Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. It is very important to explore the biomarkers for the early prediction of preeclampsia. Some peptides released from placenta, such as soluble Flt-1 and placenta growth factor (PlGF), have been revealed for definite prospects of application. Meanwhile, the recent advances in proteomics, metabolomics and microRNA shed light on searching of new biomarkers for preeclampsia prediction.

Mechanical ventilation (MV) with large tidal volumes can increase lung alveolar permeability and initiate inflammatory responses, resulting in ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).The mechanisms of the injurious effects of MV and the genetic susceptibility remain unclear.VILI-related genes such as cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (Cyr61)have been demonstrated to play a detrimental role in the aggressive ventilation strategies. In the present study,we investigated the involvement of Cyr61 in the VIM and the underlying mechanism.A549 cells were exposed to cyclic stretch of varying durations and then the mRNA and protein levels of Cyr61 were measured by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively.Additionally, after exposure ofA549 cells to cyclic stretch for 5 min to 1 h,the expression levels of nuclear factor kappaB (NF-κB) and IL-8 were detected by ELISA and Western blotting.Thereafter,Cyr61 expression was depressed in A549 cells with the siRNA pGenesill.1-Cyr61-3 before the cyclic stretch, and IL-8 secretion and the activation of NF-κB pathways were probed by ELISA and Western blotting, respectively. Moreover,a NF-κB inhibitor (PDTC) and an activator (TNF) were used before mechanical stretch.Realtime PCR and ELISA were performed to detect the mRNA and protein of IL-8,respectively.The results showed that the mechanical cyclic stretch led to increased Cyr61 expression at mRNA and protein levels in A549 cells.Additionally, cyclic stretch also mobilized NF-κB from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and increased IL-8 secretion in A549 cells. The inhibition of Cyr61 blocked the NF-κB activation and IL-8 secretion in response to cyclic stretch.Inhibition of NF-κB attenuated the mRNA and protein expression of IL-8 in A549 cells transfected with Cyr61 siRNA.It was suggested that Cyr61/NF-κB signaling pathway mediates the upregulation of IL-8 in response to cyclic stretch in A594 cells. These findings support the hypothesis that Cyr61 plays a critical role in acute lung inflammation triggered by mechanical strain.

OBJECTIVETo discuss the intervention effect of ligustrazine on ox-LDL-induced foam cells from the perspective of reverse cholesterol transport.
METHODRAW264.7 cultured in vitro was induced with 20 mg x L(-1) ox-LDL to establish the foam cell model, and intervened with ligustrazine. The lipid accumulation in cells was observed by the oil red O dyeing. The changes in total cholesterol and cholesterol ester in the cells were detected with the colorimetric method. The fluorescent quantitative PCR and Western blot were used to detect the mRNA expressions of PPARgamma, LXRalpha and ABCA1.
RESULTLigustrazine could reduce total cholesterol and cholesterol ester in foam cells, inhibit the lipid accumulation, and increase the mRNA and protein expressions of PPARgamma, LXRalpha and ABCA1.
CONCLUSIONLigustrazine can promote the reverse cholesterol transport by increasing the gene expressions of PPARgamma, LXRalpha and ABCA1.

Although quality assessment is gaining increasing attention, there is still no consensus on how to define and grade postoperative complications. The absence of a defimition and a widely accepted ranking system to classify surgical complications has hampered proper interpretation of the surgical outcome. This study aimed to define and search the simple and reproducible classification of complications following hepatectomy based on two therapy-oriented severity grading system:Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications and Accordion severity grading of postoperative complications. Two classifications were tested in a cohort of 2008 patients who underwent elective liver surgery at our institution between January 1986 and December 2005.Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to link respective complications with perioperative parameters, length of hospital stay and the quality of life.A total of 1716 (85.46%) patients did not develop any complication, while 292 (14.54%)patients had at least one complication.According to Clavien-Dindo classification of surgical complications system, grade Ⅰ complications occurred in 150 patients (7.47%),grade Ⅱ in 47 patients (2.34%),grade Ⅲa in 59 patients (2.94%),grade Ⅲb in 13 patients (0.65%),grade Ⅳa in 7 patients (0.35%),grade Ⅳb in 1 patient (0.05%),and grade Ⅴ in 15 patients (0.75%).According to Accordion severity grading of postoperative complications system, mild complications occurred in 160 patients (7.97%),moderate complications in 48 patients (2.39%),severe complications (invasive procedure/no general anesthesia) in 48 patients (2.39%),severe complications (invasive procedure under general anesthesia or single organ system failure) in 20 patients (1.00%),severe complications (organ system failure and invasive procedure under general anesthesia or multisystem organ failure) in 1 patient (0.05%),and mortality was 0.75% (n=15).Complication severity of Clavien-Dindo system and Accordion system were all correlated with the length of hospital stay, the number of hepatic segments resected, the blood transfusion and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety (HADS-A).The Clavien-Dindo classification system and Accordion classification system are the simple ways of reporting all complications following the liver surgery.

Objective To examine the composition and distribution of animal reservoir of plague in Quanzhou city, Fujian province, and so as to accumulate basic data for making the plague prevention and control measures. Methods Rodents were captured by cages in six monitoring spots of Quanzhou city between 2000 and 2009. Then rodents and flea species were identified. Rats liver and spleen homogenates were detected of plague F1 antigen by reverse indirect hemagglutination test (RIHA); rats serum were detected of plague F1 antibody by indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). ResultsA total of 26 264 rodents were captured between 2000 and 2009.Rattus norvegicus and Rattus flavipectus were dominant species, which were accounted for 45.97% (12 074/26 264)and 32.01%(8407/26 264), respectively. The account of Rattus flavipectus captured between 2005 and 2009 was (26.99 ± 2.46)% and (37.03 ± 3.79)% between 2000 and 2004. The difference was statistically significant (t =4.97, P < 0.05). Total rodent densities was (6.86 ± 1.44)%, including(5.36 ± 1.83)% in mountains and (6.81 ±1.66)% in coastal areas, respectively, and the difference was not statistically significant(t =1.01, P > 0.05). Total flea index and flea infection rate of rodents were 1.39 ± 0.34 and (35.90 ± 5.34)%, respectively. Xenopsylla Cheopis index was 1.20 and free flea index was 0.009. Flea infection rate was (32.36 ± 0.96)% between 2005 and 2009, which was lower than (39.44 ± 0.39)% between 2000 and 2004(t =2.76, P < 0.05). ConclusionsThe major rodent species found in Quanzhou city is Rattus norvegicus. Xenopsylla Cheopis is the dominant flea species.Spreading of plague among Rattus is not found.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2011;31(2):350-352
OBJECTIVETo assess the seroprevalence and diagnostic value of aquaporin-4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) in patients with inflammatory central nervous system demyelinating diseases.
METHODSSeventy-two patients with neuromyelitis optica (NMO), 68 with multiple sclerosis (MS), 4 with optic neuritis (ON), and 41 with transverse myelitis (TM) were included in this study. The TM group comprised 19 patients with non-longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (nLETM), 14 with monophasic longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (mLETM), and 8 with recurrent longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (rLETM). The serum levels of AQP4-Ab was detected by indirect immunofluorence assay in these patients.
RESULTSAQP4-Ab was detected in 72.2% (52/72) patients with NMO, 5.9% (4/68) patients with MS, 25.0% (1/4) patients with ON, and 17.1% (7/41) patients with TM, showing a significant difference in the positivity between NMO and MS groups (P<0.01). AQP4-Ab seropositivity rate was 5.3% (1/19) in nLETM patients, 62.5% (5/8) in rLETM patients and 7.1% (1/14) in mLETM patients, significantly higher in rLETM than in nLETM (P<0.01) and mLETM groups (P<0.05), but no statistical difference was found between rLETM and NMO groups.
CONCLUSIONSA high seroprevalence of AQP4-Ab is observed in patients with NMO and rLETM, which support the hypothesis that NMO and rLETM belong to NMO spectrum disorders. AQP4-Ab can serve as a useful index for diagnosing NMO and differential diagnosis from MS. More attention and effective immunosuppressive treatments should be given to patients positive for AQP4-Ab.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2010;30(12):2733-2737
OBJECTIVETo analyze the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of neuromyelitis optica (NMO) in Chinese patients.
METHODSWe retrospectively reviewed the MRI films of 61 patients with NMO (including 57 female and 4 male patients) admitted in our department.
RESULTSOf these patients, 39 (79.6%) showed positivity for serum aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibody. On MRI, 18 patients showed involvement of the cervical cord alone, 27 had both cervical and thoracic segment involvement, and 16 displayed thoracic segment involvement. The lesions appeared linear (9 cases), diffuse (23 cases), or both (29 cases), mostly located axially with occasional lateral distribution. Thirty-nine of the 61 patients (63.9%) had brain abnormalities, 31 presented with supratentorial lesions (mostly in the juxtacortical, subcortical, deep white matter and lateral ventricle-adjacent regions, n=27), 15 showed infratentorial lesions (mostly in the preiaqueduct-fourth ventricular-central canal, n=13), and 7 had supra- and infratentorial lesions simultaneously.
CONCLUSIONNMO has complex MRI presentation, and linear lesions in the spinal cord and preiaqueduct-fourth ventricular-central canal lesions, where AQP4 is high expressed, can be characteristic for NMO. MRI and AQP4 antibody detection are suggested for suspected cases for early diagnosis.
