AIM:To improve accuracy of the diagnosis of primary conjunctival masses(PCM) through analyze the clinicopathological characteristics and pathogenic causes of 422 cases of PCM.METHODS:Clinical manifestations, histological characteristics and immunopheno types were reviewed.Relevant literatures were reviewed.RESULTS:Benign conjunctival masses were 403 cases (95.5%).Those included masses from squamous cell papilloma (71 cases, 17.6%), conjunctival cyst (68 cases, 16.9%), inflammatory masses (62 cases, 15.4%), pigmented nevus (60 cases, 14.9%), lipoma (58 cases, 14.4%).Malignant conjunctival neoplasms were 19 cases (4.5%).Those included tumors from B Cell Lymphoma (6 cases,31.6%), melanoma (6 cases,31.6%), and squamous cell carcinoma (5 cases, 26.3%).Different types of primary conjunctival masses were induced by the same cause.CONCLUSION:The pathological types of primary conjunctival masses are various and the majority of which is benign. For the diagnosis of primary conjunctival masses, morphological analysis, immunohistochemical examination shoud be combined to increase the diagnostic accuracy and decrease misdiagnosis rate.

Aim To investigate the effects of isoliquiritigenin(ISL) on cognition dysfunction and brain energy metabolism following repeated cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in mice. Methods Mouse models of learning and memory deficits were made by repeated occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries and reperfusion. Step-down test and Y-maze task were used to examine the learning and memory abilities of mice. The brain energy state was analyzed by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatogra phy. Results ISL 10, 20 and 40 mg?kg -1 ig reduced the n umber of errors and extended the latency of memory in step-down test, decreased the number of cumulated stimulation and increased the number of right choices i n Y-maze task. ISL(10, 20, 40 mg?kg -1) increased the levels of ATP, ener gy charge (EC) and total adenine nucleotides(TAN) in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion The results suggest that ISL improves cognition dysfun ction induced by repeated cerebral ischemia-reperfusion in mice, which may be r elated to the improvement of brain energy metabolism.

Objective To explore the effects of applying microsurgical technique in the one-stage urethroplasty for hypospadias with longitudinal preputial island flaps of dorsum penis. Methods Forty-two hypospadias cases with obvious phallocampsis were reviewed. The patients aged from 1 to 19 years (median, 6.4 years). Among them, 6 cases were of coronary suleus type, 28 cases of pe-nis body type, and 8 cases of penis and scrotum type. All patients went through the operative proce-dures by microscope with four-times magnification and microsurgical instruments. Longitudinal prepu-tial island flaps of dorsum penis was employed for the treatment of 33 cases of these patients, and 9 cases underwent longitudinal preputial island flaps of dorsum penis combined scrotal septal pedicle flaps. Results Thirty-eight cases were cured by one-time surgery (90.5%). One case with urethral fistula after operation was cured by surgical repair of urethral fistula. Two cases with urethral meatus stricture after operation and one with urethral stoma stricture were cured by dilatation. Patients were followed for 9 to 52 months (mean, 27 months). Conclusion Use of microsurgical technique with longitudinal preputial island flaps of dorsum penis in one-stage urethroplasty for hypospadias improved the success rate of surgery with few complications.

Two active compounds were isolated from chinese marine mollusc sea hare (Notarchus leachii cirrosus) by bioassay guided method with conidia of Pyricularia oryzae , and by a combination of extraction and purification with suitable solvent as well as multiple column chromatographies. Their structures were elucidated as (7 E) 1 acetoxy 8 chloro 7 (dichloromethyl) 3 methyoct 7 en 4 one (Ⅰ), (7 Z) 1 acetoxy 8 chloro 7 (dichloromethy l) 3 methyoct 7 en 4 one (Ⅱ). All compounds were obtained for the first time from this specimen and showed significant antineoplastic activities in vitro .

Objective To discuss perioperative rehabilitative care for flexor tendon injuries by examples of successful treatment of 30 cases of rupture of flexor tendon pollicis longus at ZoneⅡ.Methods From March 2001 to March 2006,30 cases of rupture of flexor tendon pollicis longus at ZoneⅡwere treated in our department by suture with double loops and crossing six strands before external fixation.Patients were encouraged to do rehabilitation exer- cises for functional recovery under the guidance and supervision of orthopaedists. Results All the patients were followed up for 6 to 16 weeks (mean,8 weeks).According to TAM (Total Active Motion) criteria,12 cases were rated as excellent,10 cases as good,6 cases as fair, and 2 cases as poor. The excellent to good rate was 73.3%.The 22 excellent and good cases could perform daily-life activities with affected fingers, such as writing, holding chopsticks and doing and undoing buttons. No patient experienced rerupture. Conclusion In perioperative rehabilitative care for rupture of flexor tendon pollicis longus at ZoneⅡ,it is important to have correct diagnosis, noninvasive and secure suture, safe external fixation and functional exercises under the guidance of orthopaedists.
