down (P < 0.01 as compared with the normal group). Compared with the normal group, the levels of 24-hour urinary protein, serum hs-CRP, and the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in rat renal tissue were increased in the model group (P < 0.05 or P <0.01). Compared with the model group, the level of 24-hour urinary protein in the positive control group and high-dose Chinese medicine group was decreased (P < 0.05), and the levels of serum Hs-CRP, and the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in rat renal tissue of the positive control group and high-,middle-,low-dose Chinese medicine groups were decreased (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). Conclusion Heshi Yangshen Recipe exerts certain anti-inflammatory action, and its mechanism may be related with the decrease of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression. High dosage of Heshi Yangshen Recipe has the strongest therapeutic effect.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of Compound Xuanju Capsule (CXC) combined with bromocriptine on hyperprolactinemia-induced erectile dysfunction (ED).
METHODSWe randomly assigned 46 patients with hyperprolactinemia-induced ED to receive bromocriptine (trial group, n = 23) and bromocriptine plus CXC (control group, n = 23), respectively, both for 12 weeks. Then we compared the two groups of patients in erectile function and the levels of serum prolactin and testosterone.
RESULTSAfter 12 weeks of treatment, the IIEF-5 scores were significantly improved in both the trial and the control groups as compared with the baseline (19.5 +/- 4.1 vs 13.0 +/- 3.8 and 16.4 +/- 3.7 vs 13.7 +/- 3.5, P<0.05), the level of serum prolactin was remarkably decreased ([156.07 +/- 26.31] vs [478.35 +/- 62.28] mIU/L and [164.73 +/- 28.58] vs [445.26 +/- 57.83] mIU/L, P<0.05), while the level of serum testosterone was markedly increased ([15.34 +/- 5.27] vs [3.80 +/- 1.09] nmol/L and [12.02 +/- 2.36] vs [4.07 +/- 1.25] nmol/L, P<0.05). Post-treatment erectile function was significantly better in the trial than in the control group (P<0.05), and the post-treatment serum testosterone level remarkably higher in the former than in the latter (P<0.05), but there was no significant difference in the serum prolactin level after treatment between the two groups (P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe combination of Compound Xuanju Capsule and bromocriptine is highly effective in the treatment of hyperprolactinemia-induced ED, and its effect is even better than that of bromocriptine alone.
