1.Histological & Ultrastructural Changes after High-velocity Steel Bullet Injury at various Intervals
Journal of Third Military Medical University 1983;0(03):-
This article is to report the histological and ultrastructural changes after high-velocity steel bullet injury on the hind legs of 15 dogs. The degree and extent of the bullet wound were observed 6, 12. and 24 hours after injury. It was found that under either light or electron microscope, there was rather apparent damage of the tissues in the contusion zone and also various intensity of damage in both the internal and external layers of the concussion zone at the 6th hour after injury. At the 24th hour after injury, the intensity of damage is somewhat similar to that at the 6th hour except that the breaking down of the necrotic tissues and infiltration of inflammatory cells in the contusion zone were more marked and the degenerative and destructive changes of myofibrils and some or-ganells such as mitochondria were reduced in both the internal and external layers of the concussion zone. It was confirmed with electron microscopy that damage of tissues could be observed in the area 3 cm. from the wall of the wound tract. Most changes in the concussion zone were reversible with the lapse of time.
2.Statins and Blood-Brain Barrier
International Journal of Cerebrovascular Diseases 2006;0(09):-
By inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, statins up-regulate the expression and activation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in brain tissues, increase the levels of serum catalase and plasma nitric oxide, enhance antioxidant capacity, decrease oxygen free radical release, improve immunoreactivities of tight junction (zonula occludens), transmembrane proteins and glial fibrillary acidic protein of astrocyte. Stains may also exert the effects that is completely unrelated with inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, e.g. binding to leucocyte function-associated antigen-1(LFA-1) L-site, restraining its interactions between LFA-1 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and playing anti-inflammation and immunoloregulation roles. The above mechanisms contribute to remain the integrity of blood-brain barrier and the activity of astrocyte under the pathological conditions.

Aim To investigate the contribution of cardiac L-and L/T-type Ca 2+ channels blockers on matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) protein expression and fibronectin (FN) degradation following myocardial infarction(MI). Methods Rat MI model was established by permanent ligation of left coronary artery. Infarcted rats were orally treated with placebo, amlodipine (L-channel blocker, 4 mg?kg -1?d -1) or mibefradil (L/T-Channel blocker, 10 mg?kg -1?d -1) for 7 days before induction of myocardial infarction. Protein levels of MMP-2,3,9 and FN distribution were assayed by immunoflorescence at 1, 3, 7 days post coronary occlusion in left ventricular free wall (LVFW) and myocardium interventricular septum (IS). Results Pathological changes of myocardial tissues in IS and LVFW showed typical myocardial remodeling. The hypertrophy was dominant in IS, but in LVFW the characteristics including disordered alignament, hypertrophy of the myocytes, the discontinuity, dissolving of carediomyofibrills, and the hyperplasia of interstitial tissue were found 7 days after MI. The protein levels of MMP-2,3,9 increased in IS 1,3,7 days post MI gradually, whereas the protein levels of FN decreased gradually, the protein levels of MMP-2,3,9 increased significantly in LVFW 7 days post MI, and the protein levels of FN decreased significantly compared to control group, respectively(P

Objective To investigate the serum levels of uric acid (UA) in bipolar disorder patients and their clini?cal significance. Methods Serum levels of UA was measured in 126 bipolar disorder patients including 77 mania pa?tients and 49 depression patients, 69 first-episode schizophrenic patients and 126 healthy controls (control group). Bipo?lar disorder patients was assessed by using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD). Results The serum UA levels were significantly higher in bipolar group [(349.34 ± 107.21) μmol/L] than in schizophrenic group [(319.71±84.48)μmol/L] and in control group [(280.94±71.90)μmol/L] (P<0.01). There were signifi?cant differences in serum UA levels between manic episode and depressive episode [(366.45 ± 104.01) μmol/L vs. (322.45±107.69)μmol/L]. The serum UA levels were higher in both manic episode and depressive episode groups than in control group (P<0.01). The serum UA levels was not significantly different between patients with and without medication (P>0.05). Correlation analysis indicated that the correlation of serum UA levels with YMRS scores and HAMD scores was not significant in bipolar disorder patients (P>0.05). Conclusions Patients with bipolar disorder has elevated serum uric acid levels which may be a biomarkers of bipolar disorder.
