OBJECTIVETo study the combined effect of low temperature and vibration on function of peripheral circulation and nerve.

METHODS64 rabbits were divided into control group, low temperature group, vibration group and combined effect group randomly, 16 each group. The changes of concentration of ET, Ang II, NO in plasma and SCV, amplitude of sensory nerve action potential, latency of sensory nerve action potential, MCV, distal amplitude of motor nerve, and distal latency of motor nerve were measured before and after experiment.

RESULTSAfter experiment, the concentration of ET, Ang II, NO and SCV, amplitude of sensory nerve action potential, latency of sensory nerve action potential, MCV, distal amplitude of motor nerve, and distal latency of motor nerve were (68.84+/-14.81) pg/ml, (544.01+/-70.20) pg/ml, (123.73+/-9.58) nmol/ml, (25.36+/-6.96) m/s, (1.84+/-0.65) microV, (4.05+/-1.04) m/s, (27.40+/-6.05) m/s, (1.60+/-0.52) microV, (3.51+/-1.30) m/s respectively in low temperature group; (70.22+/-15.02) pg/ml, (540.77+/-68.25) pg/ml, (129.46+/-11.99) nmol/ml, (27.69+/-6.16) m/s, (2.19+/-0.53) microV, (3.86+/-0.89) m/s, (30.03+/-5.21) m/s, (1.65+/-0.49) microV, (3.36+/-l.11) m/s respectively in vibration group; (88.47+/-13.20) pg/ml, (687.38+/-101.44) pg/ml, (70.66+/-4.99) nmol/ml, (20.82+/-3.65) m/s, (1.21+/-0.64) microV, (5.05+/-0.94) m/s, (19.97+/-4.37) m/s, (1.09+/-0.49) microV, (4.49+/-1.26) m/s respectively in combined effect group; compared with pre-experiment, the concentration of ET and Ang II in low temperature group, vibration group and combined effect group were increased after experiment, and the NO was decreased (P<0.05); the nerve conduct velocity and amplitude was decreased and the latency was delayed (P<0.05). After experiment, the concentrations of ET and Ang II in combined effect group were higher than low temperature group and vibration group, and the concentration of NO in combined effect group was lower than low temperature group and vibration group (P<0.05). After experiment, the SCV and MCV in combined effect group were slower than low temperature group and vibration group; the amplitude of sensory nerve action potential and distal amplitude of motor nerve were less than low temperature group and vibration group; the latency of sensory nerve action potential and distal latency of motor nerve in combined effect group was longer than low temperature group and vibration group. The factorial analysis results indicated the synergistic effect between low temperature and vibration (P<0.05).

CONCLUSIONVibration-induced peripheral vascular impairment and nerve impairment would be intensified by low temperature.

OBJECTIVETo explore the impact of the socio-economic factors on the temperature-mortality association in different cities in southern China.

METHODSDaily mortality registration data, meteorological data and air pollution data of the cities as Changsha and Kunming during 2006-2009, and cities as Guangzhou and Zhuhai during 2006-2010, were collected to explore modifying effects, stratified by age, gender, education and place of death, of socio-economic factors on the association between temperature and mortality, by distributed lag non-linear model. The accumulative effect of temperature-mortality were separately analyzed in each city, under the high temperature (0-3 days) and low temperature (0-20 days) situation. The association between temperature and mortality was evaluated by general linear threshold model. The above process was firstly adopted to analyze the impact in single city and then Meta analysis was applied to analyze the impact in several cities by effect-combine.

RESULTSThe relationship between temperature and mortality in the four cities showed nonlinearity. The minimum mortality risk was separately 23.5 °C, 20.5 °C, 25.0 °C and 26.0 °C in Changsha, Kunming, Guangzhou and Zhuhai. The results of effect-combine showed that low-temperature (RR = 1.67, 95%CI:1.54-1.80) has a higher gross effect than high-temperature (RR = 1.11, 95%CI:1.01-1.18) on population. With the age increasing, risk of death increased both under high and low temperature situation, and the effect of low temperature was greater (RR = 1.83, 95%CI:1.65-2.04) for the elderly than it of high temperature (RR = 1.17, 95%CI:1.03-1.33). The mortality risk among females (cold and hot effects(95%CI) were 1.75(1.57-1.97) and 1.11(0.99-1.25), respectively)was higher than it among males (cold and hot effects(95%CI) were 1.59(1.45-1.77) and 1.11(1.03-1.19), respectively). Whereas the mortality risk on higher education population was significantly higher (cold and hot effects (95%CI) were 1.89(1.48-2.45)and 1.34(1.19-1.48), respectively) than it on other educated people.

CONCLUSIONAge, gender, educational level and place of death showed modifying effects on the association between temperature and mortality. The elderly, women and highly educated people were vulnerable to the temperature influence on mortality.

AIMTo investigate the effect of cold, partial sleep deprivation, partial sleep deprivation plus cold on blood routine parameters and erythrocyte sedimentation rate of mice.

METHODSTwenty-four Mus musculus mice were divided into four groups (n=6) randomly: (1) control, (2) cold group: mice were treated with (10 +/- 2) degrees C cold stimulation for four hours per day, (3) partial sleep deprivation group: mice were deprived sleep from 18:00 to 9:00 next day, (4) partial sleep deprivation plus cold group: mice were treated with cold stimulation based on partial sleep deprivation. After four days treatment, the mice were sacrificed and the blood was collected to detect the blood routine parameters and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.

RESULTSCompared with the control, cold stimulation would increase the contents and proportion of lymphocyte significantly. Partial sleep deprivation would decrease the white blood cell contents, lymphocyte contents and lymphocyte proportion significantly. After treated with cold stimulation plus partial sleep deprivation, the white blood cell and lymphocyte contents decreased and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate increased evidently compared with other three groups.

CONCLUSIONPartial sleep deprivation could inhibit immune function of the mice. When the mice were treated with cold stimulation plus partial sleep deprivation, the immune function of the mice would be inhibited further more and at the same time the erythrocyte sedimentation rate increased significantly.
