This study is to investigate the therapeutic effect and mechanism of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) on pig serum-induced liver fibrosis of rats. The liver fibrotic model of rats was induced by pig serum. After models were successfully established, rats in the treatment groups were administered with I3C through intraperitoneal injection or curcumin by intragastric administration, daily for 17 days. Hepatic hydroxyproline (Hyp) content was measured. The liver histology and immunohistochemistry with a-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) were assayed. Hepatic stellate cells line, HSC-T6 was incubated with different concentrations of I3C (25, 50, and 100 micromol x L(-1)) for 24 h. The effect of I3C on cell apoptosis was identified by FITC-Annexin V/PI double labeled assay. And the mRNA expressions of Bax and Bcl-2 were measured by real time RT-PCR. The results showed that hepatic content of Hyp decreased by I3C treatment, as compared with the fibrotic model control. Histopathological changes, such as steatosis, necrosis, deposition of collagenous fiber reduced remarkably and the expression of alpha-SMA was significantly down-regulated in the I3C-treated groups (P < 0.01). Apoptosis analysis showed that I3C significantly increased HSC-T6 apoptosis rate and the expressional ratio of Bax to Bcl-2. The results indicated that I3C could effectively cure pig serum-induced liver fibrosis in vivo by inducing HSC apoptosis and promoting ECM degradation.

A HPLC method was established to determine the contents of the five anthraquinones and rhaponticin in the different varieties of Rhei Radix et Rhizoma. The difference existed in different varieties. The results showed that rhein and rhaponticin were marker substances which could be used to distinguish palm leaf groups rhubarb and wave leaf groups rhubarb. Authentic rhubarb didn't contain rhaponticin. Falsify rhubarb contains trace amounts of rhein. Rheum tanguticum contains abundant rhein. The ratio value of the content of rhein to chrysophanol could be used to distinguish R. tanguticum from the other two authentic varieties (R. palmatum and R. officinale). The content of rhaponticin varied largely in different varieties of wave leaf groups rhubarb.

Penaeidin-2 (Pen-2) is an important antimicrobial peptide derived from the Pacific white shrimp, Penaeus vannamei, and possesses both antibacterial and antifungal activities. Recent studies suggest that recombinant penaeidins show similar activities to the native Pen-2 protein. Previous researches have shown that some antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) exhibit cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. To date, there have been no studies on the antitumor effects of Pen-2. This study evaluated the potential of recombinant pen-2 (rPen-2) in the selective killing of kidney cancer cell lines ACHN and A498, and its action mechanism. MTT assays found the maximal growth inhibition of HK-2, ACHN and A498 cells treated with 100 μg/mL rPen-2 at 48 h was 13.2%, 62.4%, and 70.4%, respectively. DNA-specific fluorescent dye staining showed a high percentage of apoptosis on cancer cells. Flow cytometry revealed that the apoptosis rate of HK-2, ACHN and A498 cells was 15.2%, 55.2%, and 61.5% at 48 h respectively, suggesting that rPen-2 induced higher apoptosis rate in cancer cells than in HK-2 cells. Laser confocal scanning microscopy demonstrated that the plasma membrane was the key site where rPen-2 interacted with and destroyed tumor cells. Scanning electron microscopy showed the morphologic changes of the cell membranes of kidney cancer cells treated with rPen-2. These results suggest that rPen-2 is a novel potential therapeutic agent that may be useful in treating kidney cancers.

Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2004;24(8):698-700
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the clinical effect of Tianhuang Huoxue Tongluo Decoction (THTD) in treating acute hemorrhagic stroke.
METHODSSeventy-two patients were randomly divided into the treated group (n = 32) and the control group (n = 40), they were treated with conventional Western medicine treatment and to the patients in the treated group, THTD was given additionally starting from the 6th day of disease for 30 days.
RESULTSComparison of the neurofunction deficit scoring on the 15th day and the 30th day after treatment was significantly different in both group (P < 0.05). The markedly improving rate in the treated group was 71.88%, which was better than that in the control group (55.00%, P < 0.05), and no relaptic hemorrhage or secondary infarction case was found in the treated group.
CONCLUSIONTHTD may have bi-directional regulation on coagulation mechanism and fibrinolysis promoting mechanism, thus to benefit the resolving and absorption of hematoma in stroke patients, which plays important role in preventing relapse and secondary infarction, raising the cure rate, reducing mortality and disability rate.

Chinese Journal of Hospital Administration 2010;26(2):115-117
A series of surveillance and management actions was taken to minimize out-of-plan re-operations. These actions include: 1) Building and completing the surveillance and management mechanism against unplanned re-operations; 2) Building a real-time surveillance and reporting mechanism; 3) Enhancing quality control and continuous improvement at the operating departments; 4) Enhancing the supervision on regulations implementation by quality control departments of the hospital; 5) Enhancing quality control for medical records; 6) Building a feedback mechanism for surveillance results; 7) Building a penalty and reward mechanism. Efforts for one year and a half on such surveillance and management proved successful, as the incidence of out-of-plan re-operations fell from 1.7% before these actions to 1.0% afterwards.
