OBJECTIVETo observe the impacts of acupoint catgut embedding therapy and acupuncture-moxibustion therapy on the long-term efficacy and patient's life quality in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.
METHODSSixty-nine patients were randomized into the combined acupuncture-moxibustion and acupoint catgut embedding therapy group (combined therapy group, 36 cases) and an acupuncture-moxibustion group (33 cases). In the acupuncture-moxibustion group, acupuncture was applied at Yingxiang (LI 20), Shangyingxiang (EX-HN 8), Yintang (GV 29), Shangxing (GV 23), Tongtian (BL 7) and Zusanli (ST 36). Moxibustion was applied at Zusanli (ST 36), Feishu (BL 13), Dazhui (GV 14) and Fengmen (BL 12). In the combined therapy group, on the basis of the treatment as acupuncture-moxibustion group, the catgut embedding therapy was applied at Feishu (BL 13), Fengmen (BL 12), Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Zhongwan (CV 12) and Qihai (CV 6). The treatment duration was 4 weeks in the two groups. The clinical efficacy of allergic rhinitis and rhinoconjunctivitis quality of life questionnaire (RQLQ) score were observed before and after treatment as well as in the 4-weeks follow-up after the end of treatment respectively.
RESULTSThe markedly effective rate was 72.7% (24/33) in the combined therapy group and 48.4% (15/31) in the acupuncture-moxibustion group after treatment. The efficacy was similar between the two groups (P > 0.05). It was 57.6% (19/33) in the combined therapy group and was 22. 6% (7/31) in the 4-week follow-up after treatment, indicating the long-term efficacy in the combined therapy group was superior to that in the acupuncture-moxibustion group (P<0. 05). Scores of RQLO after treatment and in 4-week follow-up after treatment in both groups were improved as compared with those before treatment (all P < 0.05). In 4-week follow-up, the improvements in sleep and affection in the combined therapy group were superior to the acupuncture-moxibustion group (3.27 +/- 3.23 vs 4.61 +/- 3.56, 3.48 +/- 3.67 vs 5.81 +/- 4.15, both P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe acupoint catgut embedding therapy combined with acupuncture-moxibustion therapy are safe and effective in the treatment of allergic rhinitis and display the more roles in the long-term efficacy.

Objective To explore the influence of 300 g/kg high protein diet on myelination of the intrauterine grow retardation (IUGR) in the rat brain and their learning and memory ability. Methods The pregnant rats were fed with 60 g/kg low protein diet. After birth, the offspring of IUGR group were fed separately by 300 g/kg high-protein diet (SH group) and 210 g/kg normal-protein diet(SC group).Forty newborn female pups, born from pregnant rats fed by normal-protein diet, were used as the control group(CC group). On the first, the 7th,the 15th and the 218t day,the body weight, brain weight of the offspring and their dynamics expressions of myelin basic protein(MBP) in corpus callosum, internal capsule and external capsule were observed with immunohistochemistry method.Morris water maze test was performed to assess learning and memory ability during the 26th-32ed,then the expression of MBP in the brain was observed. Results On the 21st day,the SH group gained catch-up growth weight, while the brain weight of them was still lower than that of the CC group (P < 0.05),but higher than that of the SC group. At each time point, the MBP expression in corpus callosum, internal capsule and external capsule of SH group and SC group was lower than that of the CC group(all P <0.05),whereas the expression of myelin basic protein in the SH group was higher than that in SC group. The average latencies in all rats were reduced to some degree from the first to the 5th day.On the 5th day, there was no significantly difference between the SH group and CC group (P > 0.05),while the escape latency was significantly shorter in rats of SH group than those of SC group (P < 0.05).As far as search strategy was concerned, there was no difference in SH group and SC group of rats(P > 0.05),but they performed better than those in the SC group on the 5th day(P <0.05).The frequency of passing through the platform quadrant was not significantly difference in rats among the 3 groups (P > 0.05).Conclusions 300 g/kg high-protein diet on IUGR rats can increase brain weight and the expression of MBP,and improve the ability of learning to some extend.

OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical efficiency of curettage combining circumcision on giant condyloma acuminata(CA) in male external genitalia, the relationship between recurrence and curettage depth, the possibility of HPV infection in PBMC after operation.
METHODSCurettage combining circumcision was carried out on 50 cases with CA. The removed wart and wound surface tissues were examined under light microcope and for HPV-DNA detection by PCR. HPV-DNA was detected in PBMC during < or =1 and > or =2 weeks after operation.
RESULTS(1) 46 cases were cured completely after one treating (once the cure rate is 92%), 4 cases twice(twice the cure rate is 8%); (2) The tissues were proved to be HPV-DNA positive by PCR amplification and CA relapse occurred; (3) HPV-DNA was detected in PBMC only within the week after curettage in the 19 cases.
CONCLUSIONS(1) The clinical efficiency of curettage combining circumcision on giant condyloma acuminata in male external genitalia is sure; (2) Cure rate and relapse rate are related with curettage depth; (3) Transient positive HPV-DNA in PBMC may be detected.

Chinese journal of integrative medicine 2008;14(1):71-75
Hyperlipidemia (HLP) is the No.1 risk factor for patients with atherosclerosis (AS) and is directly related to the occurrence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cerebrovascular disease. Therefore, prevention and treatment of AS is of great importance and of practical significance in controlling the incidence and mortality of CAD. With its peculiar syndrome-dependent therapy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has accumulated abundant practical experiences in this field and good clinical effects have been achieved. Chinese herbal medicine, with its particularly unique advantages and high potentials yet to be tapped, displays its huge strength in HLP prevention and treatment. The progress of studies concerning prevention and treatment of HLP by Chinese herbal medicines, in the form of monomers or compound recipes, is reviewed in this paper.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and safety of Xinmailong Injection (XI) in treatment of chronic heart failure (CHF) patients with qi-yang deficiency and blood stasis resistance syndrome (QY-DBSRS).
METHODSTotally 238 CHF patients with QYDBSRS were assigned to the treatment group (118 cases) and the control group (120 cases) by randomized, double-blind, placebo parallel controlled method. Patients in the treatment group received routine therapy and XI (100 mg/2 mL, by dripping at 5 mg/kg, twice per day for 5 consecutive days), while those in the control group received routine therapy and XI mimetic agent (100 mg/2 mL, by dripping at 5 mg/kg, twice per day for 5 consecutive days). The heart function classification of New York Heart Association (NYHA), 6-min walking distance, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), scores for Chinese medical symptoms were observed before and after treatment, and safety assessed.
RESULTSTotally 235 patients actually entered full analysis set (FAS), including 120 cases in the control group and 115 cases in the treatment group. The total effective rate of heart function, 6-min walking distance and increased post-pre-treatment distance in the experimental group were superior to those of the control group with statistical difference (all P < 0.05). Compared with the control group, increased value of post-pre-treatment LVEF, the total effective rate of Chinese medical syndrome efficacy, scores for Chinese medical symptoms and decreased post-pre-treatment value of Chinese medical syndrome scores were obviously improved (all P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the incidence of adverse events between the two groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSXI could improve the heart function of CHF patients, improve Chinese medical symptoms, elevate exercise tolerance, and improve LVEF. It had no obvious toxic and side effects.
