The extent of brain damage is known to be an essential predictive factor in the clinical course of patient with severe head injury. The purpose of the work was to study the usefulness of brain type creatine kinase(CK-BB) as a iochemical index of brain injury. We performed a Tri-check isoenzyme electrophoresis to determine the serum level of CK-BB in 123 patients with head injury. CK-BB isoenzyme was detected in the serum in 24 out of 123 patients with acute brain injury(19.5%). The peak of CK-BB activity ranged from 2 to 85IU/1 and mean value was 21.40+/-21.66IU/1. The activity was higher in patients with diffuse axonal injury, intracerebral hematoma and subdural hematoma than any other cases. The serum CK-BB isoenzyme was more frequently detected in low GCS score cases at admission and these patients had poor outcome than high GCS score cases. High CK-BB activity in serum was associated with poor prognosis, but a low CK-BB activity in serum was not necessarily a good prognostic sign. The presence of the serum CK-BB isoenzyme correlated with admission GCS score and with the ultimate outcome. We conclude that CK-BB level in serum is a reliable marker of cerebral parenchymal injury and may enhance the predictive value of the Glasgow coma scale score when used in conjunction with this indicant.

The authors analyzed ultrasonographically the total 45 cases of thyroid disease verified by historicaldiagnosis, functional diagnosis, and morphological diagnosis at the Departement of Radiology, Busan NationalUniversity hospital from June to Sept. 1982. The resuls obtained were as follows; 1. In the sex distributionfemale was 38 cases (84.4%), and male 7 cases (15.6%). 2. Among the total 4 cases thyroid adenoma was 24 cases(53.3%), nodular hyperplasia 8 cases (17.7%), thyroid carcinoma 7 cases (15.6%), diffuse hyperplasia 3 cases(6.7%), Hanshimoto's thyroiditis 1 cases (2.2%), subacute thyroiditis 1 cases(2.2%), tuberculous thyroiditis 1cases(2.2%) in orders. 3. On ultrasonogram, total 24 cases of thyroid adenoma showed a single nodule in 24 cases(100.0%), smooth outer margin in 23 cases (95.8%), capsular echo in 23 cases (95.8%), pure cystic nodule in 4cases (16.7%), and increased echogenicity in 17 cases (85.0%) among the 20 cases excluded the pure cystic nodules.4. Total 7 cases of thyroid carcinoma showed no capsular echo in 4 cases (57.1%), irregular outer margine in 4cases(57.1%), no pure cytic nodule in all cases, and enlargement of metastatic lymphnode in 4 cases (57.1%). 5.Total 8 cases of nodular hyperplasia showed enlargement of thyroid gland and multiple nodule in 8 cases (100.0%),and increased echogenicity in 7 cases (87.5%). 6. Total 3 cases of diffuse hyperplasia showed enlargement ofthyroid gland and increased echogenicity in 3 cases (100.0%). 7. Total 3 cases of thyroiditis showed decreasedechogenicity in 3 cases (100.0%) and enlargement of thyroid gland in 2 cases (66.7%). 8. The cold area visualizedon radionuclide scan could be differentiated from a solid mass and cystic one by utrasonogram.

We investigated the stress-induced changes in the lipid and hormonal concentrations in plasma, including cytochrome P450 (CYP)-derived oxidative stress in the liver, and the anti-stresseffect of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) water extract in mice. Stress induction using restraint increased the levels of corticosterone (CORT), glucose, total cholesterol (TC), and low-den-sity lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) while decreasing in the levels of insulin and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), compared with those of unstressed mice. Restraint-stress also increased the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plasma by 5.4-fold. More-over, the stress resulted in a 2.8-fold higher production of C-reactive protein (CRP) than the control group. In addition, the catalytic activities of CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 in the liver micro-somes were stimulated by 5.5- and 3.8-fold, respectively, and concomitant ROS formation was elevated by 4.3-fold in the liver extract, compared to the normal group. In contrast, the KRG treatment (5, 20, or 50 mg/kg/day) to stress-exposed 3 groups alleviated the increased CORT, TC, LDL-C, ROS, and CRP levels and restored the decreased insulin concentrations.The enhanced each ROS in the plasma and liver, and the CYP enzyme activities were also attenuated in KRG-treated mice in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, these results suggest that KRG ameliorates stress-induced detrimental effects on the plasma and liver of treated mice.
