2.Different Expression of p27(kip1) and p57(kip2) by Genistein Treatment in MDA-MB-231 Human Breast Cancer Cells.

PURPOSE: The isoflavones in soy are likely to contribute to the historically low incidence of breast cancer among Asian women who consume traditional diets. The possible role of isoflavones in controlling the expression of p27(kip1) and p57(kip2) has not been previously explored. In this study, the ability of the isoflavone, genistein, to regulate the expression of p27(kip1) and p57(kip2) in breast cancer cells was evaluated. METHODS: The effects of genistein was examined on the expression of p27(kip1) and p57(kip2) at the mRNA level, using the MDA-MB 231 human breast cancer cell lines. RESULTS: By genistein treatment, p27(kip1) mRNA increased significantly in comparison to the control group. In particular, p27(kip1) mRNA level in 10 micrometer and 50 micrometer genistein treated- groups increased about two-folds more than the control. p57(kip2) mRNA was not different from control group. p57(kip2) mRNA decreased slightly only in the 50 micrometer genistein treated-group. PPAR-gamma mRNA level increased slightly according to the concentration-dependent manner of genistein, but it was not significantly different. Conclusions: These results suggest that the up-regulated p27(kip1) by genistein might contribute to cancer prevention or inhibition.

We report a non-obese patient suffering from spastic gait and right leg paresis caused by thoracic spinal cord compression secondary to spinal epidural lipomatosis. Although spinal epidural lipomatosis is most often associated with the administration of exogenous steroid or endogenous Cushing syndrome, obesity also has been reported as a possible cause. However, idiopathic(non-glucocorticoid induced) spinal epidural lipomatosis in non-obese healthy man is an extremely rare disease and dose not have any good explanation for the abnormal fat deposition in spinal epidural space. We recently experienced a patient with idiopathic thoracic epidural lipomatosis in whom MRI and histopathology established the specific diagnosis. With a case report, brief review of the disease including clinical feature, diagnostic procedure and therapeutic considerations is described.

7.Health Behaviors and Health Perception among medical and non-medical students.

BACKGROUND: The interest of medicine was moved from disease treatment to disease prevention and health promotion. Especially, there has been marked increased interest in health promotion recently. Perception and health behaviors held or acquired during medical training can influence the acceptance and prevention strategies. This exploratory study surveyed medical and non-medical student to assess both preventive health behaviors and perception, to find relations of personal behaviors and corresponding perception. METHODS: This survey were conducted 140 medical students and 131 non-medical students in one big city. Data were obtained by self-reported questionnaire. Weschler survey was adapted to assess perception toward preventive behavior, and Fantastic lifestyle was adapt,ed to assess health behavior. RESULTS: Among the questionnaire of perception of preventive behavior, quitting cigarette smoking ranked highest frequency as very important in medical student. In non-medical student, use seat-belt is ranked highest frequency. Mean score of FANTASTIC lifestyle is 29.98 in medical student, 28.86 in non-medical. The result show significant relationship between st,udent-reported behavior and corresponding perception in 6 qestionnaire that is eat breakfast, moderate or no alcohol use, eliminate smoking, use seat belt, limit coffee, get seven hours sleep. CONCLUSIONS: In comparing medical and non-medical students, health perception and health behavior were no significant difference. Overall, the result indicated that the preponderance of respondents that is engaging in health behaviors are high in health perception.

8.Effect of Eicosapentaenioc acid and Butyrated hydroxyanisole on Hypercholestrolemic Diet Induced Atherogenesis in Rabbit.

It has been suggested that the fish oil can reduce atherogenesis in humans and animals, and that peroxidation of lipoproteins may be a major factor causing atherosclerotic lesions. We tested these posibilities in rabbits fed an atherogenic diet by comparing the effect of a eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA: a major component of fish oil)supplement and a butyrated hydroxyanisole(BHA: antioxidant)diet supplement. Tweenty-eight young male New Zealand White rabbits were used in this study. The animals were divided by control, cholesterol fed only, cholesterol + EPA, and cholesterol + BHA groups. The experimental course lasted 12 weeks and animals were sacrificed periodically(2, 5, 8, 12weeks)for quantitative studies of aortic atherosclerosis using light and electron microscopy. Plasma cholesterol levels were determined and lipopreteins were separated periodically. The cholesterol fed only group showed an increased serum cholseterol level and atherosclerotic lesions from 5 weeks of experiments. The EPA supplement resulted in similiar serum cholesterol levels with cholesterol fed only group, but greater lesion than cholesterol fed only group. The BHA supplement resulted in higher serum cholesterol levels except VLDL-cholesterol than EPA supplement group. However, the atherosclerotic lesion was not increased. Our studies support the theory that oxidative modification of lipoproteins is important for the atherogenesis and antioxidant may have a protective effect. However, it failed to show antiatherogenesis effect of fish oil.

9.A Case of Pigmented Apocrine Hidrocystoma Occuring on the Vulva.

A 7-year-old female was presentd with two black papules and linear pigmentation between papules on the vulva. No other abnormalities were found in her personal and family history. Histopathological examination was consistent with the apocrine hidrocystoma and the pigment in the luminal cells was iron negative and Fontana Masson positive, confirming its melanin nature. We herein report a 7-year-old female patient with pigmented apocrine hidrocystoma occuring on the vulva with the evidence of melanin as the underlying mechanism of the pigmentation.

10.Left Stellate Ganglion Block Prior to Induction of Anesthesia for Surgical Sympathectomy in a Patient with Long QT Syndrome.

Long QT Syndrome is characterized by syncope and fatal ventricular arrhythmia. Monotherapy with beta blockers is the first-line therapy. In patients with recurrent syncope despite therapy with beta blockers, combinations of the following modalities of treatment may be considered: pacemakers, left cervicothoracic sympathectomy, and implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Recently, we anesthetized a patient with Long QT Syndrome who underwent thoracoscopic left upper ganglionectomy for recurrent episodes of syncope and ventricular arrhythmia despite aggressive use of propranolol. Because of the increased risk of developing fatal ventricular arrhythmias during anesthesia and surgery, we performed a left stellate ganglion block prior to induction of anesthesia to prevent the ventricular arrhythmia that may be triggered by stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system and to assess the effect of surgical ganglionectomy on the QT interval. Following the block, the QT interval was shortened, and anesthesia and surgery was uneventful though anesthetic induction caused serious sympathetic responses. We recommend a left stellate ganglion block prior to induction of anesthesia in patients with Long QT Syndrome resistant to beta blocker to prevent fatal arrhythmia and to predict the efficacy of the surgical sympathectomy on the QT interval.
