Objective To compare the changes in serum levels of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)and uric acid(UA)before and after atorvastatin treatment for the patients with both essential hypertension and hypercholesterolemia,and to evaluate its effects on blood pressure and left ventricular remodeling.Methods One hundred and twenty-six hypertensive patients complicated with hypercholesterolemia were randomized into group A with amlodipine 10 mg/d(n = 65)and group B with amlodipine 10 mg/d plus atorvastatin 20 mg/d(n = 61),for three months continuously.Serum levels of total cholesterol(TC),low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-C),high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C),triglyeerides(TG),hs-CRP and UA,as well as blood pressure,were determined for both groups before and after treatment.Left ventricular posterior wall thickness(LPWT)and interventricular septum thickness(IVST)were measured by echocardiography and left ventricle mass index(LVMI)was calculated.Results Serum levels of TC,LDL-C,HDL-C,TG,hs-CRP and UA decreased significantly in gr6up B after three-month treatment with atorvastatin,while serum level of HDL-C increased significantly. OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical efficiency of curettage combining circumcision on giant condyloma acuminata(CA) in male external genitalia, the relationship between recurrence and curettage depth, the possibility of HPV infection in PBMC after operation.

METHODSCurettage combining circumcision was carried out on 50 cases with CA. The removed wart and wound surface tissues were examined under light microcope and for HPV-DNA detection by PCR. HPV-DNA was detected in PBMC during < or =1 and > or =2 weeks after operation.

RESULTS(1) 46 cases were cured completely after one treating (once the cure rate is 92%), 4 cases twice(twice the cure rate is 8%); (2) The tissues were proved to be HPV-DNA positive by PCR amplification and CA relapse occurred; (3) HPV-DNA was detected in PBMC only within the week after curettage in the 19 cases.

CONCLUSIONS(1) The clinical efficiency of curettage combining circumcision on giant condyloma acuminata in male external genitalia is sure; (2) Cure rate and relapse rate are related with curettage depth; (3) Transient positive HPV-DNA in PBMC may be detected.

Objective To provide scientific basis for improving and establishing relevant regimes through understanding the status of cognition and prevention of occupational hazard among Shenzhen city community nursing staff.Methods Using random sampling method,215 nursing staff of 83 community rehabilitation centers in six administrative areas of Shenzhen city were investigated by questionnaires.Results Occupational protection consciousness and protection behavior of Shenzhen City community nursing staff was comparatively ideal,64.0％ of nurses were passing grate and 36％ were failing.Conclusions Community nursing staff should be given the continuous and calculated trainings about the relevant knowledge and should pay attention to the renewal of knowledge.

OBJECTIVETo explore the potential of iodized linoleic acid (ILA) and its 5-fluoro-deoxyuridine ester (IFU) to inhibit hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells in vitro and tumors in vivo.

METHODSILA and its constituent component IFU were chemically synthesized, purified, and confirmed by 1H-NMR. The HCC cell lines, QGY-7703 (5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treatment sensitive) and SMMC-7721 (5-FU resistant), were treated with ILA, IFU, 5-FU, or traditional lipiodol for 72 hours. Survival rates of the treated cells were assessed by the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium method, and used to calculate the IC50 and IC90. In addition, thirty nude mice were subcutaneously inoculated with SMMC-7721 cells and randomly divided two weeks later into four treatment groups (n = 6 each) for intra-tumoral injection of ILA, IFU, 5-FU, lipiodol or DMSO (controls). The rate of tumor inhibition (RTI) was calculated for each group at week 4 after treatment.

RESULTSFor the cultured SMMC-7721 cells, the inhibitory concentrations for ILA, IFU, and 5-FU were: IC50: 134.38 mumol/L, 17.55 mumol/L, and 7.38 mumol/L; IC90: 192.88 mumol/L, 97.63 mumol/L, and more than 200 mumol/L. For the cultured QGY-7703 cells, the inhibitory concentrations for ILA, IFU, and 5-FU were: IC50: 109.55 mumol/L, 44.79 mumol/L, and 98.06 mumol/L; IC90: all, more than 200 mumol/L. In both cell types, the IC50 of lipiodol was more than 400 mumol/L. Compared with the RTI of the control mice (100%), the RTI of ILA-treated mice was 31.9% (t = 2.37, P less than 0.05), of IFU-treated mice was 56.9% (t = 4.91, P less than 0.01), and of 5-FU-treated mice was 31.0% (t = 2.59, P less than 0.05). The RTI of IFU was significantly stronger than that of either ILA or 5-FU (P less than 0.05). The lipiodol treatment showed no inhibition effect on tumors (P more than 0.05).

CONCLUSIONILA and IFU can effectively inhibit the growth of HCC cells in vitro and tumors in vivo. Furthermore, IFU outperforms ILA in inhibiting HCC growth.

Objective To explore the problems of microsurgical treatment of multiple intracranial aneurysms with regard to the indications,surgical timing,operative approaches and the prevention of complications, and improve their diagnoses and treatments. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the data of 33 patients with multiple intracranial aneurysms admitted to our hospital from Jan.2000 to Dec.2008 and their clinical manifestations,imaging features and microsurgical treatments were summarized. Results In the 33 cases of multiple intracranial aneurysms,the male-to-female sex ratio was 1:1.75 and the average age at onset of symptoms was 56.52.Twenty-four patients showed good postoperative prognosis(Glasgow Outcome Scale IV-V) with 2 deaths.Conclusion Individual treatment should be adopted in the treatment of differently localized multiple intracranial aneurysms with different sizes and clinical classifications,and the utilization of temporary blockade and ultrasound during the operation can improve the therapeutic effects and reduce the postoperative complication rates.

AIMTo investigate human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) protein expression and gene amplification in Chinese metastatic prostate cancer patients and their potential value as prognostic factors.

METHODSImmunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to investigate HER2 protein expression in prostate biopsy specimens from 104 Chinese metastatic prostate cancer patients. After 3-11 months of hormonal therapy, 12 patients underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). HER2 protein expression of TURP specimens was compared with that of the original biopsy specimens. Of these, 10 biopsy and 4 TURP specimens with HER2 IHC staining scores >or=2+ were investigated for HER2 gene amplification status by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH).

RESULTSOf the 104 prostate biopsy specimens, HER2 protein expression was 0, 1+, 2+ and 3+ in 49 (47.1%), 45 (43.3%), 8 (7.7%) and 2 (1.9%) cases, respectively. There was a significant association between HER2 expression and Gleason score (P = 0.026). HER2 protein expression of prostate cancer tissues increased in 33.3% of patients after hormonal therapy. None of the 14 specimens with HER2 IHC scores >or= 2+ showed HER2 gene amplification. Patients with HER2 scores >or= 2+ had a significantly higher chance of dying from prostate cancer than those with HER2 scores of 0 (P = 0.004) and 1+ (P = 0.034). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that HER2 protein expression intensity was an independent predictor of cancer-related death (P = 0.039).

CONCLUSIONAn HER2 IHC score >or= 2+ should be defined as HER2 protein overexpression in prostate cancer. Overexpression of HER2 protein in cancer tissue might suggest an increased risk of dying from prostate cancer. HER2 protein expression increases in some individual patients after hormonal therapy.

BACKGROUNDHelical tomotherapy (HT) is a new image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) technique. It is reported that HT plan for non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can give better dose uniformity, dose gradients, and protection for the lung than IMRT plan. We compared the dosimetric characteristics of HT for NSCLC with those of conventional IMRT to observe the superiority of HT.

METHODSThere was a comparative case series comprising 10 patients with NSCLC. Computed tomographic (CT) images of delineated targets were transferred to the PrecisePlan planning system (IMRT) and Tomo planning system (HT). The prescription doses were 70 Gy/33F for the gross tumor volume (GTV) and the visible lymph nodes (GTVnd), and 60 Gy/33F for the clinical target volume (CTV) and the clinical target volume of the visible lymph nodes (CTVnd). The dose restrictions for organs at risk were as follows: the maximum dose to spinal cord ≤ 45 Gy, V20 to the total lungs < 30%, V50 to the heart < 50%, and V55 to the esophagus < 50%. Both plans were evaluated by means of the dose coverage of the targets, dose-volume histograms (DVHs), and other dosimetric indices.

RESULTSThe dose coverage, conformity, and homogeneity of the targets' volumes were found to be satisfactory in both plans, but the homogeneity of the HT plan was better than that of IMRT. The high-dose radiation volume (V20-V30) to the lung and the mean lung dose (MLD) decreased (P < 0.05), but the low-dose radiation volume (V5-V10) increased slightly in the HT plan (P > 0.05). The maximum doses to the spinal cord, heart, esophagus and trachea in the HT plan were lower than those in the IMRT plan, but the differences were not statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONSThe HT plan provids better dose uniformity, dose gradients, and protection for the organs at risk. It can reduce the high-dose radiation volume for lung and the MLD, but may deliver a larger lung volume of low-dose radiation.

Aim To investigate the protective effects of supercritical CO2 fluid extract(SFE)of Notoginseng a-gainst glutamate-induced PC12 cells damage and the underlying mechanism. Methods PC12 cells were dealt with glutamate to establish cell models. MTT as-say,LDH method,Hoschst 33342 staining,Fluo-3 /AM fluorescence staining and Western blot were used to observe the changes of cell viability,intracellular Ca2 + concentration and the expression of protein that interacted with C kinase l(PICK1)and glutamate re-ceptors 2 (GluR2),respectively. Results Glutamate was cytotoxic to PC12 cells with an inhibitory concen-tration 50(IC 50 )of 25 mmol·L - 1 . Pretreatment with SFE(25,50,100 mg·L-1)and FSC231(100 μmol ·L-1 )and SFE(100 mg·L-1 )+FSC231(100μmol ·L-1 )remarkablely improved cell viability,reduced LDH leakage,decreased apoptosis rate,debased intra-cellular calcium concentration,decreased the expres-sion of PICK1 ,and increased the expression of GluR2 . Conclusions SFE of Notoginseng shows protective effects against glutamate-induced PC12 cell damage, and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of PICK1 and the increase of GluR2 protein expression.

OBJECTIVETo observe the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor-lalpha subunit (HIF-1alpha), HIF prolyl hydroxylase domain-containing protein(PHDs) and factor inhibiting HIF-1(FIH) in pulmonary arteries of patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

METHODSPulmonary specimens were obtained from patients undergoing lobectomy for lung cancer, 12 had concurrent COPD (COPD group) and 14 without COPD (control group). The ratio of vascular wall area to total vascular area (WA%) and pulmonary artery media thickness (PAMT) was observed, and HIF-1alpha and its hydroxylases(PHD1, PHD2, PHD3, FIH) mRNA and protein were detected by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry respectively.

RESULTSWA% and PAMT of COPD patients(50 microm +/- 9 microm, 40% +/- 5%, were statistically different from those of the control subjects (39 microm +/- 6 microm, 31% +/- 4%, P < 0.01). Relative quantification of mRNA and protein levels (absorbance, A) showed that HIF-lalpha mRNA and protein levels in COPD group (0.230 +/- 0.036,0.275 +/- 0.039) were statistically higher than those of the control subjects (0.174 +/- 0.029, 0.102 +/- 0.015, P < 0.01 ), and that the protein level increased more markedly. PHD1 mRNA in COPD subjects (0.180 +/- 0.030) was comparable to that in control group (0.191 +/- 0.029, P > 0.05); PHD2 and PHD3 mRNA levels in COPD (0.245 +/- 0.044, 0.252 +/- 0.023) were significantly higher than those in control group(0.182 +/- 0.028, 0.127 +/- 0.017, P < 0.01). On the other hand, in COPD subjects PHD1 protein (0.104 +/- 0.015) was significantly lower(P < 0.01), whereas PHD2 protein (0.274 +/- 0.044) was significantly higher(P < 0.01) than those in control group(0.209 +/- 0.023, 0.219+/- 0.043). As for PHD3 protein, no significant changes were observed between the two groups (0.161+/- 0.023 in COPD, 0.146 +/- 0.021 in control, P > 0.05). FIH mRNA and protein both showed no differences between the two groups. Linear correlation analysis showed that HIF1alpha protein was positively correlated with WA%, PAMT, PHD2 mRNA and protein, PHD3 mRNA, and that HIF1alpha protein was negatively correlated with PHD1 protein.

CONCLUSIONPHDs may be involved in the process of hypoxic pulmonary vascular remodeling in COPD via regulation of HIF-1alpha gene expression
