Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2013;30(5):946-951
In order to support the theory and practice of the web-based cancer database development in China, we applied a systematic evaluation to assess the development condition of the web-based cancer databases at home and abroad. We performed computer-based retrieval of the Ovid-MEDLINE, Springerlink, EBSCOhost, Wiley Online Library and CNKI databases, the papers of which were published between Jan. 1995 and Dec. 2011, and retrieved the references of these papers by hand. We selected qualified papers according to the pre-established inclusion and exclusion criteria, and carried out information extraction and analysis of the papers. Eventually, searching the online database, we obtained 1244 papers, and checking the reference lists, we found other 19 articles. Thirty-one articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and we extracted the proofs and assessed them. Analyzing these evidences showed that the U.S.A. counted for 26% in the first place. Thirty-nine percent of these web-based cancer databases are comprehensive cancer databases. As for single cancer databases, breast cancer and prostatic cancer are on the top, both counting for 10% respectively. Thirty-two percent of the cancer database are associated with cancer gene information. For the technical applications, MySQL and PHP applied most widely, nearly 23% each.

Specialist bibliographic databases offer essential online tools for researchers and authors who work on specific subjects and perform comprehensive and systematic syntheses of evidence. This article presents examples of the established specialist databases, which may be of interest to those engaged in multidisciplinary science communication. Access to most specialist databases is through subscription schemes and membership in professional associations. Several aggregators of information and database vendors, such as EBSCOhost and ProQuest, facilitate advanced searches supported by specialist keyword thesauri. Searches of items through specialist databases are complementary to those through multidisciplinary research platforms, such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Familiarizing with the functional characteristics of biomedical and nonbiomedical bibliographic search tools is mandatory for researchers, authors, editors, and publishers. The database users are offered updates of the indexed journal lists, abstracts, author profiles, and links to other metadata. Editors and publishers may find particularly useful source selection criteria and apply for coverage of their peer-reviewed journals and grey literature sources. These criteria are aimed at accepting relevant sources with established editorial policies and quality controls.

4.WinBioDBs: A Windows-based Integrated Program for Manipulating Major Biological Databases.

Genomics & Informatics 2009;7(3):175-177
We have developed WinBioDBs with Windows interfaces, which include importing modules and searching interfaces for 10 major public databases such as GenBank, PIR, SwissProt, Pathway, EPD, ENZYME, REBASE, Prosite, Blocks, and Pfam. User databases can be constructed with searching results of queries and their entries can be edited. The program is a stand-alone database searching program on Windows PC. Database update features are supported by importing raw database files and indexing after downloading them. Users can adjust their own searching environments and report format and construct their own projects consisting of a combination of a local databases. WinBioDBs are implemented with VC++ and its database is based on MySQL.

Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica 2015;50(11):1474-1479
A CDASH-based CRF annotation plays an important role in database setup and data verification. The STDM-based CRF annotation is also one of the essential documents when the package of clinical trial data is submitted to the regulatory authority. This paper describes the contents, procedures and related stipulations used in the CDISC-based CRF annotation.

7.Application of Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man to medical genetics.
National Journal of Andrology 2011;17(7):639-643
Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM, http://omim. org/) is a comprehensive, authoritative, practical and timely knowledgebase of human genes and genetic disorders. OMIM, as a genetic encyclopedia, provides an easy and straightforward access to information on human genetics to students, researchers and clinicians. This article presents an overview on the contents of OMIM and its application to medical genetics.

8.Citation Discovery Tools for Conducting Adaptive Meta-analyses to Update Systematic Reviews.
Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health 2016;49(2):129-133
OBJECTIVES: The systematic review (SR) is a research methodology that aims to synthesize related evidence. Updating previously conducted SRs is necessary when new evidence has been produced, but no consensus has yet emerged on the appropriate update methodology. The authors have developed a new SR update method called 'adaptive meta-analysis' (AMA) using the 'cited by', 'similar articles', and 'related articles' citation discovery tools in the PubMed and Scopus databases. This study evaluates the usefulness of these citation discovery tools for updating SRs. METHODS: Lists were constructed by applying the citation discovery tools in the two databases to the articles analyzed by a published SR. The degree of overlap between the lists and distribution of excluded results were evaluated. RESULTS: The articles ultimately selected for the SR update meta-analysis were found in the lists obtained from the 'cited by' and 'similar' tools in PubMed. Most of the selected articles appeared in both the 'cited by' lists in Scopus and PubMed. The Scopus 'related' tool did not identify the appropriate articles. CONCLUSIONS: The AMA, which involves using both citation discovery tools in PubMed, and optionally, the 'related' tool in Scopus, was found to be useful for updating an SR.

9.Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors at the Forefront of Improving the Quality and Indexing Chances of its Member Journals.
Chang Ok SUH ; Se Jeong OH ; Sung Tae HONG
Journal of Korean Medical Science 2013;28(5):648-650
The article overviews some achievements and problems of Korean medical journals published in the highly competitive journal environment. Activities of Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) are viewed as instrumental for improving the quality of Korean articles, indexing large number of local journals in prestigious bibliographic databases and launching new abstract and citation tracking databases or platforms (eg KoreaMed, KoreaMed Synapse, the Western Pacific Regional Index Medicus [WPRIM]). KAMJE encourages its member journals to upgrade science editing standards and to legitimately increase citation rates, primarily by publishing more great articles with global influence. Experience gained by KAMJE and problems faced by Korean editors may have global implications.

10.Data quality in clinical trials: the role of blind review.
Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica 2015;50(11):1498-1501
Blind review is one of the most important milestones in clinical trials, which connects data management process to statistical analysis. During blind review, data quality should be reviewed and assessed on both data management and statistical aspects. The primary work of data managers in blind review is to ensure the accuracy of data before it is handed over to biostatistics group. Database auditing, listing data reviewing and reconciliation should become a good clinical data management practice. Statisticians, on the other hand, will focus on quality findings related to protocol deviations or protocol violations. To investigate the protocol deviations and/or violations and relevant impacts on data outcomes, it is important to provide the essential basis of data quality through the blind review, and to assess the reliability of study outcomes.
