Journal of Forensic Medicine 2014;30(6):456-459
OBJECTIVE:
To analyze the features of drowning victims with psychiatric disorders to support further investigation on such cases.
METHODS:
One hundred and five archives of drowning victims with psychiatric disorders from January 2010 to June 2014 in Harbor Public Security Subbureau, Shanghai Public Security Bureau were reviewed. The decedents' general information, autopsy findings, case investigation data and disease histories were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS:
Of the 105 cases, 104 were suicides. Most decedents were poorly educated. Most suicides occurred in warm climate, and the corpses were usually found within 2 days. Most decedents had no suicide history and notes, but had abnormal mental or behavior changes before suicide. Depression, depression status and schizophrenia were the main types of psychiatric disorders, and only 9 decedents had received regular therapies before their deaths.
CONCLUSION
Mental disorder is a high risk factor in the drowning victims. Guardians should be aware of psychotic abnormal behaviors, especially during warm climate seasons.

"Wise men could recognize similarities, but the fool only recognizes differences" in Su-wen, which expounded clinical thinking methods of Chinese medicine (CM). "To recognize similarities and differences simultaneously" is of important clinical significance in understanding the laws of diseases. CM pays much attention to recognize similarities, while modern medicine emphasizes the differences observed. In order to develop integrative medicine (IM), similarities recognition and differences identification must be combined together to innovate new thinking methods of IM.

Objective To observe apelin and its receptor (APJ) expressions in human osteoblasts and evaluate the effect of apelin on osteoblasts. Methods The expressions of apelin and APJ in human osteoblasts were tested by RT-PCR and Western blot. After human osteoblasts were treated with apelin, cell proliferation was measured by [~3H] thymidine incorporation and cell counting.Cell function was measured by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, the secreted osteocalcin level and typeⅠcollagen production .The activation of signaling cascades was tested by Western blot.Small-interfering RNA (siRNA) to blockade APJ was applied to observe effects of apelin on cell proliferation and the activation of signaling cascades. Results Both apelin and APJ were expressed in human osteoblasts.Apelin increased the proliferation and did not show the influences on ALP activity, osteocalcin secretion and type I collagen production in human osteoblasts.Apelin induced activation of phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI3K) downstream effector (Akt),but not mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) such as c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK),p38 and ERK1/2 in human osteoblasts.Suppression of APJ with siRNA or LY294002 (PI3K inhibitor) abolished the apelin-induced cell proliferation and the activation of Akt.Conclusion Human osteoblasts express apelin and APJ.Apelin stimulates the proliferation of human osteoblast via APJ/PI3K/Akt pathway, but has no effect on osteoblast differentiation.

Objective To statistically analyze the overdose of Chinese materia medica in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic of The Affiliated Orthopedics and Traumatology Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (hereinafter referred to as "our hospital"); To provide references for rational application of Chinese materia medica in orthopedics and traumatology department. Methods Totaiiy 1200 prescriptions during Sep. 2015 - Sep. 2016 in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic were randomly selected. Based on the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2015 Edition) and the second edition of the New Century textbook Chinese Medicine as references, the top 30 of the use of TCM decoction pieces were retrospectively analyzed. Results The top 30 of the use of TCM decoction pieces were 100% overdosed, among which 11 TCM decoction pieces were 50% overdosed; 95.93% prescriptions were with 18 kinds of Chinese materia medica. Conclusion Excessive use of Chinese materia medica prescriptions are common in Orthopedics and Traumatology Outpatient Clinic of out hospital, which causes waste of TCM resources and imposes patients' financial burden.

OBJECTIVESTo evaluate the relationship between the operative methods and the therapeutic results of the patients with hypospadias.
METHODSNine operative types and different tissue materials taken in hypospadias operations in the past 12 years were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTSThe operative types and tissue materials had significantly effects on the therapeutic results besides the clinical experience of the operators. The cure rates of Tunneltron Urethroplasty, Preputial island flap urethroplasty and Bladder mucosa graft urethroplasty were 86.4%, 83.3% and 83.0% respectively.
CONCLUSIONSAll the nine types and different tissue materials of Hypospadias operations have its own advantages and disadvantages. They are worth further study and improvement.

Objective To explore the effects of radiofrequency catheter ablation(RFCA)on the blood coaguable states and the clinical value of perioperative plasma D-dimer.Methods The plasma level of D-dimer was assayed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)in blood samples of 30 children who were undertaken RFCA.Blood samples were consecutively obtained before cannulating, after electrophysiologic(EP)study, immediately after RFCA,the second day and the seventh day after RFCA.The centrifuged spead was 3 000 r/min,keep it for 10 minutes to obtain the upper plasma, and the crvopreserve. Results The plasma levels of D-dimer was highest at the time point when RFCA was successfully accomplished and restored to preoperative level in the seventh day after RFCA.There were statistically significant difference in the paried values at different time points(Pa

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy of combined transplantation of neurotrophin-3 and neural stem cells in treatment of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury in rats, and study the possible mechanism.
METHODSNeural stem cells (NSCs) isolated from hippocampi of newborn wistar rats were cultured and identified. The hypoxic-ischemic brain injury models established with 7-day-old wistar rats, and neural stem cells or others were transplantated into the ipsilateral ventricles 7 days later. The 7-day-old rats were randomized into 5 groups: normal group, model group, sham-transplantation group, NSCs transplantation group, and NT-3 combined with NSCs transplantation group. There were 12 rats per group. The functional test and immunohistochemistry were examined 4 weeks later.
RESULTSThe neural stem cells from new-born rats' hippocampi were successfully cultured. It was found that they formed typical neurospheres in suspension, and the majorities of cells expressed nestin, which was the marker for neural stem cells. The rats from combined transplantation group performed significantly better in the ability to study and in memory and the limb function than the rats from NSCs transplantation group (P < 0.05). The rate of neural stem cells differentiating into neurons from combined transplantation group was higher, too (50% vs. 30%).
CONCLUSIONCombined NT-3 and NSCs transplantation could improve the ability to study, memory and the limb function of rats after hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, and improve the rate of NSCs differentiating neurons. Combined NT-3 and NSCs transplantation had better effects on hypoxic-ischemic rats than transplantation of NSCs alone.
