The firat caae of hemangioma originating in the skeletal muscle was reported by Linton in 1843. Hemangiama involving the skeletal muscle ia less common and the correct preoperative diagnosis is often not made even tbough they attain considerable size. These tumors have remained asymptamatic and undetected by their hosta. We experienced 5 cases of hemangiama in the skeletal muscle for 2 years since 1979 and the diagnosis were confirmed clinicopathologically.

PURPOSE: Pseudohypoparathyroidism(PHP) is caused by a defect of G protein and receptor despite of normal parathyroid hormone(PTH) secretion. It is a rare disorder characterized by hypocalcemia, hyperphophatemia, elevated PTH levels and albright hereditory osteodystrophy(AHO). We retrospectively reviewed the clinical characteristics of PHP. METHODS: We reviewed clinical features, laboratory findings, and outcome to treatment of 8 PHP patients, diagnosed at Seoul National University Hospital from 1988 to rool. RESULTS: Male to Female ratio was 1.7:1 and mean age at diagnosis was 11.8 years old. The initial average height SDS was 0.13+/-.08 and the average weight SDS was 0.43+/-.31. The most common symptom was seizure. Only one patient had typical AHO, three patients had mental retardation. Brain MRI or CT showed basal ganglia calcification in 3 patients. All patients treated with vitamin D and calcium supplementation could maintained normal serum levels of calcium and phophorus. CONCLUSION: PHP should be suspected in patient with seizure of unknown origin, aged above 5 year-old. AHO and mental retardation could be adjuvant signs to the diagnosis of PHP. But definite diagnosis could be made by laboratory work up.

Cnical analysis of pyogenic hip in children was made on 18 patients, who had been admitted in the dept. of orthopedic surgery, Seoul Red Cross Hospital from Jan. 1972 to Dec. 1976. The following results were obtained: 1. The incidence of the pyogenic hip was slightly higher in male than female as 11 versus 7 and it was higher in the age group of 5~7 years and 11~13 years. 2. The most of the etiological microorganism was coagulase positive stap hylococcus aureus. 3. Penicillin was resistant to staphylococcus aureus in about 75% of cases, and orbenin and Lincocin were most sensitive in 58.2% of cases. 4. All cases treated with arthrotomy and irigation or drainage, but prognosis was different by method of surgical approach and method of treatment. 5 In reference with progoosis early hospitalization, early diagnosis and early treatment were counted to be imperative as known.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome consist of a complex of symptoms affecting the foot and is thought to be due to a compression neuropathy of the posterior tibial nerve within the fibro-osseous tunnel that lies beneath the flexor retinaculum on the medial side of the ankle. A case of tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by neurilemoma of the posterior tibial nerve was treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul Red Cross Hospital. The patient had complained of pain and paresthesia on the plantar aspect of the left foot for one and half years before admission. Pain and paresthesia were almost completely improved after removal of the mass by intraneural lysis.

We report two cases of supratentorial gangliocytomas mimicking an extra-axial tumor. MR imaging indicated that the tumors were extra-axial, and meningiomas were thus initially diagnosed. Relative to gray matter, the tumors were hypointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. On contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images, homogeneous enhancement was observed, while CT scanning revealed calcification in one of the two cases.

Cervical plexus block has been evaluated clinically for surgery of the anterior neck in 13 patients during the 10 months(from July 1981 to April 1982) at the Department of Anesthesiology in Capital Armed Forces General Hospital. We have assessed CPB for technique, onset, anesthetized area, duration, complication and supplimentary agents, and reviewed the anatomical aspects of cervical plexus. The distribution of injected local anesthetics was demonstrated under radiography using Urographin. We experienced incomplete block in 9 cases which needed substitution with Thalamonal. The incidence of complications was few and most significant complication seen in this study was respiratory difficulty. However, There was no evidence for phrenic nerve paralysis. Cervical plexus block was performed safely and effectively for surgery of the anterior neck.

Neurenteric cyst is very rare congenital disease and usually presents symptoms in adulthood. It can cause major neurological deficits if detection and treatment are delayed. It is also known to be a source of serious infection of the central nervous system. Neurenteric cyst is usually located in the ventral aspect of the lower cervical or upper thoracic spinal cord. Intracranial neurenteric cyst is very uncommon and less than 35 cases have been reported in the literature. We report MRI findings of two cases of intracranial neurenteric cyst and review the literature.

PURPOSE: We performed this study to assess pain in patients seen in member outpatient orthopaedic clinics of the Korean Knee Society (KKS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We organized a committee for the study of knee joint pain. The committee designed a questionnaire form consisting of 11 items related to pain. One hundred thirty-five regular members of the KKS asked all patients visiting their respective outpatient clinics during May 2007 to complete the questionnaire form. Although 12,418 patients agreed to fill out the questionnaire form, we only analyzed the questionnaire forms of 9,578 patients who answered completely. RESULTS: 1. Approximately 85% of patients visiting outpatient orthopaedic clinics complained of pain. 2. The average degree of pain was more than moderate, and 72% of patients simply desired to be free of pain. 3. Seventeen percent of patients thought their physicians underestimated their pain. 4. Regarding agreement in the assessment of pain between physicians and patients, there was low level of agreement by numeric rating scale, but a high level of agreement based on a mild/moderate/severe grading scale. 5. Approximately one-third (36.2%) of patients had used additional treatments for pain relief on top of their prescribed medications. CONCLUSION: Eighty-five percent of patients complained of pain, and two-thirds of them were primarily focused on its relief in their visit to the outpatient clinic. Hence, we should heed pain management itself as an important goal in treating orthopaedic patients.
