BACKGROUND: Disinfection is essential for the prevention of hospital infoction. Tego-51, one of the amphoteric surfactants based on the dodecyl-di( aminoethyl)-glycine, has been considered as an effctive disinfectant having a broad specturn of antimicrobial activity. We evaluated the disinfective activity of Tego-51 against several clinical isolates of bacteria and yeasts including Helicobacter pyiori. METHODS: Twenty three strains of vacteria including H. pylori, and a strain of yeast were exposed to the various concentrations (0.05%, 0.01%, 0.005%) of Tego-51 for the various periods (0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16min). After the exposure to Tego-51 disinfectant, 0.01 mL of mixture of microorfanisms and Tego-51 was inoculated into brain-heart infusion broth, into Sabouraud dextrose agar. or Wilkins-Chalgren agar with 10% sheep blood, and incubated at 37 degrees C for 48 hours or in the Campy Pouch microaerophilic system. RESULTS: Most strains were killed within 30 seconds after an exposure to 0.01% of Tego-51, but Proteus mirabilis was eradicated after two minutes of exposure. At the concentration of 0.005 % concentration. P. mirabilis and Bacillus subtilis were killed after eight minutes od exposure. H. pylori was killed with 0.005% Tego-51within 30 seconds. Conslusions: This study showed that Tego-51disinfectant was effective for the disinfection of commonly isolated bacteria and yeast from hospital. It may be recommended that Tego-51 should be used at concentration greater than 0.1% for the effective disinfection of skin, instruments and hospital floors.

STUDY DESIGN: We analysed the pre-vertebral soft tissue measurements in cervical spine trauma patients. OBJECTIVES: We tried to determine the sensitivity and specificity of soft tissue measurements in patients with radiographically proven cervical spine fracture and to investigate the diagnostic value of the measurements. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: Widening of the pre-vertebral soft tissue is a well recognized sign in injury of the cervical spine. But the diagnostic value of this widening is still controversial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Width of the prevertebral soft tissue on lateral cervical spine radiographs was measured for 52 patients with a history of cervical spine trauma and for 53 patients complaining of cervical discomfort without a history of trauma. As a normal Korean adult standard, 7mm at C2 level, 8mm at C3 level, and 16mm at C6 level were considered the upper limit. Width of the prevertebral soft tissue was measured as a distance between antero-inferior margin of the body of cervical spine and the most posterior border of the larynx and trachea. RESULTS: A C2 prevertebral soft tissue measurement of more than 7mm had a sensitivity of 35% and a specificity of 86%. A C3 measurement of more than 8mm had a sensitivity of 35% and a specificity of 72%. A C6 measurement of more than 16mm had a sensitivity of 30% and a specificity of 80%. CONCLUSIONS: The prevertebral soft tissue measurement seems to be of limited diagnostic value. Further study may be required to determine more acceptable limits of normal cervical spine measurement in Korean population.

We examined a male infant with transient increase in alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity. The 25-month-old infant was admitted to a local hospital because of pneumonia of unknown etiology. Initial laboratory investigation revealed a serum ALP of 11,260U/L, which was comparable to that of bone isoenzyme on the electrophoresis pattern, There was no evidence of hepatitis, skeletal or intestinal diseases. The hyperphosphatasemia disappeared 3 months later. We report a case of transient hyperphosphatasemia diagnosed inci- dentally in the course of management of pneumonia. BACKGROUND: Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) have recently attracted much attention because of claims that their frequency within nuclei is significantly higher in malignant cells than in normal, reactive, or benign neoplastic cells. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper is to analyze a method allowing selection of the best morphometric criterion for quantifying AgNOR proteins under conventional observation conditions by light microscopy. METHOD: We tried to investigate the various parameters including NORs counting in cutaneous tumors using image analysis system. RESULTS: There were significant differences in mean nucleus area per a AgNOR, nucleus area between the benign and potentially malignant group. But the conventional counting of AgNORs is not able to differentiate between the two groups. We could discriminate squamous cell carcinoma from Bowen's disease using parameters of mean ratio of AgNORs area per nucleus area, mean ratio of greatest AgNORs area per nucleus area, coefficient of variation (C V) of nucleus area, and mean area of largest AgNORs. In squamous cell carcinoma and keratoacanthoma, C V of nucleus area has shown a significant difference. CONCLUSION: Study of AgNORs using image analysis system is a useful tool for the diagnosis of cutaneous tumors.
