Objective To compare the vibrating perception threshold (VPT) between normal subjects and subjects with cervical spondylosis of nerve root type, and to observe the clinical efficacy of acupoint injection at Quyuan (SI13) in releasing pain in cervical spondylosis of nerve root type.Method Sixty-three patients with cervical spondylosis of nerve root type were recruited and randomized into a treatment group of 35 cases and a control group of 28 cases. The treatment group received acupoint injection at Quyuan, and the control group received acupoint injection at Jiaji (EX-B2) points. The short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) was adopted. From the questionnaire, the Pain Rating Index (PRI), sensory (S), affective (A), and total (T) pain rating indexes, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Present Pain Index (PPI) were used to comprehensively evaluate the pain improvement and to quantify the therapeutic efficacy, and the VPT was also considered. The Clinical Assessment Scale for Cervical Spondylosis (CASCS) by West China Rehabilitation Center was also used to analyze the result in the treatment group.Result After the intervention, the MPQ and VAS scores in the treatment group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate of the treatment group was significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.05). Meanwhile, the VPT was improved after the treatment. Conclusion Acupoint injection at Quyuan can produce a more significant efficacy than at Jiaji (EX-B2) in treating cervical spondylosis of nerve root type.

Objective To investigate the protective effects of ethyl docosahexaenoate on brain oxidative injury and edema induced by cerebral ischemic/reperfusion in gerbils. Methods The gerbils were subjected to both common carotid arteries occlusion. The contents of MDA and GSH, the activities of GSH-PX, CAT, SOD and ATPase, the water content and the concentrations of Na + and Ca 2+ were measured. Histopathological examination was also done. Results The pretreatment with E-DHA significantly prevented the raise of MDA level, the decline of GSH content, the activities of GSH-Px, CAT, ATPase and the increases of Ca 2+, Na + and water content. Conclusion E-DHA has protective effect on brain ischemic injury and edema, which may be due to an inhibitory action on hydroxyl radical formation and brain edema.

Objective To investigate the roles of heavy metals in the onset of Alzheimer 's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) and to analyze the relationship between cognitive impairment and plasma heavy metal concentrations in patients with AD. Methods Fifty patients with AD, 20 with VaD, and 20 healthy controls were included in the study. According to the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), the AD patients were divided into mild dementia (CDR = 1 )and moderate to severe dementia (CDR = 2 to 3 ) groups. All the observational subjects performed the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, Hachinski ischemic index score, and CDR score. A fasting venous blood sample was taken from all the subjects for detection of the heavy metal (Tu, Ca, Fe, Me, Zn, Hg, Cr, Co, Se, and Pb) concentrations at the same time. Results Compared to the control group, the plasma Cu concentration in the mild dementia and moderate to severe dementia groups increased significantly (0. 66 ± 0. 2 1, 0. 84 ± 1.11, and 0. 85 ± 1.12 ng/g, respectively (P < 0. 05). There was no significant difference between the mild AD group and the moderate to severe dementia group. The Pb concentration in the control group was significantly lower than that in the moderate to severe dementia group (22.79 ±3.94 ng/gvs. 40. 82 ± 16.96 ng/g, P < 0. 05 ). While there were no significant differences between the control and the mild dementia and moderate to severe dementia groups. The plasma Cu concentration (0.84 ± 1.25 ng/g vs. 0. 66 ± 0.21 ng/g, P << 0. 05) and Pb concentration (32.42 ± 14. 12 ng/gvs. 22.79 ± 3.94 ng/g, P < 0. 05) in the AD group were significantly higher than that in the control group. While there was no significant difference between the VaD group and the control group for metal concentrations. There was also no significant difference for metal concentrations hetween the VaD group and the AD group. Conclusions Some heavy metals, such as Cu and Pb might have participated in the pathogenic process of AD, but the heavy metal concentrations did not have close relationship with the onset of VaD. There was no significant correlation between the degree of cognitive impairment and the plasma metal concentrations in patients with AD.

The difficulty in the participant recruitment is the common question in acupuncture clinical trial study. The existing recruitment of clinical trial is most applicable for the clinical trial of medicines. Because the intervention of acupuncture clinical trial is different from that of medicines, characterized as the specialties in "theory, principle, acupoints, technique", it is very necessary to develop the strategy on the participant recruitment in acupuncture clinical trial. The free community medical consultation is one of the important means of recruitment. In the paper, by taking the participant recruitment of acupuncture clinical trial on chronic stable angina pectoris as the example, the discussion is given on the strategy on the recruitment of free community medical consultation in the aspects of feasible investigation of recruitment approach, recruitment plan, participant screening, etc. The revisiting after the free community medical consultation is the important approach to the improvement of successful recruitment. This strategy on the recruitment of free community medical consultation is highly practical and improves the successful rate and compliance of the participant recruitment. Hence, this strategy deserves to be promoted.

OBJECTIVETo explore the genetic etiology of three families affected with split-hand/split-foot malformation (SHFM).
METHODSPeripheral venous blood samples from 21 members of pedigree 1, 2 members of pedigree 2, and 2 members of pedigree 3 were collected. PCR-Sanger sequencing, microarray chip, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), real-time PCR, and next-generation sequencing were employed to screen the mutations in the 3 families. The effect of the identified mutations on the finger (toe) abnormality were also explored.
RESULTSMicroarray and real-time PCR analysis has identified a duplication in all patients from pedigrees 1 and 3, which have spanned FKSG40, TLX1, LBX1, BTRC, POLL and FBXW4 (exons 6-9) and LBX1, BTRC, POLL and FBXW4 (exons 6-9) genes, respectively. A missense mutation of the TP63 gene, namely c.692A>G (p.Tyr231Cys), was found in two patients from pedigree 2. FISH analysis of chromosome 10 showed that the rearrangement could fita tandem duplication model. However, next-generation sequencing did not identify the breakpoint.
CONCLUSIONThe genetic etiology for three families affected with SHFM have been identified, which has provideda basis for genetic counseling and guidance for reproduction.

OBJECTIVETo investigate effect of Activ L total lumbar disc replacement on lumbar sagittal alignment.
METHODSThe imaging data of patients with degenerative disc disease received Activ L total lumbar disc replacement at Department of Orthopedics, Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital, Capital Medical University from March 2009 to March 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. The average age was 45.6 years(range, 35-60 years)and the surgery levels were as follows: L3-4 2 cases, L4-5 15 cases, L5/S1 5 cases, L3-4+ L4-5 3 cases, L4-5+ L5/S1 7 cases. All patients were followed up for 15 to 63 months(average, 32 months). Radiographic parameters such as lumbar lordosis angle(LL), segment lordosis angle(SL) and sacral slope angle(SS) were recorded. All the radiographic parameters were compared using one-way ANOVA at different stage. Lumbar lordosis angle of the two-level was compared with the one of one-level by using independent sample t-test before and after the operation. A partial correction test was carried out to determine the corrections between the parameters preoperatively, one month after the operation and at final follow-up.
RESULTSOne month after the operation, the lumbar lordosis angle decreased by an average of 1.8°, but there was no statistically significant(P>0.05). Compared with one month postoperation, the lumbar lordosis angle increased by an average of 6.8°(P<0.05), which also increased a lot compared with preoperation(P<0.05). The value of segment lordosis angle was rising up from preoperation to the final follow-up(P<0.05), so was the value of sacral slope angle, but there was no statistically significant between different stage(P>0.05). The lumbar lordosis angle showed no significant difference between double-level ones and single-level ones at different stage(P<0.05). The lumbar lordosis angle showed positive correlation with the sacral slope(P<0.001), however, the lumbar lordosis angle showed no corrected with the segment angle all the time(P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe total lumbar disc replacement with Activ L prosthesis had contributed to maintain and improve the lumbar alignment in the short and medium term. Double- or single-level total lumbar disc replacement had no significant effect on the value of lumbar lordosis angle. The lumbar lordosis angle showed positive correlation with the sacral slope all the time with no correlation between lumbar lordosis angle and sacral slope.
