OBJECTIVE: To analyze the features of drowning victims with psychiatric disorders to support further investigation on such cases. METHODS: One hundred and five archives of drowning victims with psychiatric disorders from January 2010 to June 2014 in Harbor Public Security Subbureau, Shanghai Public Security Bureau were reviewed. The decedents' general information, autopsy findings, case investigation data and disease histories were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Of the 105 cases, 104 were suicides. Most decedents were poorly educated. Most suicides occurred in warm climate, and the corpses were usually found within 2 days. Most decedents had no suicide history and notes, but had abnormal mental or behavior changes before suicide. Depression, depression status and schizophrenia were the main types of psychiatric disorders, and only 9 decedents had received regular therapies before their deaths. CONCLUSION Mental disorder is a high risk factor in the drowning victims. Guardians should be aware of psychotic abnormal behaviors, especially during warm climate seasons.

"To recognize similarities and differences simultaneously" is of important clinical significance in understanding the laws of diseases. CM pays much attention to recognize similarities, while modern medicine emphasizes the differences observed. In order to develop integrative medicine (IM), similarities recognition and differences identification must be combined together to innovate new thinking methods of IM.

Objective To observe apelin and its receptor (APJ) expressions in human osteoblasts and evaluate the effect of apelin on osteoblasts.Methods The expressions of apelin and APJ in human osteoblasts were tested by RT-PCR and Western blot.After human osteoblasts were treated with apelin,cell proliferation was measured by [~3H] thymidine incorporation and cell counting.Cell function was measured by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity,the secreted osteocalcin level and typeⅠcollagen production .The activation of signaling cascades was tested by Western blot.Small-interfering RNA (siRNA) to blockade APJ was applied to observe effects of apelin on cell proliferation and the activation of signaling cascades.Results Both apelin and APJ were expressed in human osteoblasts.Apelin increased the proliferation and did not show the influences on ALP activity, osteocalcin secretion and type I collagen production in human osteoblasts.Apelin induced activation of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) downstream effector (Akt),but not mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) such as c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK),p38 and ERK1/2 in human osteoblasts.Suppression of APJ with siRNA or LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor) abolished the apelin-induced cell proliferation and the activation of Akt.Conclusion Human osteoblasts express apelin and APJ.Apelin stimulates the proliferation of human osteoblast via APJ/PI3K/Akt pathway,but has no effect on osteoblast differentiation.

Objective To statistically analyze the overdose of Chinese materia medica in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic of The Affiliated Orthopedics and Traumatology Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as "our hospital"); To provide references for rational application of Chinese materia medica in orthopedics and traumatology department. Methods Totaiiy 1200 prescriptions during Sep. 2015 - Sep. 2016 in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic were randomly selected. Based on the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015 Edition) and the second edition of the New Century textbook Chinese Medicine as references, the top 30 of the use of TCM decoction pieces were retrospectively analyzed. Results The top 30 of the use of TCM decoction pieces were 100% overdosed, among which 11 TCM decoction pieces were 50% overdosed; 95.93% prescriptions were with 18 kinds of Chinese materia medica. Conclusion Excessive use of Chinese materia medica prescriptions are common in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic of out hospital, which causes waste of TCM resources and imposes patients' financial burden.

OBJECTIVESTo evaluate the relationship between the operative methods and the therapeutic results of the patients with hypospadias.

METHODSNine operative types and different tissue materials taken in hypospadias operations in the past 12 years were retrospectively analyzed.

RESULTSThe operative types and tissue materials had significantly effects on the therapeutic results besides the clinical experience of the operators. The cure rates of Tunneltron Urethroplasty, Preputial island flap urethroplasty and Bladder mucosa graft urethroplasty were 86.4%, 83.3% and 83.0% respectively.

CONCLUSIONSAll the nine types and different tissue materials of Hypospadias operations have its own advantages and disadvantages. They are worth further study and improvement.

BACKGROUNDObjective evaluation of allergic rhinitis (AR) requires in vivo and in vitro tests. In vitro tests are important to assist or ensure the main allergens in multi-allergen-sensitive patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of serum specific IgE (sIgE) in the diagnosis of AR patients with multi-allergens in the Chinese population.

METHODSCombining a positive skin prick test (SPT) and clinical history as the diagnostic reference criteria of AR, we estimated concentrations of sIgE produced in response to the 7 most frequent allergens among 85 AR patients, using the UniCAP assay system.

RESULTSAmong 85 individuals with positive SPT results and allergen-specific nasal symptoms, sIgE concentration correlated well with SPT classes among all the tested allergens. Based on a clinical diagnosis and SPT results using a positive cut-off value of a class 1 score, the CAP test performed well and the sensitivity for different allergens ranged from 0.5 (giant ragweed) to 0.91 (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) and Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f), while specificity ranged from 0.93 (Der f) to 1.0 (animal hair, Der p and mugwort). When the cut-off score was adjusted to class 2, the sensitivity showed an increase overall while the remaining assessed items, including specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and efficiency, showed an unacceptable decline.

CONCLUSIONSWell-established serum sIgE tests correlated well with SPTs. Setting a class 1 cut-off for positivity of SPT results was better than a class 2 setting for assessing the AR diagnostic value.
