We report herein a case of bullous pemphigoid(BP) associated with Graves' disease(GD) The patient was 43-year-old female who had suffered frorn GD for 8 years. She had annular, erythematous atrophic plaques with a margin of small vesicles on the frontal and temporal areas, Histopathologic findings of the skin lesion showed subepiderrnal bulla, and numerous eosinophilic infiltrate in the bulla cavity and dermis. Direct immunofluorescent study of perilesional skin revealed linear IgG deposition at the dermo epidermal junction. We think our case shows a higher than chance association of BP and GD because both are basecl on autoimmune mechanism.

We report a case of hidradenoma papilliferum of the left nipple in a 23-year-old female patient. Hidradenoma papilliferum occurs only in women, usually on the labia majora or in the perineal or perineal region and represents an adenoma with apocrine dif ferentiation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of chronic deprivation of estradiol on the serotonin level in Sprague-Dawley rat's cerebral cortex and hippocampus. METHODS: One hundred of female Sprague-Dawley rats were taken care for seven to eight weeks, then they were randomly assigned into two group; fifty rats underwent bilateral oophorectomy & the remaining rats were the control group. Six months after oophorectomy, brain tissue was extracted from cerebral cortex and hippocampus and then homogenated: this was done in the both groups. The upper layer of the homogenated substance was taken and frozen and finally dried up. The next process was marking with PITC, quantification through HPLC and comparing with authentic serotonin. Protein quantity was measured by using Bradford method. RESULTS: Comparison between the bilateral oophorectomy group and the control group for serotonin content in the cerebral cortex was 134.2+/-14.3 nmol/mg protein(mean+/-SEM) and 122.5+/-11.6 nmol/mg protein in each group. As for the serotonin content in the hippocampus was 148.8+/-13.9 nmol/mg protein and 132.9+/-13.7 nmol/mg protein in each group. It shows that, there was no significant difference in the serotonin level, in the two areas mentioned above. CONCLUSION: The effect of estradiol on the serotonin level may be dependent on the hormonal change duration. Chronic effect of hypoestrogenism might have no effect on tryptophan hydroxylase and monoamine oxidase, thus not changin the serotonin level. These data supported the previous findings that chronic hypoestrogenism had no effect on serotonin level.

A clinical review was done on 343 infants and children diagnosed and operated at the Department of Pediatric Surgery in Keimyung University, Dong San Medical Center for congenital gastrointestinal anomalies from January, 1988 to December, 1991. The results are summarized as follows; The most prevalent age group of congenital gastrointestinal anomaly was within first week after birth, and infants within 3months occupied 70% of total, and male to female ratio was 2:1. 2) The moat common lesion of congenital gastrointestinal anomalies was stomach with 87cases (25.4%), followed by anus with 80 cases (23.3%), colon with 63 cases (18.4%) and biliary tract with 38 cases(11.1%). 3) The most common congenital anomaly was congenital hypertophic pyloric stenosis with 87 cases (25.4%), followed by imperforate anus with 70 cases (20.4%), congenital megacolon with 63 cases (18.4%), and prevalent age was 2 week-3month, first week after birth, 1month-3year. 4) The incidence of common congenital gastrointestinal anomalies were mostly higher in male than in female but choledochal cyst was higher in female than in male. 5) Associated anomalies were observed in 14 cases (4%) of total cases, duodenal atresia was seen the highest rate of the associated anomalies and the most common associated anomaly was annular pancreas, followed by Down syndrome, congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

This study was carried out to investigate the ultrastructural findings of rats after administration of 0.5% lead acetate with drinking water. The Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into control and experimental groups. The control group was composed of 12 rats and was orally administered with 0.5% sodium acetate. The experimental group was composed of 36 rats and orally administered with 0.5% lead acetate. Two rats in the control group and four rats in the experimental group were sacrificed on day 2, and week 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8 after administration. The kidney was extirpated and examined by electron microscopy. The results obtained were as follows: The blood lead concentration in the experimental group began to increase from the second day after administration and it increased gradually until the 6th week and it decreased at the 8 week. The urinary excretion of delta-ALA also increased from the secondary and gradually increased up to the 8th week. On electron microscopic examination, the proximal tubular cells showed fat droplets, dilatation of the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial swelling, increased numbers of secondary lysosomes and myelin figure-like residual bodies and intranuclear inclusion bodies. All these findings peaked at the eighth week after administration. Ultrastructural findings after Timm sulphide silver reaction revealed the lead granules in the proximal tubular lumen and between the microvilli of the proximal tubular cells without membrane-bounded. It can be concluded that most of the changes of micro-organelles are compatible with degenerative changes of lead exposure and passive diffusion of lead granules are involved in the proximal tubular cells.
