1.Computed tomographic evaluation of brain tumors

The advant of computerized cranial tomography represents a great advance in the diagnosis of very wide varietyof intracranial lesions. The CT findings of brain tumors have been reported by many authors, especially by Hatamin early contrast enhancement and evaluation of the intracranial lesions. A statistical analysis was performedwith 84 brain tumors cases of with diagnoses were confiremd at the department of Radiology and Pathology of theMiddlesex Hospital London from Jan. 1979 to Dec. 1980. The authors classified the intracranial tumors according toRussel and Rubinsteins classification, and especially for the changes after CT introduction. The results were asfollows; 1. Brain tumors were found most frequently in middle age group (25.7%) and the ration of male to femalwas 2:1. 2. Among the brain tumors, gliomas were found most frequently (57.1%), followed by Meningioma(20.2%),Metastatic tumors(11.9%), and pituitary adenomas (4.8%). 3. The incidence of glioma occupied(57.1%) of all braintumors and as a entity these were the highest. 4. Brain tumors occured more fequently in frontal regions (27.4%),parietal regions(17.0%), sella and para sella-regions(11.9%), cerebellum regions(9.5%). 5. Gliomas occured morefrequently inn temporal regions (20.2%) and followed by frontal regions (16.7%). 6. Since the advant of CT scan,the detection rate of brain tumors was increased, but there was no specific change in proportion of tumors.

2.An Experimental Study on Renal Functional Disturbance in Rabbits After Acute Ureteral Obstruction With Dynamic Gd-DTPA Enhanced MR Imaging.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the anatomic and functional change in acutely obstructed kidneys, and the probability of functional recovery after resolving the obstruciton. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were 5 animal groups(6 rabbits in each group)-normal control group, 4 acute ureteral obstruction group. Each of the latter group was imaged with Gd-DTPA enhanced dynamic MR 2, 6, 24, and 48 hours after ligation of the left proximal urter, respectively. We compared the findings of dynamic MR imaging and histopathological findings. RESULTS: We could observe centripetal movement of dark band pattern which could be defined as 3 phasesrenal cortex, outer medulla, and inner medulla in normal rabbits. The appearance of the dark band pattern was delayed or absent in ureteral obstruction group with a linear relationship to the duration of the obstruction. CONCLUSION: Gd-DTPA enhanced MR can be used to differentiate acute obstructive nephropathy from other causes of nephropathy and foretell the prognosis of the obstruction.

4.Radiologic study of silicosis in Korean

These radiologic studies were carried out on 265 cases of silicosis which were diagnosed clinically atindustrial Accident Hospital affiliated with Catholic Medical Collage, suring the period of 3 years from 1974 to1976. 265 cases of silicosis consisted of 96 cases (35%) of coal miner, 91 cases (34%) of coal choicer and 82cases (31%) of others. The average age was 42.2 years and average working period was 9.2years. Qualitative andquantitative features in the analysis of roentgen findings were based on UICC/Cincinnati and KLO classification.The qualitative features showed 26% of "p" opacity, 46% of "q" opacity 4% of "r" opacity as rounded profusion and5% of "s" opacity, 11% of "t" opacity, 2% of "u" opacity as irregular profusion of small opacities.Large opacitiesshowed 3% of group A, 2% of group B and 1% of group C. Quantitative features revealed 25% of Type 1, 54% of Type2, 16% of Type 3 and 5% of Type 4. The qualitative and quantitative features showed significant differences as ageand working period increased with age and working period. Major complications were pulmonary emphysema,tuberculosis and pleural abnormalities.

5.An experimental system on heart resistance by split dose hyperthermia

The study was undertaken to evaluate the heat resistance by split dose hyperthermia in various time intervaland temperature. For the experiments, 96 mice were divided into 2 groups: the first, 36 mice were used to evaluatethe skine reaction of mouse tail to single dose hyperathermia, the second, 60 mice were used to evaluate heatresistance by split dose hyperthermia in variuos time intervals. The results obtained are summarized as follows;1. The ND was 101 minutes at 43degrees centigrade(C) and 24 minutes at 45degrees C. 2. For a 1degrees C increasein temperature, a half in time was required to same degree of skin reaction. 3. Heat resistance was significantlydeveloped in split dose hyperthermia at 43degrees C and 45degrees C. 4. Development, maximum and decay of heatresistance were constant regardless of change in temperature. In summary, heat resistance in split dosehyperthermia is important in study and clinical application of heat therapy in malignant disease.

6.Evaluation of computed tomography of intraventricular hemorrhage

Prior to the introduction of CT, the clinical and radiological diagnosis of the intraventicular hemorrhage inliving patients was difficult. C.T. scanning is an invaluable investigation provding the rapid and noninvasivediagnosis of intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage. It reliably demonstrated the presence and distributionof fresh blood within the ventricular system. CT is also useful as a surgical guidance and in the evaluation offate of the hematoma by easily performable follow-up studies. We reviewed 3 cases of intraventricular hemorrhagein CT in the departement of radiology of Ewha Womans University hospital during the period from August, 1982 toAugust, 1983. The results were as follows: 1. The most patients were encountered in the 5th decade and the male tofemale ratio was 1.2:1. 2. Hypertension was the main cause of the intraventricular hemorrhage; 18 out of 31patients. Remaning 13 patients were caused by hypoxia, aneurysm, Moya Moya disease, coagulation defect, trauma andundetermined etiology. 3. 18 out of 31 patients showed hemorrhage in the lateral ventricles only and allventricles in 10 patients. 4. 28 out of 31 patients showed associated with intracranial hematoma: Those wereintracerebral hematomas in 16 patients, intracerebral hematoma with subarachnoid hemorrhage in 4 patients andextracerebral hematoma in 2 patients. 5. Outcome was assessed using the Glasgow scale. According to them the totalmortality rate was 54.8%, however, 32.2% of patients retured to normal or minor disablity. Patients, who hadhypertension and markded degree of hemorrhage in the ventricular systems had a poor outcome. Patients with onlyventricular hemorrhage had better outcome than associated intracranial hematoma. 6. 16 out of 31 patients weretreated by surgical methods and 15 out of 31 patients by conservative methods. 75% of patients were died inconservative treatment. 7. Conclusively, causes, degree of intraventricular hemorrhage and associatedintraventricular hematoma play an important role in outcome. And surgical treatment was beneficial in only a smallselective number of cases in intraventricular hemorrhage.

7.Evaluation of computer tomography in cerebro-vascular disease (strokes)

Most of cerbrovascular disease are composed of vascular occlusive changes & hemorrhage. Now a day, the computed tomograhy is the best way for evaluation of cerebrovascular disease including detection of nature,location ,& associated changes. This study includes evaluation of CT of 70 patients with cerebrovascular disease during the period of 10 months from April. 1983 to Feb. 1984 in Department of Radiology, Ewha Womans University Hospital. The results were as follows; 1. Age distribution of the total 70 patients was broad ranging from 25years to 79 years. 78.6% of patients were over the age of 50. The male and female sex ratio was 1.4:1. 2. 4 out of70 patients were normal and 66 patients revealed abnormal on C.T, findings; those were intracranial hemorrhage(28patients), cerebral infarction,(34 patients) and brain atrophy(4 patients). 3. In cases of cerebral infarction,the cerebral hemisphere was most common sit of lesion(28 cases), and next was basal ganglia (2 cases). Most of the infarcts in cerebral hemisphere were located in the parietal and temporal lobes. 4. In cases of intracranial hemorrhage, the basal ganglia was most common site of lesion(15 cases). The next common site was cerebral hemisphere (9 cases). 6 patients of all intracranial hemorrhage were combined with intraventricular hemorrhage.Ratio of right and left was 2:3. 5. In patients with motor weakness of hemiparesis, more common findings on CT scan were cerebral infarction. In case with hemiplegia, more common CT findings were intracerbral hemorrhage. 6.Of the 40 cases thought to be cerebral infarction intitially by clinical findings and spinal tap. 8 cases (20.0%)were proved to be cerebral hemorrhage by the CT scan. However, of the 22 cases thought to be cerbral hemorrhage,initially, only two cases (9.0%) were cerebral infarction.

8.Mesenteric cyst: report of case

A mesenteric cyst is considered one of the rarest type of abdominal tumor. We have experienced unusual case of large mesenteric cyst arising from jejunum in a 10-year-old boy. CT disclosed cystic intrabdominal mesenteric mass with attenuated coefficiency +3-+11 Hounsfield units (HU). Pathologically it was confiremed to be benign mesenteric cyst.

10.Diagnostic value of bladder tumors by excretory urography

Bladder tumors initially may be diagnosed by excretory urography. In this study, 60 excretory urogramsincluding 40 cases of biopsy proved blaadder tumor and 20 cases of cystoscopically normal bladder were analyzed.Five experienced readers reviewed five radiographs of each case. The results were as follows: 1. Male to remaleratio was 5.7:1, and the highest incidence of age distribution was between 60 and 69 year with 48%. 2. The tumorswere chiefly located in lateral wall of bladder. (67%) 3. Among 40 cases, pathologic diagnosis was as follows:Transitional cell ca. 39 cases, and squamous cell ca. lcase. 4. The I.V.P. finding showed 82% of normal upperurinary tract, 13% of hydronephrosis, 5% of non-visualization, and 58% of filling defect in bladder. 5. Originalinterpretation of urogram was as follows: Of 40 cases with bladder ca., 45% as positive, 13% as suspicious, and38% as negative. Of 20 cases with normal, 95% as negative, and 5% as positive. 6. Analysis by this study was asfollows: Accuracy 68%, sensitivity 62%, specificity 80%, false positive rate 38%, and false negative rate 20%. 7.25 min A-P radiograph was most valuable projection and oblique projection did not significantly increasesensitivity.
