Objective To study the antioxidative effect of the ethanol extract (e-EXT) and aqueous extract (a-EXT) of Codonopsis lanceolata from Mount Taishan in mice. Method The mice were divided into six groups at random. After the mice were orally treated with 5% Tween-80 (solvent,20 mL/kg),Vitamin C (0.1 g/kg),e-EXT (10,20 g/kg) and a-EXT (10,20 g/kg) once daily for 14 days respectively, the blood, liver and brain were collected for determining SOD,GSH-Px,GSH and MDA levels. Results The SOD,GSH-Px and GSH levels were enhanced significantly, and the MDA levels were reduced markedly in serum, liver and brain homogenate of the mice treated with 20 g/kg e-EXT and a-EXT. In the serum and liver homogenate of 10 g/kg a-EXT group, the levels of SOD,GSH-Px and GSH were increased, the contents of MDA were decreased. Conclusion The ethanol extract and aqueous extract of Codonopsis lanceolata from Mount Taishan could enhance the antioxidative ability of the mice, especially the large-dose aqueous extract.

ObjectiveTo evaluate intraoperative cholangiograhy during cholecystectomy for patients with preoperative benign gallbladder disease. Methods Unexpected biliary disease and anomaly found by intraoperative cholangiography in 904 cases of preoperatively diagnosed simple gallbladder stone and polypoid lesions were analyzed. Results Choledocholithiasis was found in 79 cases, anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction (APBJ)in 21, gallbladder cystic duct variations in 28, right accessory hepatic duct in 4 . Conclusions Intraoperative cholangiograhy during the process of simple cholecystectomy helps to discover preoperatively mis-diagnosed choledocholithiasis, hence to avoid secondary exploration of common bile duct which is otherwise inevitable, it may also demonstrate the anomalous pancreaticobiliary junction and bile ductal anatomic variations.

Objective To establish a new model of acute hepatic failure in canines for bioartificial liver treatment research . Methods Acute hepatic failure was induced by end to side portocaval shunt combined with common bile duct ligation and transection. The survival rate, liver function, ammonia, Fischer's ratio (BCAA/AAA) and pathological change of injury liver were investigated. Results The ammonia, ALT, AKP, total bilirubin and PT were elevated dramatically and Fischer's ratio declined significantly 14 days after the operation. The survival rate of the models decreased with time 14 days after the operation. Pathological examination of liver tissues revealed evidence of cholestasis, inflammation with accumulation of neutrophils, degeneration and necrosis of hepatocytes. Conclusions End to side portocaval shunt combined with common bile duct ligation and transection can produce a satisfactory acute hepatic failure model in canines, which could be used in the study of bioartificial liver.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of upper cervical spine disorders through a posterior pedicle fixation approach have been carried out in some domestic large hospitals, but this surgery is still considered as a difficulty of cervical spine surgery. In order to minimize the risk of surgery, the authors designed a program of individual operations, and combined with self-developed pedicle locating and directing speculum to determine precise intraoperative position of pedicle screws, and no report is found by searching related database in China.OBJECTIVE: To improve the one-time success rate of internal fixation screws, to investigate the biomechanical effect of the implant, to formulate a simple, practical, individual protocol for atiantoaxial pedicle screw-plate system based on related data. METHODS: A total of 31 patients were recruited from Department of Orthopaedics in the 251 Hospital of Chinese PLA, between January 2002 and September 2006. Under the guidance of self-made atlantoaxial locating and directing speculum, the entrance point and angle for screw insertion, as well as screw diameter and length were determined according to the results of X-ray and CT measurement. Atlas pedicle screw was inserted at left (19.93±1.32) mm, and right (19.16±1.3) mm; Atlas pedicle screw insertion angle to inside was left (23.72±2.09)°, and right (23.35±1.91)°; Atlas pedicle screw insertion angle to side of head was (9.00±1.20)°. Axis pedicle screw was inserted at left (13.14±0.82) mm, and right (13.85±0.79) mm; Axis pedicle screw insertion angle to inside was left (24.52±1.26)°, and right (20.42±1.42)°; Axis pedicle screw insertion angle to side of head was (25.00±3.00)°.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: ①Totally 124 pedicle screws were implanted into 31 patients, and 122 screws were of one-time success. The precision rate was 98.39%. Two screws were secondly inserted because of cutting lateral cortical bone of pedicle for deviation of inward angle. ②Occipital neuralgia was found in 2 cases postoperatively and cured after one month of treatment;screws penetrated atlas left vertebral lateral wall in 2 cases, no spinal or vertebral artery injury was found. ③Radiographs showed that atlas was completely reduced in all patients, and apposition of dentoid process of axis fracture was good. CT films showed the screws a good location to the vertebrarterial spinal cord. ④The follow-up visit was averaged of 10.5 months. Bony fusion was found in all patients. No screw-plate breakage was found. No inflammatory or rejection reactions occurred.⑤By JOA scale, there were 16 cases of excellent, 12 cases of good, 2 cases of fine, and 1 case of poor. The excellent and good rate was 90%. It is suggested that the success rate of atlantoaxial pedicle screw-plate mplantation can be improved through a biomechanical angle.

Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the related factor of postoperative provisional paraly?sis of parasagittal meningioma in the eloquent area. Methods A retrospective review was conducted on ninety-six pa?tients with parasagittal meningioma in the eloquent area treated by surgery from May 2005 to December 2015. Accord?ing to the diagnostic criteria for postoperative provisional paralysis, patients were divided into postoperative provisional paralysis group(n=31)and non- postoperative provisional paralysis group(n=65). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression methods were used to analyze the data including age, size of tumor, preoperative epilepsy, preoperative periph?eral edema, complete the occlusion of superior sagittal sinus(SSS) by tumor, incision of SSS during surgery, drainage vein damage during surgery. Results Univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences(P<0.05)between these two groups in age(χ2=14.943,P=0.000), preoperative peripheral edema(χ2=4.435,P=0.049), the complete occlu?sion of SSS by tumor(χ2=5.248,P=0.028), incision of SSS during surgery(χ2=5.773,P=0.026), drainage vein damage during surgery(χ2=11.441,P=0.002). Multivariate analysis showed that the factors related to postoperative provisional paralysis were age(OR=8.709,P=0.028), drainage vein damage during surgery(OR=16.242,P=0.012)and complete oc?clusion of SSS by tumor(OR=0.053,P=0.025). Conclusion Age and the drainage vein damage during surgery are the risk factors of postoperative provisional paralysis and complete occlusion of SSS by tumor is the protective factor for the oc? currence of postoperative provisional paralysis.
