Iris image quality evaluation plays a very important part in iris computer recognition. An iris image quality evaluation method was introduced into this study to distinguish good image from bad image caused by pupil distortion, blurred boundary, two circles appearing not concentric, and severe occlusion by eyelids and eyelashes. The tests based on this method gave good results.

23 subjects' 8-lead (Fp1, Fp2, Cp3, Cp4, T7, T8, P7, P8) electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded when they were doing mental arithmetic at four different levels. We calculated the information transmission time series in human cerebral cortex basing on EEG, and the Lempel-Ziv complexity and C1C2 complexity of these time series. When 20 subjects were doing the most difficult mental arithmetic, the information transmission series between lead at left-brain (Cp3, T7, P7) and other leads was of more complexity than others; a light "cross" could be seen after the information transmission matrix was converted to image; when complexity was calculated, the difference was more significant by use of C1 complexity than by other complexity measures.

Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2006;23(4):882-886
In present, the most basically used parameters for speaker identification are linear predictive coding (LPC) parameter, Mel frequency cepstrum coefficient(MFCC), etc. First in this paper only MFCC was used as the parameter and then Lempel-Ziv Complexity was combined with MFCC as parameters. The text-dependent recognition rate of 50 speakers increased from 42% to 80% and the text-independent recognition rate of 50 speakers increased from 60% to 72%. This test shows that Lempel-Ziv complexity, as a new parameter, can be applied to speaker identification.

OBJECTIVETo summarise and analyse the experience and methods of managing the perioperative respiratory problems in patients with tumor of trachea or carina surgically treated during the last decade, and the ways of preventing severe postoperative respiratory complications in the future.
METHODSThirty-eight patients with tumor of trachea or carina surgically treated from 1991 to 2000 by different modes of tracheobronchial plastic surgery were retrospectively studied to summarise and analyse the changes in preoperative pulmonary function, postoperative complications and the management of perioperative respiratory problems.
RESULTSOut of 38 patients, 29 (76.3%) gave abnormal results to preoperative pulmonary function tests. 55.3% (21/38) of the whole series developed 45 postoperative complications with respiratory complications as the major one (80.0%). Seventeen patients who had undergone carinal pneumonectomy or carinal resection plus reconstruction gave far more complications (28 complications) than the remaining 21 patients treated by other modes of surgery (17 complications). Four patients died of postoperative complications with a mortality rate of 10.5%.
CONCLUSIONPatients treated with carinal pneumonectomy or carinal resection plus reconstruction give much more complications than patients treated by any other modes of large airway surgery. Fiberoptic bronchoscopic (FOB) guided intubation, precise surgical treatment, postoperative mechanical ventilation support, use of effective antibiotics and sufficient nutritional support are important for a successful management of these patients.

Femoral neck fracture (FNF) in the elderly patients is currently a major health challenge worldwide, with excessive consumption of medical resources, high incidence of complications as well as suboptimal outcome and prognosis. Hip joint arthroplasty (HJA) has been the mainstream treatment for FNF in the elderly, but the conventional surgical approaches and techniques are still confronted with a series of bottlenecks such as dislocation, limp and limb length discrepancy. In recent years, direct anterior approach (DAA) for HJA (DAA-HJA) has been a major new choice in the field of joint replacement, which achieves improved clinical effectiveness of HJA in the treatment of elderly FNF, due to the fact that DAA approach involves the neuromuscular interface and accords with the idea of soft tissue retention and enhanced recovery after surgery. However, there is still a lack of unified understanding of standard technique and procedure of DAA-HJA in the treatment of elderly FNF. Therefore, relevant experts from the Hip Joint Group of Chinese Orthopedics Association of Chinese Medical Association, Youth Arthrology Group of Orthopedic Committee of PLA, Orthopedic Committee of Chongqing Medical Association, Branch of Orthopedic Surgeons of Chongqing Medical Doctor Association and Sport Medicine Committee of Chongqing Medical Association were organized to formulate the " Chinese expert consensus on the technical standard of direct anterior hip arthroplasty for elderly femoral neck fracture ( version 2023)" based on evidence-based medicine. This consensus mainly proposed 13 recommendations covering indications, surgical plans, prosthesis selections, surgical techniques and processes, and postoperative management of DAA-HJA in elderly patients with FNF, aiming to promote standardized, systematic and patient-specific diagnosis and treatment to improve the functional prognosis of the patients.

Development of thoracolumbar vertebra (TLV) and rib primordium (RP) is a common evolutionary feature across vertebrates, although whole-organism analysis of the expression dynamics of TLV- and RP-related genes has been lacking. Here, we investigated the single-cell transcriptome landscape of thoracic vertebra (TV), lumbar vertebra (LV), and RP cells from a pig embryo at 27 days post-fertilization (dpf) and identified six cell types with distinct gene expression signatures. In-depth dissection of the gene expression dynamics and RNA velocity revealed a coupled process of osteogenesis and angiogenesis during TLV and RP development. Further analysis of cell type-specific and strand-specific expression uncovered the extremely high level of HOXA10 3'-UTR sequence specific to osteoblasts of LV cells, which may function as anti-HOXA10-antisense by counteracting the HOXA10-antisense effect to determine TLV transition. Thus, this work provides a valuable resource for understanding embryonic osteogenesis and angiogenesis underlying vertebrate TLV and RP development at the cell type-specific resolution, which serves as a comprehensive view on the transcriptional profile of animal embryo development.
