Journal of Preventive Medicine 2024;36(10):865-868
Objective:
To investigate the changing trends in injury mortality among permanent residents in Jingzhou City, Hubei Province from 2017 to 2022, so as to provide the basis for formulating injury intervention measures.
Methods:
Injury death data of permanent residents in Jingzhou City from 2017 to 2022 were collected through the Population Death Information Registration and Management System of Chinese Disease Prevention and Control Information System. The crude mortality of injury was analyzed and the standardized mortality was calculated using the data from the Sixth National Population Census in 2010. The changing trend in injury mortality was analyzed using the annual percent change (APC).
Results:
There were 29 220 injury deaths among permanent residents in Jingzhou City from 2017 to 2022, with a crude mortality rate of 88.61/105. The crude mortality rate of injury was higher in males than in females (101.04/105 vs. 75.97/105, P<0.05). The crude mortality rates of injury in males, females and the whole population all showed upward trends (APC=6.572%, 9.232% and 7.731%, all P<0.05). Males, females and the whole population at the ages of 65 years and above appeared upward trends in crude mortality rates of injury (APC=4.603%, 5.064% and 4.851%, all P<0.05). No significant trends were observed in the crude mortality rate in the residents aged <15 years and 15 to <65 years (both P>0.05). The top five causes of injury death were suicide (25.81/105), falls (24.38/105), motor vehicle traffic accident (17.23/105), drowning (8.61/105), and other unintentional accidents and harmful effects (5.63/105). From 2021 to 2022, falls rose to the first cause of injury mortality.
Conclusions
The crude mortality of injury among permanent residents in Jingzhou City from 2017 to 2022 showed an upward trend. Males and residents aged 65 years and above should be prioritized for intervention measures. Notably, falls have become the top cause of injury from 2021 to 2022.

Background Phlyctenular ophthalmia is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to some microprotein and affected mainly by adolescent in high incidence. Objective This study was to investigate the microscopy findings of phlyctenular ophthalmia and evaluate the histological changes by laser scanning confocal microscope. Methods Twenty-nine eyes suffered from phlyctenular ophthalmia and twenty normal eyes were examined using laser scanning confocal microscope. The pictures were taken by a CCD camera. All the cases had initially chest X-ray,tuberculin test, bacterial and mycobacteria culture. Results Dendritic and inflammatory cells were increased and concentrated in conjunctiva, and epithelial cells were deformed and squamatizated. The capillaries engorged and the goblet cells were injured. The corneoscleral Vogt meshing of the phlyctenular keratitis was obscured and dendritic cells were intruded into the corneas. The corneal epithelium of phlyctenular keratitis was absent and the subepithelial nerve plexus were bended and fractured, and the dendritic and inflammatory cells were intruded.Scarring of corneal stroma was seen under the laser scanning confocal microscope. Conclusions Laser scanning confocal microscopy is valuable for basic research and clinical diagnosis of phlyctenular ophthalmia.

AIM AND METHODSIn the present study, we investigated the TH immunoreactivity and the expression of angiotensin AT1 receptor in locus coeruleus after intracerebroventricular (i. c. v.) injection of carbachol in conscious SD rats with immunohistochemistry. Meanwhile the effects of blocking AT1 receptor were also observed.
RESULTSBoth mean optical density and number of TH and AT1 immunoreactive positive neurons were markedly increased in locus coeruleus after 40 minutes of i.c.v. injection of carbachol (0.5 microg). The enhancement was significantly reduced by i. c. v. injection of losartan.
CONCLUSIONThe results above suggest that i. c. v. injection of cholinergic agonist carbachol can enhance the activity of adrenergic neurons and the expression of AT1 receptor in locus coeruleus. The blockade of AT1 receptor may down regulate the above action induced by carbachol in locus coeruleus.

Objective To explore the role of glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3β/β-catenin signaling pathway on human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) negative factor (Nef) protein promoting of human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) viral interleukin-6 (vIL-6)-induced angiogenesis. Methods GSK-3β mutant plasmid GSK-3β-S9A,dominant negative (DN) form GSK-3β-DN and the control vector pcDNA3.1+ were transfected into endothelial cells which stably expressed HHV-8 vIL-6 or HIV-1 Nef,or co-expressed vIL-6 and Nef protein.Microtubule formation assay was performed to explore microtubule formation ability.A chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model was used to detect angiogenesis. The expression of GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling pathway-related kinases in transfected cells and CAM tissue were further detected by Western blot. The measurement data were compared by t test. Results The activity of GSK-3β was decreased and the ability of HIV-1 Nef protein was enhanced by transfection with GSK-3β-DN in promoting vIL-6 induced microtubule formation (3.42 vs 2.51,t =3.67,P<0.01) and angiogenesis (6.25 vs 3.97,t=4.06,P<0.01).In contrast, the activity of GSK-3β was significantly increased and these functions of HIV-1 Nef protein mentioned above were inhibited by transfection with GSK-3β-S9A (0.62 vs2.51,t=8.48,P<0.01; 0.39 vs 3.97,t=8.59,P<0.01).The results of Western blot showed that with the elevated level of,β-catenin (in cells:3.53 vs 2.07,t=6.60,P<0.05; in tissues:2.76 vs 1.74,t=17.40,P<0.01) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF,in cells:2.68 vs 1.87,t=4.28,P<0.01; in tissues:2.20 vs 1.39,t=7.08,P<0.01) were increased in the GSK-3β-DN transfected cells or tissues, while the opposite results were achieved in the GSK-3β-S9A-transfected cells (GSK-3β phosphorylation:0.50 vs 1.47,t=7.33,P<0.01; β-catenin:1.05 vs 2.62,t=29.50,P<0.01; VEGF:0.74 vs 2.16,t=20.95,P<0.01) or tissues (GSK-3β phosphorylation:0.35 vs 1.97,t=10.72,P<0.01; β-catenin:0.79 vs 1.77,t=5.72,P<0.01; VEGF:0.43 vs 1.65,t=11.89,P< 0.01).Conclusion GSK-3β/β-catenin signaling pathway is involved in vIL-6-induced angiogenesis promoted by HIV-1 Nef protein, which would be valuable for the therapy of Kaposi's sarcoma,an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome,as a potential molecular target.

The leading cause of drug withdrawal from market and clinical trials failure is drug-induced liver injury (DILI). Varying clinical, histological and laboratory features of DILI, as well as undefined underlying mechanisms, hinder patients to be diagnosed in the early-stage of the disease and receive effective treatments. Conventional indicators, like serum transaminases and bilirubin, have inevitable limitations referring to sensitive prediction and specific detection of DILI. In order to reduce the occurrence of DILI, researchers have attempted to discover potential biomarkers with higher specificity and sensitivity from blood and urine in recent years. This article aims to review recent advances in biomarkers of DILI.
