3.Comparison of Left Ventricular Ejection Times by Various Methods of Measurement with Critical Review of the Methods.

Left ventficular ejection times were measured by four different methods in 200 healthy males and females from the polygraphic tracings including an apexcardiogram, a phonocardiogram and a carotid pulse tracing. The results obtained by each method were compared and the adequacy of each method was critically reviewed. It was felt that the method measuring the left ventricular ejection time from the carotid pulse tracing was the most reasonable. However, there was a significant correlation between the carotid-derived values and those obtained by other methods, thus, regression equations for the relationship of the latter values to the fromer were obtainable.

8.Tuberculosis Cutis Orificialis of the Tongue.

A tender, non-healing ulcer of 3 months' duration developed on the tongue tip of a 51-year-old male with active pulmonary tuberculosis. Acid-fast bacilli were grown in the tissue and sputum cultures. The patient was anergic to PPD skin test before the treatment and IL-2 productivity was significantly decreased. Sections from the tongue tip showed ulceration, infiltration of neutrophils and tuberculoid granulornas accompanying caseation necroses in the dermis. The ulcer healed after administration of anti-tuberculosis medication for 2 months.

9.Implication of Glutamatergic Mechanism for the Behavioral Changes Resulting from Early Maternal Separation during the Development in Juvenile Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Early maternal separation (EMS) during the development has been known to influence the alteration of behavior in adulthood. Nitric oxide (NO) may have been implicated to play a crucial role in the neurodevelopment as an intracellular and intercellular messenger. This study was designed to investigate the neurochemical mechanism of the behavioral changes resulting from EMS during the development in juvenile rats. METHODS: Experimental group consisted of subjects that were removed and weaned from the day on postnatal day 15. Control group were the litters that experienced no EMS until postnatal day 21. On postnatal day 15 and 36, the locomotor activity (LA) was measured. On postnatal day 36 the behavioral changes in the forced swimming test (FST) were also measured. Test drugs were intraperitoneally injected including MK-801 (0.5 mg/kg), N omega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA, 20 mg/kg), paroxetine (20 mg/kg), and bupropion (150 mg/kg). RESULTS:EMS produced the decrease of LA significantly in juvenile rats (p<0.001). Both MK-801 and L-NA increased LA in experimental group (p<0.001) and control group (p<0.05). The degree of increase was higher in experimental group than in control group. However, both paroxetine and bupropion increased LA in experimental group (p<0.001, p<0.05), but not in control group. In the FST, immobility was significantly increased in experimental group compared with control group (p<0.001). The increases of immobility in experimental group were abolished after injecting MK-801, L-NA, paroxetine, and bupropion, respectively. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that EMS during the development can lead to behavioral abnormalities in juvenile rats. The underlying neurochemical mechanism of this behavioral changes may be, in part, related to the glutamatergic NMDA-NO pathway. This suggests that glutamatergic NMDA-NO pathway vulnerable to stress may predispose to depression.

10.Surgical Treatment of Radial Clubhand

Congenital radial clubhand is a rare deformity, which is characterized by total or partial absence of the radial ray of forearm and hand. We experienced 9 radial clubhands in 7 patients during the last 12 years. Excluding 3 clubhands in 2 patients which were very mild in their deformity, 6 clubhands in 5 patients were operated. Radialization was done in 5 clubhands, and centralization in one. Concomitant corrective osteotomy of ulna was combined in all. The results of the surgical treatment were evaluated by ; radiological findings including Hand-forearm angle(HFA), Hand-forearm position(HFP) and Ulnar bowing(UB) range of motion of the wrist ; and parents' satisfaction. Patients were followed up for average 2 years and 6 months, ranging from 1 to 6 years. All the radiological findings were improved. Although their range of wrist motion was not increased, this was changed into more functional position, that is the radial deviation decreased but ulnar deviation increased. Most parents were satisfied with the surgical results.
