Result of the present study showed that Anoectochilus roxburghii (Wall. )I,indl. is the genuine speciescurrently used as folk medicine, while A, formosanus Hayata. is a different species with the same name ofJinxianlian. trhe distribution and ecological environment of Jinxianlian were described and an index of eightspecies of Anoectochilus Bl. were listed to distinguish their maln eharacteristic differences.

Objective To compare three kinds of irradiation treatment plans for cervical and upper thoracic esophageal cancer,in order to arrived at proper decision for the patient.Methods From February 2001 to June 2004,43 such patients were studied with three different simulated treatment plans made including conformal plan,conventional four-field plan and conventional two-field plan for every one.All plans were evaluated with iso- dose curve and dose-volume histogram.Results GTV on 95% isodose curve was 99.5%,98.2% and 87.4% in conforaml plan,conventional four-field plan and conventional two-field plan,respectively;PTV_1 and PTV_2 on 95% isodose with 97.8%,97.2%,94.8% and 95.8%,86.6%,73.7%.The volume of＞20 Gy dose of left lung accepted was 18.6%,17.2% and 32.3%,in conformal plan,conventional four-field plan and conventional two-field plan,respectively;the right lung received 20.5%,19.9% and 35.5%.Conclusions Conformal plan is the best in radiotherapy,as it can provide ideal dose distribution of irradiated target with adequate protection of the normal tissues.Conventional four-field plan,being easy to carry out,can replace the conformal plan in most situations.Conventional two-field has the most uneven dose distribution and largest lung volume irradiated.

Objective To investigate whether the combination of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) with hemoperfusion(HP) can improve the clearance rate of middle- and largemolecule uremic toxins so as to improve the quality of life and reduce the mortality in MHD patients. Methods A prospective, randomized and controlled clinical trial was carried out. One hundred MHD patients were selected and then randomly divided into two groups after four weeks of run-in period. HD+HP group received MHD alone 2 times a week and the combined treatment of HD with HP (HD+HP) once a week, whereas HD group received MHD alone 3 times a week. The follow up lasted for mean 2 years. The primary outcome was the death of patients. Secondary end points included clinical data, leptin, high sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), interleukin 6 (IL-6),β2 microglobulin (β2-MG), parathyroid hormone (PTH), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and the indexes of dimensions of Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36Chinese Edition ). Results At the end of the two-year observation, the serum concentration of leptin, hsCRP, PTH, IL-6, β2-MG and TNF-α, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP), heart rate(HR), cardiothoracie ratio, left ventricular mass index (LVMI), EPO dose and the types of antihypertensive drugs used were lower in HD +HP group as compared to HD group (all P＜0.05). HD+HP group had higher hemoglobin (Hb), ejection fraction (EF) and body mass index (BMI) (all P＜0.05). No significant differences between two groups were found in terms of serum albumin (Alb), serum iron (SI), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), cardiac output (CO),Kt/V, early/atrial mitral inflow velocities (E/A) (all P＞0.05). Besides, the SF-36 indicated that the total score of overall dimensions in HD+HP group was higher (P＜0.05) and the quality of life of HD+HP group was evidently better as compared to HD group. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves for the 2-year observation period showed that patients in HD +HP group had obvious survival advantage, while Log-rank test results showed P＜0.05. No serious adverse incidents occurred during the HD+HP treatment. Conclusion HD+HP is superior to HD in eliminating regularly middleand large-molecules uremic toxins and has a potential role in improving the quality of life and survival rate of MHD patients.

OBJECTIVETo introduce exponent curve model methods in the study of the hepatitis B vaccine antibody level.

METHODSAfter the China made vaccine of hepatitis B DNA recombinant yeast derived vaccine (YDV) had been carried out for 5 years, data on the anti-HBsAg's titer were used to construct an exponent curve model. When the vaccination program had been carried out for 8 years, the predicating results of the model were further tested by observed number.

RESULTSThe exponent curve model was Y = 165.67 exp (-0.019X) and the R(2) was 0.98. After 8 years, the practical observed number became 35 mIU/ml, and the predicating result of the model was 27 mIU/ml, 8 mIU/ml lower than the observed number. When the vaccine had been carried out for 12 years, the predicating results of the model became 10.74 mIU/ml, still higher than 10 mIU/ml but was still in the effective range.

CONCLUSIONAn exponent curve model could be constructed, as long as the data of the antibody's titer was in accordance with the tendency of exponent curve. The model could be used to predict the persistence lever of vaccine antibody under certain conditions. The results showed that after 8 years, the predicting results of the model were reliably lower than the observed number.

The cupping spot is considered as one kind of skin change due to cupping treatment. With literature regarding cupping spot, the influencing factors and value of cupping spot in clinical diagnosis and treatment were analyzed, which could make a further exploration on the action mechanism of cupping treatment. The literature showed that the formation of cupping spot was related with cupping temperature, pressure, cup-retaining time, cupping area, individual difference and health condition, etc; cupping spot had the ability to assist diagnosis, prevent disease, cure disease and evaluate clinical efficacy. Previous studies on cupping spot have already made some progress, and played a positive significance on finding cupping rule and studying its mechanism. However, the research for this area is still in the primary stage, which needed deeper study to reveal scientific connotations of cupping spot.

In this paper, Gaussian pixelate Chinese character processing software is designed, and HMD is used to realize the recognition experiment for pixelate Chinese characters based on simulated prosthetic vision. The structure of recognition system, software design and the experiment for determining Gaussian width (sigma) are presented. It is shown that when sigma is 0.235, the recognition program is the best.

In this article, the implementation of eye movement tracking system includes three procedures: hardware acquisition, data extraction and overall analysis. The system is based on Camshift algorithm with an eye tracking module added, developed on VC++ 6.0. The system can track the eye movement effectively in simulated phosphene evaluation experiment based on prosthetic vision.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the feasibility of applying harmonic scalpel in tonsillectomy by comparing it with the conventional tonsillectomy.

METHODSThirty-five patients were treated by harmonic scalpel assisted tonsillectomy (harmonic scalpel group) and 35 patients were treated by conventional tonsillectomy (control group). The operating time and blood loss during operation and the degree of pain and post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage as well as the time of defining were observed.

RESULTSThe data of the operating time and blood loss during operation and the degree of pain in harmonic scalpel group were lower than that in the conventional group, the harmonic scalpel group had less perioperative bleeding (median 1 ml), short operation time (median 20 min), postoperative pain during 5 days with visual analogue scale was lighter (median from 5 scores down to 1 score), there was statistical difference (P < 0.01). Neither primary hemorrhage nor secondary hemorrhage occurred in harmonic scalpel group, while one primary hemorrhage and one secondary hemorrhage occurred in conventional group. No difference was found in the beginning time of defining (P > 0.05).

CONCLUSIONThe application of harmonic scalpel in tonsillectomy was safe, efficient and feasible, which had a nice application prospect in the field of otolaryngology.

BACKGROUND: Chinese herbs have been shown to affect osteoblasts through Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Sclerostin (Sost) is an inhibitor of Wnt signaling pathway and an inhibitor of osteogenesis, and it is also an antagonistic factor that regulates the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts. Bushen Jianpi Huoxue decoction (BJHD) is the empirical formula in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis at the Affiliated Orthopedics Hospital, Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. BJHD can promote osteogenesis and effectively treat osteoporosis. OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of BJHD on the cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity and expression levels of related proteins in Sost-overexpressed adenovirus transfected osteoblasts. METHODS: The osteoblasts were divided into two groups: blank control group (empty adenovirus transfection) and Sost overexpressed group (Sost overexpression and adenovirus transfection). Two groups were cultured with blank serum and medicine serum. The cell proliferation was tested by cell counting kit-8 assay, and alkaline phosphatase activity was tested by alkaline phosphatase kit. Expression levels of bone regulation-related proteins were tested by western blot assay. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Compared with the blank serum, medicine serum could increase the cell viability at 24, 48 and 72 hours in both groups (P ＜ 0.01). Compared with the blank serum, medicine serum increased the alkaline phosphatase activity (P ＜ 0.01). Compared with the blank serum, medicine serum in the blank control group decreased the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5 and osteoprotegerin (P ＜ 0.01), but showed no effect on the expression of osteopontin and tumor necrosis factor α. Medicine serum in the Sost-overexpressed group decreased the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5, osteoprotegerin and osteopontin, increased the expression of tumor necrosis factor α (P ＜ 0.01). These results indicate that BJHD can increase the proliferation of recombinant adenovirus transfected Sost-overexpressed osteoblasts and alkaline phosphatase activity, and regulate the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 5, osteoprotegerin, osteopontin, and tumor necrosis factor α.
