This study aims to investigate the genetic characteristics of hemagglutinin in wild-type measles viruses in Henan Province, China and to provide a basis for measles control and elimination. Specimens were collected from suspected measles cases in Henan during 2008-2012. Cell culture was performed for virus isolation, and RT-PCR was used to amplify hemagglutinin gene. The PCR products were sequenced and analyzed, including construction of phylogenetic tree and analysis of the distance between the isolated virus and the reference virus; then, the variations in predicted amino acids were analyzed. The results showed that 12 measles viruses were isolated in Henan Province and identified as H1a genotype; the nucleotide and amino acid homologies were 98.0%-100% and 97.2%-99.8%, respectively. One glycosylation site changed in all the 12 sequences because of the amino acid mutation from serine to asparagine at the 240th site, as compared with Edmonston-wt. USA/54/A. Overall, the wild-type measles virus genotype circulating in Henan Province from 2008 to 2012 was H1a, with high homology between strains; there were some variations in amino acid sequences, resulting in glycosylation site deletion.

Objective: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) at Huantiao (GB 30) and Weizhong (BL 40) on thigmesthesia, gait function, and expression levels of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) in rabbits with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LIDH). Methods: Forty healthy New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into a blank control group, a model group, an EA at acupoint group and an EA at non-acupoint group, with 10 rabbits in each group. The LIDH pathological model of rabbit was established using the self-made LIDH model maker. The thigmesthesia and gait function of rabbits were recorded by Siegal method. The serum IgG and IgM expression levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: EA at Huantiao (GB 30) and Weizhong (BL 40) could improve the clinical symptoms of thigmesthesia and gait function, and inhibit the expressions of serum IgG and IgM in the LIDH rabbits, which were significantly different compared with those in the model group and EA at non-acupoint group. Conclusion: EA at Huantiao (GB 30) and Weizhong (BL 40) can improve the clinical symptoms of LIDH rabbits, which is associated with inhibition of the serum IgG and IgM expressions and reduction of the immunoinflammatory factor release. This may be one of the mechanisms of EA at Huantiao (GB 30) and Weizhong (BL 40) in the treatment of LIDH.

OBJECTIVETo transfer the effective elements of Bupleurum scorzonerifolium into carrot, and provide theoretical data for the exploitation, improvement and selection of the germplasm of Chinese medicinal plants.
METHODThe protoplasta of Bupleurum scorzonerifolium irradiated by ultraviolet light (UV) at an intensity of 300 microW.(cm2)-1 for 0, 1, 2 min respectively were fused with those of carrot Fisch by PEG method. The regenerated clones, derived form a single fused cell, were examined for their hybrid nature by phenotype and Esterase isoenzyme analysis.
RESULTNine clones were identified as the somatic hybrids between B. scorzonerifolium and carrot.
CONCLUSIONThis provides a firm foundation for the further analysis of the main active components saikosaponin of somatic hybrids and the screening out of high-medicine-content hybrid cell lines.

Objective: To investigate the effects of preoperative sarcopenia on postoperative clinical outcome in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: A prospective study was performed in 93 patients with gastric cancer and the skeletal muscle mass was examined by bioelectrical impedance. The primary outcome was postoperative complications. The secondary outcomes were postoperative length of stay, overall hospital costs, 60 days re-admission and mortality rate. Results: A significant difference (sarcopenia group vs. non-sarcopenia group) was observed in the rates of overall postoperative complications, incidence of pleural effusion and intra-abdominal infection, overall hospital stay and postoperative hospital stay (P < 0. 05). The rates of 60 days readmission, 60 days mortality and hospital costs in sarcopenia group were not different between the two groups (P > 0. 05). By univariate and multivariate analysis, preoperative sarcopenia and preoperative nutritional risk are the risk factors of postoperative complications. Conclusion: Sarcopenia is an independent risk factor for postoperative complications in patients with gastric cancer; preoperative patients with sarcopenia have a worse prognosis and should be screened and optimized before surgery.

Objective To explore the effect of erythropoietin (EPO) on angiotensin Ⅱ (Ang Ⅱ) induced neonatal rat cardiomyocyte hypertrophy and the association with PI3K/Akt-eNOS signaling pathway. Methods Cardiomyocytes were isolated from new-born Sprague-Dawley rats and stimulated by Ang Ⅱ in vitro. The cell surface area and mRNA expression of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) of cardiomyocytes were determined in the presence and absence of various concentrations of EPO, phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor LY294002 and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor L-NAME. Intracellular signal molecules, such as Akt, phosphorylated Akt, eNOS and phosphorylated eNOS protein expressions were detected by western blot. Nitric oxide (NO) level in the supernatant of cultured cardiomyocytes was assayed by NO assay kit. Results EPO (20 U/ml) significantly inhibited Ang Ⅱ induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy as shown by decreased cell surface area and ANF mRNA expression (all P <0.05). EPO also activated Akt and enhanced the expression of eNOS and its phosphorylation (all P < 0.05), increased the NO production (P <0.01). These effects could be partially abolished by cotreatment with LY294002 or L-NAME (all P < 0.05). Conclusion EPO attenuates Ang Ⅱ induced cardiomyocytes hypertrophy via activating PI3K-Akt-eNOS pathway and promoting NO production.

Chinese Medical Journal 2011;124(17):2593-2598
BACKGROUNDCentral neurocytoma accounts for 0.1% of primary brain tumor that often occurs in young adults. Surgery is the main treatment for central neurocytoma and the rate of 5-year survival reaches up to over 90%. This study aimed to assess the effect of transcortical frontal approach to surgical resection of central neurocytoma on emotion and cognitive function 5 years after surgery.
METHODSTelephone following-up visits were used in this study. By means of neuropsychological testing, assayed emotion, memory and abstract thinking ability of 18 patients undergoing central neurocytoma resection by transcortical frontal approach for 5 years or more, with another 21 normal cases as control group were enrolled. The data were analyzed statistically by paired t test with SPSS11.5.
RESULTSPatients whose central neurocytoma was removed by transcortical frontal approach were not affected on calculating ability 5 years after operation while ability of memory declined sharply (P = 0.000), the older, the more sharply (P = 0.036). Ability of abstract thinking was significantly reduced (P = 0.000), the older, the more significantly as well (P = 0.012); additionally, anxiety and depression occurred in patients rather more than those of control group (P = 0.000), especially cognitive impairment.
CONCLUSIONSTranscortical frontal approach for surgical resection of central neurocytoma has certain long-term influence on patients' life quality, vulnerable to anxiety, depression and cognitive impairment, the severity of which was correlated to age. Therefore, improving surgical approach will be of value for better long-term life quality of patients.
