1.Correlation between Systolic Blood Pressure and Triglyceride Level in the Uzbekistan Population

Objectives:
: This study aimed to characteristic the systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic pressure, pulse pressure, glucose, creatine, and lipid profile. This study also aimed to investigate the prevalence of hypertension and the relationship between hypertension and the lipid profile in Uzbekistan.
Methods:
The subjects consisted of 58 Uzbekistan subjects recruited from Ewha Medical Care patients. Blood samples were collected from the patients for the lipid profile and random glucose and creatinine levels. Paired t tests were used for the group means and a chi-square or Fisher’s exact test for categorical variables. A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed.
Results:
Among the 58 patients constituting the baseline population, hypertension developed in 42 patients. Among them, the triglyceride (TG) level was significantly higher in the hypertension group than normal group (173.19 vs. 127.06 mg/dL, P=0.014). The SBP had a positive correlation with the TG (r=0.979, P<0.01) and creatinine (r=0.002, P<0.05) levels and also, the pulse pressure had a positive correlation with the cholesterol level (r=0.539, P<0.05). A multivariate analysis (adjusted for age and sex) indicated that there was a positive correlation between the SBP and TG level (r=0.941, P<0.05).
Conclusion
There was a positive correlation between the SBP and TG level in the Uzbekistan population according to this study.

3.Classification of Chronic Dizziness in Elderly People and Relation with Falls

OBJECTIVES: Fall is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults. Falls result from many various causes, and dizziness is important risk for falls, especially in the elderly. Research on the relationship between chronic dizziness and falls in elderly people has been rarely performed and these were no studies that analyzed the risk of falls according to subtypes of chronic dizziness. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of the association between subtypes of chronic dizziness and falls in the elderly between 65 to 75 years. We divided dizzy patients into 5 groups according to the results of symptom, vestibular and autonomic function test. Falls and new events (acute dizziness or other medical conditions) were checked monthly by telephone or out patient department follow-up for 6 months. RESULTS: Thirty-four patients were enrolled and all completed follow-up for 6 months. Nine patients classified as the falling groups and 34 patients as nonfalling group. Whereas the frequencies of orthostatic hypotension (n=6, 67%) and vestibular dysfunction (n=1, 11%) were higher in fall group, psychogenic dizziness (n=12, 35%), and vestibular migraine (n=3, 9%) were more frequent in nonfall group. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of dizziness in the elderly is a strong predictor of fall, especially orthostatic hypotension is an important predictor of fall. In order to lower the risk of falls in the elderly, an approach based on the cause of dizziness is needed.

4.Effects of 630 nm Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation on Caveolin-1 and Procollagen I and III Expression in Human Dermal Fibroblasts.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that light-emitting diodes (LED) may represent a novel and effective anti-aging light source for the skin. Among many candidate molecules known to control collagens, caveolin-1 (Cav-1) is known to play an inhibitory role in cutaneous collagen metabolism. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of LED irradiation on the expression levels of Cav-1 and procollagens (proCOLs) in human dermal fibroblasts (HDFs). METHODS: Cultured HDFs were irradiated with 630 nm LED at different doses, and the mRNA and protein expression levels of Cav-1 and proCOLs I/III were analyzed. RESULTS: In LED-irradiated HDFs, mRNA and protein levels of Cav-1 were found to be down-regulated, whereas those of proCOLs I/III were up-regulated in a dose-dependent manner. A negative correlation between Cav-1 and proCOLs was verified in Cav-1 siRNA transfected HDFs. LED was moreover found to result in up-regulation of transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta1 and its receptors (TbetaRI, TbetaRII), SMAD1, and SMAD2 mRNA levels, indicating that LED may activate the TGF-1/TbetaR/SMAD pathway in HDFs. CONCLUSION: The anti-aging effects of 630 nm LED on human skin are likely mediated by up-regulation of proCOLs I/III and inhibition of Cav-1 expression levels in HDFs.

5.Investigation of the association between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction in the South Korean population

OBJECTIVE:
This study investigated the relationship between orthodontic treatment and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in South Korean population.
METHODS:
This study obtained data from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The final sample size was 5,567 participants who were ≥ 19 years of age. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between orthodontic treatment and TMD.
RESULTS:
Participants who underwent orthodontic treatment showed higher educational level, lower body mass index, reduced chewing difficulty, and reduced speaking difficulty. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for orthodontic treatment and TMD were 1.614 (1.189–2.190), 1.573 (1.162–2.129) and 1.612 (1.182–2.196) after adjusting for age, sex and psychosocial factors. Adjusted ORs and their 95% CIs for orthodontic treatment and clicking were 1.778 (1.289–2.454), 1.742 (1.265–2.400) and 1.770 (1.280–2.449) after adjusting for confounding factors. However, temporomandibular joint pain and functional impairment was not associated with orthodontic treatment.
CONCLUSIONS
Temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction was not associated with orthodontic treatment.

Tissue damage caused by various stimuli under certain conditions, such as biological and environmental cues, can actively induce systemic and/or local immune responses. Therefore, understanding the immunological perspective would be critical to not only regulating homeostasis of organs and tissues but also to restrict and remodel their damage.Lungs serve as one of the key immunological organs, and thus, in the present article, we focus on the innate and adaptive immune systems involved in remodeling and engineering lung tissue. Innate immune cells are known to react immediately to damage. Macrophages, one of the most widely studied types of innate immune cells, are known to be involved in tissue damage and remodeling, while type 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) have recently been revealed as an important cell type responsible for tissue remodeling. On the other hand, adaptive immune cells are also involved in damage control. In particular, resident memory T cells in the lung prevent prolonged disease that causes tissue damage. In this review, we first outlined the structure of the respiratory system with biological and environmental cues and the innate/adaptive immune responses in the lung. It is our hope that understanding an immunological perspective for tissue remodeling and damage control in the lung will be beneficial for stakeholders in this area.
8.The Incidence, Treatment and Risk Factors of Candidiasis in Very Low Birth Weight Infants.

PURPOSE: Candidiasis is an important morbidity among very low birth weight infants (VLBWI). There is a little data on the risk factors in VLBWI. This study was done to describe the incidence, treatment, and risk factors of candidiasis in VLBWI. METHODS: From September 2008 to December 2011, medical records of 130 infants with VLBWI in Inje University Ilsan Paik hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were reviewed retrospectively. Seventeen infants were diagnosed with candidiasis and treated with antifungal agent. Patients were divided into the candidiasis group (CAN, n=17), the bacterial sepsis group (BAC, n=34), and the non-sepsis group (Non-SEP, n=74). Demographic findings and factors associated with candidiasis were compared between these groups. RESULTS: The mean gestational age was significantly low in the CAN group, but birth weight was not significantly different between the groups. The maternal demographic findings were not significantly different between the groups. The incidence of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is higher in the CAN group compared to these groups (P<0.05). The durations of intubation and central venous line were significantly longer in the CAN group than in the other groups (P<0.05). In the logistic regression analysis, the duration of central venous line is the significant factor for candidiasis (P=0.003, odd ratio: 1.56, 95% confidence interval: 1.39-1.68). CONCLUSION: The incidence of candidiasis in VLBWI was 13.1 % and the risk factor for candidiasis was longer duration of central venous line in our study.

9.NAD(P)H-quinone oxidoreductase-1 silencing modulates cytoprotection related protein expression in cisplatin cytotoxicity.

NAD(P)H-quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1) is a down-stream target gene of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), and performs diverse biological functions. Recently, NQO1 is recognized as an effective gene for the cytotoxic inserts with its diverse biological functions, which is focused on antioxidant properties. The aim of present study was to assess the impact of NQO1 knockdown on cytoprotection-related protein expression in cisplatin cytotoxicity by using small interfering (si) RNA targeted on NQO1 gene. Cytotoxicity of cisplatin on ACHN cells was assessed in a dose- and time-dependent manner after siScramble or siNQO1 treatment. After cisplatin treatment, cells were subjected to cell viability assay, western-blot analysis, and immunofluorescence study. The cell viability was decreased in the siNQO1 cells (50%) than the siScramble cells (70%) after 24 h of cisplatin (20 µM) treatment. Moreover, cytoprotection-related protein expressions were markedly suppressed in the siNQO1 cells after cisplatin treatment. The expression of Nrf2 and Klotho were decreased by 20% and 40%, respectively, of that in siScramble cells. Nrf2 and Klotho activation were also decreased in cisplatin treated siNQO1 cells, confirmed by cytoplasm-to-nuclear translocation. Our findings demonstrate that the increased cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity was accompanied by suppressed Nrf2 activation and Klotho expression in siNQO1 cells.

10.Total Ankle Arthroplasty: An Imaging Overview.

With advances in implant technology, total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has become an increasingly popular alternative to arthrodesis for the management of end-stage ankle arthritis. However, reports in the literature do not focus on the imaging features of TAA. Through a literature review, we demonstrate basic design features of the current ankle arthroplasty system, and the normal and abnormal postoperative imaging features associated with such devices. Pre- and postoperative evaluations of ankle arthroplasty mainly include radiography; in addition, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging provide further characterization of imaging abnormalities. Familiarization with multimodal imaging features of frequent procedural complications at various postoperative intervals is important in radiological practice.
