Objective To describe the exercise participation of residents in China,and to provide the scientific basis for developing intervention strategies.Method The data of 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey was used for the analysis.66 682 subjects(male 32 287,female 34 395) aged 6 years and above were involved.Results The overall rate of exercise participation of people in China was 15.7%,while that of urban residents(27.5%) was higher than that of the rural counterparts(11.1%).of all age-groups,18～years group had the lowest rate of exercise participation.8.0% people engaged in regular exercise while 7.7% people in occasional exercise.More urban residents(16.8%) engaged in regular exercise than their rural counterparts did(4.5%).The rates of regular exercise of residents in 6～years and 13～years groups were lower than those of occasional exercise,but the rates of regular exercise of people in 18～yrs,45～yrs and over 60～yrs groups were higher than those of occasional exercise.The types of exercise varied obviously among different age groups.Conclusion The rate of exercise participation of people in China is quite low.The guideline for physical activity of different target population in China should be developed in order to improve their participating rate of exercise and improve their health.

BACKGROUND:Intervertebral disc degeneration is the pathological basis of degenerative spinal diseases. Studies on the influentialfactors of intervertebral disc degeneration contribute to the prevention and treatment of degenerative spinal disease.
OBJECTIVE:To observe the growth and proliferation of nucleus pulposus cels isolated by trypsin plus type II colagenase digestion in complete medium with different glucose concentrations, exploring the optimal glucose concentration for growth of nucleus pulposus cels.
METHODS:Nucleus pulposus cels isolated and cultured by trypsin plus type II colagenase digestion method were observed under an inverted microscope, and thecelnumber was counted. Morphology of nucleus pulposus cels was observed afterhematoxylin-eosinstaining and toluidine blue staining. Colagen type II immunoreactivity was detected by immunohistochemical staining combined with immunofluorescent staining.Nucleus pulposuscels were incubated in complete medium containing various glucose concentrations (0, 6.25, 12.5, 17.5, and 25 mmol/L) for 24 hours, and then cel proliferation and apoptosis were determined.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The stained nucleus pulposus cels showed polygonal and short spindle, with one or two nuclei. Celularpseudopod appeared gradualy and then became slim with increased passage numbers. The isolated and cultured nucleus pulposus cels positively expressed colagen type II and aggrecanProliferative activity of nucleus pulposus cels cultured in medium with 17.5 mmol/L glucose was significantly higher than that in medium with 0 and 25 mmol/L glucose (P< 0.05 orP< 0.01). There wasno significant differencein cel apoptosis between these groups except for 0 mmol/L glucose (P<0.05). These results confirm that a large number of nucleus pulposus celscan beharvested by trypsin plustype II colagenase digestion and the optimal glucose concentration is 17.5 mmol/L.

BACKGROUND:Early clinical application of non-biological materials (bone cement) for treatment of hip joint is ineffective, due to the large fixed range, long fixation time, as wel as aging and rupture of bone cement interface causing complications such as prosthetic loosening. Thus, postoperative range of motion of the hip joint can be affected to some degree.
OBJECTIVE:To investigate the methods and progress of biological and non-biological materials for total hip replacement and to assess the features and clinical application of different hip prostheses.
METHODS:A computer-based search of PubMed and CNKI was performed by the first author to retrieve articles related to biological materials and tissue-engineered hip joint using the keywords of“carpal bone, fracture ununited”in the title and abstract. The keywords were limited to Chinese and English.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Biological materials for internal fixation have good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Currently, the combination of metal joint head and polyethylene acetabulum with ultrahigh molecular weight is the most commonly used in hip replacement. However, the metal joint head exhibits an elastic modulus far from the human skeleton, resulting in stress shielding effects which are easy to cause prosthetic loosening and instability. Bio-inert ceramics has high in vivo stability and good mechanical strength;and bioactive ceramics has bone conduction characteristics and performance of the living bone integration. Composite prosthesis, because of adjustable elastic modulus and sufficient mechanical strength, shows the mechanical properties close to the human bone and has been gradual y noticed. However, there is a lack of ideal prostheses with good biocompatibility and biomechanics. Therefore, hip design and manufacturing processes should be improved to elevate wear resistance and mechanical properties, to enhance the binding between prosthesis and the host bone, and to reduce stress shielding in order to improve the biocompatibility of the implant with the host, and extend the prosthetic life.

BACKGROUND:Artificial lumbar disc replacement is a new choice for the treatment of degenerative disc disease, and preserves lumbar vertebra’s biomechanical characteristics during pain elimination. The design of the prosthesis structure and material needs further study and validation. OBJECTIVE:To review the structure and material types of presently designed artificial lumbar discs, then to discuss the trends in the optimization design of prosthesis. METHODS:The PubMed database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database and Chinese BioMedical Literature Database were searched for related articles concerning artificial lumbar disc and type and biomechanics of nucleus pulposus prosthesis material published from January 2005 to February 2013 by the first author. Key words were“artificial lumbar disc, principle of prosthesis design, structure, material, clinical trials”in Chinese and“artificial lumbar disc, total disc replacement, structure, material, clinical trial”in English. Repetitive and old studies were excluded. 135 articles were found, but 36 articles were included for review. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:At present, the materials for intervertebral discs include cobalt-chromium al oy, ceramics, stainless steel, titanium al oy and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. Artificial lumbar disc is commonly made by different materials. Bryan prosthesis is most commonly used in the clinic. Three-dimensional finite element analysis, in vitro trial and clinical studies verified its good biomechanical property. The successful rate of replacement was high. Nucleus prosthesis contains prefabricated type and situ polymerization type, and obtains smal injury, so it is a hot focus in present study, but it cannot achieve biomechanical function of human nucleus pulposus. To dig novel material is a future direction for designing individual prosthesis. The prosthetic structure and biomaterial design experience constant improvement and development. This study combines latest study trend and prospects the development of biomimetic design, material improvement, the optimization design of prosthesis and assisted devices.

BACKGROUND:With the continuous development of nanotechnology, a growing number of nanotechnologies have been used in the field of biological medicine, providing a great deal of interest for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. OBJECTIVE:To review the research situation of nanobiomaterials and its application in biological medicine. METHODS: The articles about nanobiomaterials and nano bioceramic materials were retrieved from Chinese Journal Ful-text Database, PubMed and Wanfang database published during January 2000 to October 2014 by the first author using computer. Key words were “nano, bioceramics” in Chinese and English, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: With the development of nanotechnology, some nanotechnologies have entered the stage of practical application. Application of nanotechnology plays a preventive effect to the occurrence and development of disease. Nano-ceramic significantly increases the strength, toughness and superplasticity of materials, overcomes many deficiencies of biological ceramics, and has been widely used in the field of orthopedics, such as artificial joints, artificial bones, bone filing material, bone replacement materials, artificial vertebrae and so on.

Objective: To analyze the drinking practice of people in China. Method: The data of 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey was used for this study. 159 117 subjects aged 15 years and over were involved. The information on drinking practice was collected using interview-administrated questionnaire. Results: The overall current drinking rate of people in China was 21.0%, 39.6% for male and 4.5% for female, respectively. The current drinking rates in urban and rural areas were 20.9% and 21.0%, respectively. The 45 to 59 years age group reached the highest. The rate of onset age of drinking younger than 18 years old was 8.8% in current drinkers. 39.9% male and 29.5% female current drinkers drank at least once a day. Distilled spirits was the first choice for 50.3% current drinkers. 58.2% male drinkers and 77.3% female drinkers consumed 100-150g and 50-100g distilled spirits, respectively. Conclusion: Alcohol drinking has become a public health problem in China, it is necessary to carry out further surveys to reveal the influencing factors.

Objective: To design the “one-year physical activity questionnaire” used in 2002 China National Nutrition and Health Survey. Methods: The intensity of each activity in the questionnaire was assessed from literature review and experts consultation. The energy intake was calculated from food frequency questionnaire for validation of the physical activity questionnaire. Results: The average daily energy expenditure per capita estimated from the questionnaire was 11.6MJ (male 11.9MJ, female 11.2MJ). Objective To introduce a novel femoral distractor which is applied in close reduction and internal fixation (CRIF) with antegrade intramedullary nail for femoral shaft fractures.Methods From September 2010 to March 2015,85 patients with femoral shaft fracture were treated by CRIF with antegrade intramedullary nail in which our self-designed novel distractor was used.They were 64 males and 21 females,with an average age of 36.6 years.By AO classification,we had 32 cases of type 32-A,40 cases of type 32-B,and 13 cases of type 32-C.The intervals between injury and surgery averaged 7.5 days (range,from 1 to 16 days).The fracture was located at the upper shaft in 26 cases,at the middle shaft in 57 cases,at the middle shaft and ipsilateral neck in one,and at the lower shaft and ipsilateral intertrochanteric site in one.Their operation time,intraoperative blood loss,intra-and post-operative complications,and fracture union time were recorded and analyzed.Results Successful close reduction was achieved in all the 85 patients with no iatrogenic injury to major vessels or nerves.Operation time averaged 105.5 minutes;time for X-ray exposure averaged 25.8 seconds;intraoperative blood loss averaged 209.2 mL.The 85 patients received follow-ups from 8 to 24 months (mean,16.3 months).Fracture union was achieved in 83 cases after an average duration of 7.8 weeks (range,from 4 to 12 weeks),but nonunion occurred in 2 cases.One-year follow-ups revealed recovery of normal function of the affected knee in all,with no limb shortening ＞ 10 mm,rotational angulation ＞ 15°,or lateral or anteroposterior angulation ＞ 10°.No incision infection,deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism happened during the entire follow-up.Conclusion Our self-designed novel distractor can facilitate CRIF with antegrade intramedullary nail for femoral shaft fractures,and avoid the complications and inconvenience associated with a traction table.

Objective: To analyze the effect of breakfast nutrition quality on the satiety among young white-collar workers. Methods: A total of 278 subjects were recruited from two cities, Shenyang and Chongqing, in June 2015. The inclusion criteria: white-collar workers aged 25-45 years involved mainly in office work, who did not experience major changes, and individuals who should follow the study protocol and sign the informed consent form. The study employed a three-phase crossover design trial. Each participant received nutritional-adequate breakfast, nutritional-inadequate breakfast, and no breakfast treatment on the basis of assignment to one of three sequences. The breakfast time was once a week and then changed, all participants underwent the tests for three successive weeks. At last, we compared the effect of participants to consume different nutritional quality on satiety sense and hunger sense. Results: A total of 232 participants completed three successive breakfast intervention studies, the age of participants was (35.2 ± 7.9) years, comprised of 48.7% male (n=113). The numbers of participants of aged 25-35 year-old and aged 36-45 were 118 and 114, respectively. Satiety scores of nutrition-adequate breakfast group, nutrition-inadequate breakfast group and no breakfast group were 63.5±14.7, 53.1±10.2 and 36.4±7.2, respectively (P<0.05). In nutrition-inadequate breakfast group and no breakfast group, male subjects scored significantly higher than female subjects (50.9±10.5 vs 46.6±9.4, 35.2±8.3 vs 31.8±5.4) (P<0.05). And, participants aged 25-35 year-old. got satiety score significantly higher than aged 36-45 (51.3±11.0 vs 45.6±12.1, 34.1±6.8 vs 32.5±7.9), the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The scores of hunger in the group of nutrition-adequate breakfast, nutrition-inadequate breakfast and no breakfast were 26.3 ± 8.0, 35.1 ± 11.2 and 57.3 ± 17.0, respectively (P<0.05). Conclusion The nutrition quality of breakfast affects the satiety of young white-collar workers. The better the nutrition quality of breakfast is, the higher the satiety score and the lower the hunger score become. Compared with women and participants aged 36-45 year-old, men and those aged 25-35 year-old get satiety sense more easily.
