For the purpose of ascertaining the status of physical growth and health status of the University students, a intensive survey was conducted by the authors towards a total of 2,638(male; 2,228, female;410) who passed the written entrance examination at the Seoul National University. The items included the measurements on physical growth, various physical indexes, visual acuity, tuberculosis and dental status. The findings and results can be summarized as follows : 1. Physical Growth. No signigicant difference was found in the physical growth between classes(literature and science) and by ages. In males, the means of body height, body weight, chest-girth and sitting height were 168.0+/-5.07cm, 55.7+/-5.71kg, 85.8+/-4.4cm and 91.5+/-2.21cm, respectively. In females, these were 157.4+/-4.57cm, 00.4+/-5.75kg, 80.3+/-4.51cm and 86.1+/-3.30cm, respectively. Basing on the above measurements several physical indexes were calculated as follows ; Relative body weigh 33.15 in males and 32.02 in females. Relative chest-girth 51.07 and 51.01, relative sitting-height 54.46 and 54.70 Rohrer index 1.00 and 1.02, Kaup index 1.97 and 2.04, Vervaeck index 83.63 and 83.03, and Pelidisi index 89.94 and 92.45. 2. Visual Acuity. Among the students of science classes those of 0.8 and below in vision on left and right occupied 46.4% and 45.0%, those of 0.6 and below 39.1% and 41.2%, respectively. Among the students of literature classes those of 0.8 and below occupied 46.3% and 42.9%, and those of 0.6 and below occupied 41.4% and 39.0, respectively. In males those of 0.8 and below occupied 46.8% and 44.5% and 0.6 and below occupied 41.9% and 39.7%, while in females 0.8 and below occupied 43.9%, and 42.4%, and 0.6 and below occupied 38.3%% and 37.3%, respectively. In males those of 0.8 and below in corrected vision occupied 12.1% and 10.3%, while in females 12.9% and 12.2%, respectively. More students of abnormal vision were found among science classes and the proportions of corrected vision were 38.9% and 37.4% in males, and 33.9% and 33.2% in females, respectively. 3. Tuberculosis. Among the total, 55 students were diagnosed as tuberculosis, of whom 50 were minimal cases, 2 were moderately advanced cases and 3 were far advanced cases. 4. Dental Status. Among the total, 81.2% were of decayed teeth, 20.8% filled, 9.5% missed, 5.0% extraction needed, 9.1% sunplatinum bridges, 3.3% golden bridges and 5.5% golden inaly. Regarding tartar on teeth moderate, heavy and light grades occupied 49.5%, 29.7% and 20.3%, respectively and 0.8% had none. 5. Comprehensive evaluation. According to the criteria 4 grades were applied to comprehensive evaluation as follows : A---excellent in physical status B---with some physical defects but no difficulties in study C---need treatment D---need treatment and rest. Out of the total, A grade occupied 21.6%, B 76.2% and C. and D 2. 2.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether longitudinal changes in positive and negative symptoms affect cognitive functioning in chronic schizophrenia. METHODS: Sixty-eight patients diagnosed with DSM-IV schizophrenia were examined on two occasions over 6 months for symptoms and cognitive changes. Symptoms were measured by PANSS. Cognitive functions were examined for sustained attention, executive function, concentration and attention, and verbal memory and learning using Degraded Stimulus Continuous Performance Test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Digit Span, and Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, respectively. Twenty control subjects were assessed to compare the cognitive scores of remitted schizophrenic patients. RESULTS: Patients showed significant improvement in symptoms and all cognitive tests after 6 months treatments. Significant improvements in positive and negative symptoms did not predict improvements in any aspect of cognitive functioning measured. Normal controls performed significantly better than remitted schizophrenic patients on all cognitive tests. The results show no relationship between change in symptoms and change in cognition in chronic schizophrenia. CONCLUSION: We suggest that symptomatic and cognitive impairment may be a distinct construct. These findings highlight the importance of treating cognitive impairment in addition to the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia.

This study presents data on the externally received doses for radiation workers who used the Korea Radioisotope Association's personal monitoring and dose record keeping service from 1984. Distributions of annual dose by age of worker and occupational category were given. The number of radiation workers registered was 23,257 in 1997. The trend of the number of radiation workers and their annual doses increased since 1984. The measured radiation dose were generally low. The collective annual dose and the mean annual dose were 33.45 Sv and 1.44 mSv, respectively. Very few workers(0.5%) exceeded 20 mSv(2 rem) and only 1 exceeded 50 mSv, the legal limit for dose.

Objectives: This study investigated causative strains and their antibiotic sensitivity in patients who were hospitalized for maxillofacial odontogenic infections at a tertiary center in South Korea over the past 10 years with the aim of providing guidelines for the selection of appropriate empirical antibiotics. Materials and Methods: Patients with head and neck fascial space abscesses due to odontogenic infections who underwent incision and drainage surgery with pus culture tests between 2013 and 2022 at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dankook University Hospital were included. The bacterial isolates and antibiotic sensitivity of each strain were analyzed for 2013-2022, 2013-2017, and 2018-2022. The affected fascial spaces were classified into primary, secondary, and deep neck spaces. Results: In the 192 patients included in this study, 302 strains were detected. Viridans streptococcus had the highest frequency (51.7%), followed by Prevotella spp. (16.9%), Staphylococcus spp. (5.6%), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (4.6%). The identification rate of viridans streptococcus significantly increased from 41.8% in 2013-2017 to 60.9% in 2018-2022. Viridans streptococcus showed an antibiotic sensitivity of 80.5% to ampicillin; the sensitivity to penicillin antibiotics decreased over the study period. Antibiotic susceptibility was approximately 94% for third-generation cephalosporins.K. pneumoniae, which was identified at a high percentage in patients with deep neck space infection, showed increasing antibiotic resistance to most antibiotics over the study period. Conclusion Viridans streptococcus was identified in head and neck fascial space abscesses with the highest frequency. Empirical antibiotics should be effective against this strain; penicillin antibiotics are considered inappropriate. For effective treatment of deep neck space abscesses, bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity tests performed as soon as possible are essential.

Total hip arthroplasty for ankylosed hip has a higher risk of failure due to the poor condition of the hip abductors and the altered configuration of the bone, which lead to poor positioning or fixation of the prosthesis. Fifty-one hips (42 patients) converted to total hip arthroplasty between March 1983 and March 1994 have been reviewed three to thirteen years six months after operation. The average period of follow-up was four years nine months. Twenty six of the patients were men and sixteen were women. The average age at the time of operation was 40 years old (range,19 to 70 years). Among the 51 hips, bony ankylosis were 27 hips and fibrous ankylosis were 24 hips, spontaneous ankylosis were 40 hips and surgical ankylosis were 11 hips. The duration of hip fusion was 13 years six months in the bony ankylosis and 16 years one month in the fibrous ankylosis. Preoperatively 33 cases had low back pain, ipsilateral or contralateral knee or hip pain. In asymptomatic 18 cases, conversion total hip arthroplasty was also performed for the management of functional disabilities due to severe malpositioned ankylosis. At the time of the last follow-up, 25 cases were free from pain and six patients had a mild degree pain on the hip, knee or thigh. In bony ankylosis, the postoperative average hip motion ranged from 1.1 degrees to 93.2 degrees (average arc of motion of 92.1 degrees). In fibrous ankylosis, the postoperative average hip motion ranged from 1.7 degrees to 96.6 degrees (average arc of motion of 94.9 degrees). The average Harris hip score was improved from 66 to 86.9 in bony ankylosis and from 49 to 89.5 in fibrous anklyosis. The postoperative leg length discrepancy was 1.1 cm in average. The postoperative complications included heterotropic ossification in 25 cases (49%), cup loosening in two cases (3.9%) and stem loosening in three cases (5.6%). As for the clinical results, 24 cases (89%) of bony ankylosis and 23 cases (96%) of fibrous ankylosis had satisfactory functional results at the last follow-up. In conclusion, the conversion total hip arthroplasty could provide functional improvement, pain relief and especially correction of leg length discrepancy in most cases of ankylosed hip.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To introduce the endoscopic posterior lacrimal sac approach in dacryocystorhinostomy with its success rate and complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Posterior sac approach was performed on 10 patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction from March, 1996 to May, 1997. To compare the accessibility to the lacrimal sac of anterior and posterior approach, bone thickness was measured in the anterior and posterior portion of the maxillary line on computed tomography of paranasal sinuses. Microvascular density (MVD) of the anterior ethmoid sinus mucosa and lateral nasal wall mucosa was measured to compare the degree of intraoperative mucosal bleeding. RESULTS: There was no intraoperative complications, and this technique led to complete relief of lacrimal obstruction in 9 patients (90%) with a follow up of 13 to 30 months. Bone thickness was significantly thinner in the posterior portion of the maxillary line (p<0.001). MVD was higher in the ethmoid sinus mucosa than in the lateral nasal wall mucosa, but it was not significant statistically (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Posterior lacrimal sac approach has many advantages such as better assessibility to the sac, saving the operation time, and high success rate. Therefore, attempted by those who are experienced in endoscopic techniques, posterior lacrimal sac approach appears to be useful procedure in the surgical treatment of nasolacrimal duct obstruction.
