UV-absorption method was able to determine protease activities in various kinds of enzymatic cleaners. Bioclen G and O2 had high protease activeities at room temperature and were effective for artificial protein deposits; Bioclen G is safe for the eyes because enzyme was inactivated at 70 degrees C. Both products were better enzymatic cleaners for both hard and soft contact lenses. Hydrocare-F was effective for removing artificial protein deposits. For the sake of safety against the eyes, there was a problem in that this product had too high protease activity at 90 degrees C. These had lower cleaning effect for artificial protein deposits on rigid gas permeable contact lenses.

The times of uptake and release of pilocarpine solution by soft contact lenses were studied with spectrophometer in vitro. The uptake time was about 30 minutes and the releasing time was stationary after 30 minutes. The lower concentriction of pilocarpine solution was generally rapid uptake and release than higher.

Corneal sensitivity was measured with the Cachet-Bonnet aesthesiometer in control group of 24 people with 24 eyes and in 36 people with 56 eyes who had worn daily wear soft contact lenses for various amount of years. The sensitivity in the control cornea of the normal eyes was 59 +/- 4mm and decreased gradually by duration in myopic patients with daily wear soft contact lenses. And corneal sensitivity in old aged group was lower than that in young aged group.

The clinical evaluation of the "O3/O4" series of Bausch and Lomb company for extended wear were performed in 138 eyes of 69 patients. In 128 eyes(92.1%) of them the corrected visual acuity over 0.8 was obtained and wearing periods of contact lenses were ranged from 1 day to 3 weeks (mean: 9.2 days). 117 eyes were satified with the contact lenses having no remarkable complications. There were no significant changes in corneal curvature between the examinations before and after contact lens wearing. From the above results, it can be suggested that the O3/O4 extended wear soft contact lenses are clinically available with excellent improvement of visual acuity.

Causative bacterias of keratitis due to mishandling of contact lenses are mainly Gram negative rods, and large percentage of them are Pseudomonas. We experienced 6 cases of culture-proven Pseudomonas keratitis due to mishandling of soft contact lenses and wetting solution can be cultured. They are lack of education as how handle the contact lenses safely. And they did not done disinfection of the soft contact lens cases. To prevent contact lens related keratitis, we think it is very important for users to know its possible complication and how to use it and disinfect it safely.

The clinical life-time and the causes for the change of soft contact lens(SCL) were analyzed according to the sex, age and kinds of SCL. The clinical life-time(time interval of changing of the SCL) was 6.9 months on the average. In the clinical life-time and the causes for the change of SCL, there were no sexual difference and also no difference between plus and minus lenses(p>0.05). However, there were significant differences in them according to the age and kinds of SCL(p<0.05).In groups below 10 years old and over 60 years old, and in the extended SCL, loss rates were relatively high. This was thought to be related to shortening theclinical life-time of SCL.

The therapeutic applications of Soft Contact Lenses including its optical use are most popular, devices in Ophthalmological field. The presoaked soft contact lenses (Bionite Lens) by 1% pilocarpine,10% phenylnephrine. 1% homatropine, and 1% atropine for 4 minutes are inserted into the albino rabbit and the size of pupil was measured using mm. caliper under the dim red light in the dark room. Hourly measurements were carried out and were stopped in each subject when the pupil size of both eyes had returned to normal. The pupil size of control group, which only the above drug were instilled into the conjunctival cuI de sac, was also measured as the same method. As conclusion using soft contact lens in the therapeutic purpose, it potentiate the effect of medication and prolong the time of drug effect compared with the control groups.

Noncontact tonometer is a convenient instrument for checking of intraocular pressure without corneal touch. We compared the IOP of 45 eyes in 24 patients with and without soft contact lenses. Two measurements were taken on each eye while the patients were wearing soft conbtact lenses by noncontact tonometry, and rechecked immediatly after the lenses were removed. There was no significant differance between two measurements(t-test, P>0.05).

Radial keratotomy utilizing the American technique was performed on ten rabbit eyes. After 3 months, operated eyes were fitted with extended wear soft contact lenses for 2 weeks and as control group, the normal ten rabbit eyes were also fitted with the same contact lenses. Corneal thickness using ultrasonic pachymeter was measured and corneal neovascularization along the incision lines was observed and the numbers of involved incision lines was recorded. The results were as follows; 1) The mean central corneal thickness of normal rabbits before and after 2 weeks of soft contact lenses wear was 0.377mm, 0.391mm respectively. 2) The mean central corneal thickness of preoperative, postop. 3 months and 2 weeks after contact lens wear was 0.380mm, 0.382mm, 0.397mm respectively. 3) The thickness of control group and experimental group showed no statistically significant difference. 4) In control group there was no corneal neovascularization after contact lens wear. While in experimental group six eyes(60%) developed the corneal neovascularization and the average length of corneal neovascularization was 2.32mm(maximum 4.7mm) (Table 3, Fig. 1,2,3).
