1.Homonymous Central Scotomatous Visual Field Defect in a Patient with Lateral Geniculate Nucleus Infarction

Incongruous visual field defects, such as sectoranopia, can result from lateral geniculate nucleus infarction. We present a rare case of right lateral geniculate nucleus infarction that manifests as a left inferior homonymous paracentral scotoma. According to the retinotopic organization of the visual tract, central vision from the macula is delivered to the occipital pole via the posterior portion of the lateral geniculate nucleus. Consequently, not only can occipital pole infarction lead to central visual loss, but partial lateral geniculate nucleus infarction can also produce similar manifestations of central visual loss.
2.Dietary quality of lunches in senior leisure service facilities in South Korea: analysis of data from the 2013–2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES:
This study analyzed the quality of lunches provided in senior leisure service (SLS) facilities and compared institutional foodservice (IF) and noninstitutional foodservice (non-IF).
SUBJECTS/METHODS:
Data of 390 adults aged 65 years or older who ate lunches in SLS facilities were analyzed using the information from the 2013–2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The participants were classified into IF (n = 129) and non-IF (n = 261) groups according to meal type provided. The intake of major food groups, energy and nutrients, and nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and mean adequacy ratio (MAR) were analyzed. The diversity of meals was evaluated by food group patterns, dietary diversity score (DDS) and dietary variety score (DVS). Energy intake was adjusted in model 1, while energy and sex were adjusted in model 2. All confounding variables were adjusted in model 3.
RESULTS:
The intake of seafoods (P < 0.001 in models 1, 2, and 3), seaweeds (P < 0.01 in models 1 and 2), and dairy products (P < 0.05 in models 1, 2, and 3) was significantly higher in the IF group. No significant difference existed in energy intake; however, the intake of all nutrients except carbohydrate and vitamin C was significantly higher in the IF group. NAR of all nutrients, excluding vitamin C, was higher in the IF group, and MAR was also higher in the IF group (P < 0.001 in models 1, 2, and 3). The IF group had significantly higher DDS and DVS than the non-IF group (P < 0.001).
CONCLUSIONS
The lunches provided in SLS facilities were better in terms of quantity and quality when provided through IF than through non-IF. More systematic foodservice programs should be implemented in SLS facilities, especially in facilities wherein users prepare their own meals.

4.Current status of meal and snack service in elementary care classes in Gyeonggi area.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the current status of food service management in elementary care classes. METHODS: A focus group interview with seven care class managers and a survey with 101 care class managers using a self-administered questionnaire in Gyeonggi province were conducted. RESULTS: In the focus group interview, purchased meals and snacks were evaluated as low quality by the care class managers. Frequent use of frozen or processed food and products with low prices were also reported as problems. Care class managers were in charge of meal and snack planning without any guidelines or expert advices. The results of the survey show that most schools serve purchased snacks and meals. The average unit costs of one meal and snack were 4,062 and 1,463 Won, respectively. The average unit costs of snacks during semester (p = 0.015) and vacation (p = 0.039) were significantly lower in rural than urban areas. The percentages of schools that prepared nutrition standards for meal and snack planning in elementary care classes were only 7.4% and 10.9%, respectively. The meal menus were mostly provided by catering service companies, and the snack menus were planned mostly by the care class managers. Menu planning by the care class managers was more usual in rural than urban areas (p = 0.054 for meal planning and p = 0.008 for snack planning). Just 33.7% of schools introduced safety standards for food service in elementary care classes, and more than half of the respondents (56.4%) did not do a regular medical check-up. Only 33.7% of the respondents received education for food safety. CONCLUSION: These results show the necessity for establishment of detailed guidelines for food service in elementary care classes and for the introduction of a food safety and nutrition education program customized for care class managers.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastomas are associated with a high risk of systemic embolization in spite of benign nature. We report a case of 85-year-old patient with left supraclinoid internal carotid artery occlusion who treated with aspiration thrombectomy. Despite of the absence of residual mass on echocardiography, we could analyze pathologic specimens using retrieved embolus and confirmed cardiac papillary fibroelastoma as a rare cause of stroke.
6.Effect of N-Methyl-N-Nitrosourea on Helicobacter-induced Gastric Carcinogenesis in C57BL/6 Mice.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) treatment followed by chronic Helicobacter pylori SS1 and H. felis colonization on the stomachs of C57BL/6 mice. The role of MNU and Helicobacter species in gastric carcinogenesis was also elucidated. METHODS: A total of 69 C57BL/6 mice at 4 weeks of age were divided into 6 groups according to MNU treatment and H. pylori SS1 or H. felis infection. The mice were sacrificed at 21 and 50 weeks. The degree of inflammation was determined by histopathology. The levels of gastric mucosal myeloperoxidase, TNF-α, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) were measured by ELISA. RESULTS: In the H. felis groups with or without MNU, the incidence of gastric tumors was 21.1% and 35.0% at 21 and 50 weeks, respectively. No gastric tumors were observed in all control mice. At 50 weeks, 37.5% of gastric adenoma cases were observed in the H. felis alone and MNU + H. felis groups. Furthermore, 12.5% of gastric adenocarcinoma cases were observed in the MNU alone and MNU + H. felis groups. The gastric mucosal IL-1β level was significantly higher in the MNU + H. felis group at 21 weeks and H. felis group at 50 weeks, respectively, than that for control mice (P < 0.05). However, the effect of MNU on H. pylori SS1-induced gastric carcinogenesis was low compared to that on H. felis. CONCLUSIONS: Administration of MNU before H. felis infection provokes severe inflammation through IL-1β, and eventually induces gastric cancer. However, the role of MNU in H. pylori SS1-induced gastric carcinogenesis model is minor.

Rosa hybrida has been demonstrated to exert biological effects on several cell types. This study investigated the efficacy of the edible ethanol extract of R.hybrida (EERH) against human colorectal carcinoma cell line (HCT116) cells.MATERIALS/METHODS: HCT116 cells were cultured with different concentrations of EERH (0, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 µg/mL) in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle medium. Cell viability was measured using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide and viable cell counting assays. Cell cycle pattern was observed by flow cytometry analysis. The wound-healing migration assay, invasion assay, and zymography were used to determine the migratory and invasive level of HCT116 cells treated with EERH. The protein expression and binding ability level of HCT116 cells following EERH treatment were analyzed via immunoblotting and the electrophoretic mobility shift assay.
RESULTS:
EERH suppressed HCT116 cell proliferation, thus arresting the G1-phase cell cycle.It also reduced cyclin-dependent kinases and cyclins, which are associated with p27KIP1 expression. Additionally, EERH differentially regulated the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase, p38, and protein kinase B. Moreover, EERH treatment inhibited the enzymatic activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and MMP-2, resulting in HCT116 cell migration and invasion. The EERH-induced inhibition of MMP-9 and MMP-2 was attributed to the reduced transcriptional binding of activator protein-1, specificity protein-1, and nuclear factor-κB motifs in HCT116 cells. Kaempferol was identified as the main compound contributing to EERH's antitumor activity.
CONCLUSION
EERH inhibits HCT116 cell proliferation and metastatic potential. Therefore, it is potentially useful as a preventive and curative nutraceutical agent against colorectal cancer.
