Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber Syndrome*

A 12-year-old girl presented with a 1-week duration of hair loss associated with splitting of the hair ends and whitish dots on the occipital hairs. On microscopic examination, a longitudinal splitting of the hair shaft with reconstitution of the normal hair distal to the fracture, nodular swellings, with the appearance of broomsticks pushed into one another, at the site of whitish swellings, and the flattening and twisting of the hair shaft around the long axis were demonstrated. Minor trauma to injury-prone hair is a common cause of hair shaft defects, however the reports with the combined conditions are insufficient in the literature. We describe a patient with central trichoptilosis associated with localized trichorrhexis nodosa and pili torti.

Nine-month-old female infant was seen with a 7-month history of a nodule on the right temporal scalp, which had gradually increased in size. Stroking of the lesion resulted in urtication and blistering and there were no other cutaneous lesions. The histology showed subepidermal bulla formation and a dense infiltration of mast cells in the papillary and reticular dermis. We present an infant with solitary mastocytoma on the scalp, a rare site.

Purpose of this study was to investigate the biomechanical fates of the partial thickness tear of the rotator cuff in rabbit, and try to provide guideline of treatment for the partial thickness tear of the rotator cuff tendon. Infraspinatus tendons of fifty rabbits were used for study. The rabbits were divided into three groups, twenty for one-third resection(superficial partial resection group), twenty for two-thirds resection(deep partial resection group) and ten for control group. Extraarticular portion of the infraspinatus tendons of the rabbits were resected partially with one-third or two-thirds thickness for each experimental group. We sacrificed five rabbits of each experimental group at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after the resections, and five rabbits for the control group at 6 and 12 weeks. Average maximal load per area of the infraspinatus tendons was measured by tension test. There was significant difference between the deep partial resection group, 5.3 and 6.3 N/emat 6 and 12 weeks respectively, and the control group, 13.2 N/mm(P<0.05). There was no difference between the control and superficial partial resection group, 12.8 and 14.1 N/mm at 6 and 12 weeks, respectively. Shallow partial tears might be healed spontaneously. Deep partial tears would not be healed naturally. When surgical treatment is indicated for deep partial tears of the rotator cuff, tendon repair, rather than debridement, would provide more predictable results.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study were to describe the level of activities of daily living (ADLs) and fatigue of stroke patients and to identify related factors of ADLs and fatigue. METHOD: A sample of 132 were used who were recovering from stroke. The face-to-face interviews were conducted to collect data. The levels of ADLs and fatigue were evaluated using the Modified Barthel Index and Kim's fatigue scale respectively. A series of t-test and analysis of variance analyses were conducted to examine study purposes using SPSS 15.0. RESULTS: The levels of fatigue and ADLs were 65.6 (SD=16.52) and 74.6 (SD=22.32) respectively. Significantly poorer ADLs were found: women (t=2.05, p=.001), older people aged > or = 70 years (F=2.74, p=.046), the duration of onset (F=4.32, p=.006), the use of assist devices (F=35.64, p<.001), the parts of paralysis (F=4.25, p=.007), the time to attack (F=3.34, p=.039), and accompanying symptoms (F=15.23, p<.001). There was a significant difference in fatigue with patients with lower accompanying symptoms having lower fatigue (F=11.08, p<.001). CONCLUSION: These findings suggest gender, the duration from onset, the use of assist device, the parts of paralysis, the time to attack and accompanying symptoms were significant factors of the ADLs and fatigue post stroke. These factors should be considered when developing and testing nursing intervention programs for stroke survivors.

Use of non-selective drugs to kill cancer cells means that healthy cells will inevitably be damaged and many patients will suffer severe side-effects. New therapies are continuously being sought to reduce the mortality from cancer. The targeted cancer therapy has been developed with advances in molecular biology and technology. Over the last several decades, a wealth of knowledge has emerged regarding the molecular events involved in human cancer. Understanding the molecular events in tumorigenesis and mechanism would provide knowledge in searching for novel targets.Through our understanding of signaling pathways regulating cellular growth, cell cycle, and apoptosis, numerous targets for anticancer agents have emerged. The targets usually include EGFR, transmembrane protein tyrosine kinase, protein kinase C, farnesyl transferase, angiogenesis, and metalloproteinase. It has become clear that targeted therapy is the important novel strategy for treatment of cancer through preclinical clinical trials.
