Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of 3-dimentional spiral computer tomography (3 D- sCT) in patients with upper urinary tract obstruction. Methods 113 patients with upper urinary tract obstruction were subjected to 3D-sCT. Results The site of urinary tract obstruction and hydronephrosis were distinctly shown in all patients by 3D-sCT. 112 of them were confirmed by ESWL, pathological or operative findings. Conclusions 3D-sCT can exactly show the location, cause and interaction of the upper urinary obstruction, and is especially applied to patients with resultless IVP and unable to retrograde pyelography.

BACKGROUND:Currently, there are a lot of studies addressing oral microflora variation in patients wearing fixed orthodontic appliance. OBJECTIVE:To determine the changes in Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacil us and oral health in teenagers wearing metal orthodontic appliances. METHODS:Twenty-three who were subjected to fixed metal orthodontic appliances as testing group and 18 adolescent volunteers with no oral diseases served as controls. We col ected saliva samples from al the participants immediately, 90 days and 180 days after fixed metal orthodontic treatment to detect changes in Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacil us, which can lead to dental caries, and other oral parameters, including gingival index and oral hygiene index. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:In the control group, there were no difference in Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacil us, gingival index and oral hygiene index at three time points. In the testing group, the hazard levels of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacil us were significantly increased at 90 and 180 days than immediately after fixed metal orthodontic treatment (P<0.05), as wel as the gingival index at 90 days and oral hygiene index at 180 days became worse (P<0.05). At 180 days after fixed metal orthodontic treatment, the hazard levels of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacil us, gingival index and oral hygiene index were severer in the testing group than the control group (P<0.05). These findings indicate that the fixed metal orthodontic appliance could lead to increasing of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacil us, and reduce oral health status badly.

Objective The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency of depression and quality of life(QoL)in lung cancer patients before and after diagnosis , and to investigate the potential related factors. Methods The subjects consisted of 115 consecutive adult patients newly diagnosed for lung cancer in Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital between April 2008 and October 2008. Depression and QoL were evaluated before the diagnosis for baseline; the same evaluation was repeated after surgery. The median interval was 34.6 days (ranged 28-44 days). Patients' biomedical characteristics were noted from patients' medical records, while the demographic factors were obtained during the interview at the out-patients department. Statistical analysis was used to identify the significant predictors. Results The overall incidence of depression before final diagnosis and after surgery was 22.6% and 17.4 %, respectively. No significant change in the prevalence of depression was found in our study. Education, cost of hospitalization, and smoking status were associated with an increased risk of depression before final diagnosis. Age, having confidant, performance status, and type of surgery were found related with postoperative depression. Patients' QoL had a decrease in every subscale after surgery. Changes in role, social functioning scales and fatigue, pain symptom scales were found significantly. In QoL subsc ales, preoperative dyspnea, postoperative role functioning, fatigue , and pain were associated with changes of depression. Conclusion Depression may be present prior to final diagnosis in lung cancer patients and it does not seem to decrease significantly after surgery, indicating the need for psychological screening and appropriate intervention during theperioperative period. A poorer QoL was detected after surgery, which maybe partly contributed to depression symptoms.

Objective To make a preliminary study on self-perception of profile among orthodontic patients. Methods A total of 226 orthodontics patients (79 males and 147 females with average age of 19.3 years) were enrolled in this study. All the patients were treated in the Department of Orthodontics,Sun Yat-sen University Hospital of Stomatology during May to August 2016.Self-perception of profile was investigated in the patients. They were asked whether they had ever noticed their own profile and to choose from among various photos the one that most resembled their own profile. Then profile photos of patients were taken and measured.Differences between self-perception profile and actual profile were compared using paired t test. Results There were 147 patients (41 males and 106 females) answered that they had noticed their own profile.Difference was significant between patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P<0.05).Difference was significant between male patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P <0.05).Difference was not significant between female patients' actual profile and self-perception profile (P > 0.05).Compared with male patients, difference was smaller between female patients' actual profile and self-perception profile. Conclusions Compared with male patients, female patients put more emphasis on their own profile.Patients' self-perception of their own profile is not accurate.Female patients' self-perception of their own profile is more accurate than male patients.

Gingival mesenchymal stem cells(GMSCs)are a population of mesenchymal stem cells found in the lamina propria of gingi-val tissue and can be isolated not only from healthy gingival tissue but also from hyperplastic or even inflamed gingival tissue.GMSCs have become a hot topic of research in oral disease treatment because of their abundant sources, easy availability, unique immunomod-ulatory properties and multi-directional differentiation potential.GMSCs have been used in the treatment of periodontitis, gingival reces-sion,oral cancer, mandibular defects, peripheral nerve injury repair and so on.To prevent and treat oral diseases, this study will re-view the recent progress of research on the application of GMSCs in oral diseases.
