This study investigated the degree of knowledge achievement and self-confidence in aseptic technique as a part of the fundamental nursing practice classes. The subjects were 220 nursing students in a junior college in Chonnam and an applied Quasi -experimental research methodology was used thirty of them comprised an experimental group to examine learning according to the teaching method. Wata were collected over 80 days, from April to June 1988, analyzed using descriptive statistics, percentages, means, t-test, one way ANOVA Pearson's correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with the SAS program. The conclusions are as follows. 1. The mean score of the degree of knowledge achievement of aseptic technique of the 220 students was 0.68(possible score 1.0) before the lecture but was 0.88 after lecture(p=.000). 2. The mean score for aseptic technique of the 220 students was 3.41(possible score 5.0) before practice but was 4.27 after practice(p=.000). 3. The correlation of self-confidence before and after practice was relatively low(r=.25, p=.000). 4. The mean score of the degree of knows edge achievement of aseptic technique in the experimental group(selected 30 students) was 0.72 before the lecture but was 0.90 after the lecture. 5. The mean score of self-confidence on aseptic technique in the experimental group(selected 30 students) was 3.18 before practice but was 4.32 after practice (p=.000). 6. The mean score of learning according to the type of teaching to aseptic technique for the experimental group(selected 30 students) was 23.2(possible score 34) after lecture and presentation, was 27.3 after learning through video tape, was 31.7 after presentation through practice, was 33.7 after first practical training, and was 34 after secondary practical training. As a result of this study, learning methods in the education of fundamental nursing skill effective for knowledge achievement and competence in practicing skill.

BACKGROUND: Injectable biomaterials have attracted increasing attention for volume restoration and tissue regeneration. The main aim of this review is to discuss the current status of the injectable biomaterials for correction of tissue defects in plastic and reconstructive surgery. METHODS: Requirements of injectable biomaterials, mechanism of in situ gelation, characteristics, and the combinational usage of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and growth factors were reviewed. RESULTS: The ideal injectable biomaterials should be biocompatible, non-toxic, easy to use, and cost-effective. Additionally, it should possess adequate mechanical properties and stability. In situ gelation method includes physical, chemical, enzymatic and photo-initiated methods. Natural and synthetic biomaterials carry their pros and cons due to their inherent properties. The combined use of ADSCs and growth factors provides enhanced potential for adipose tissue regeneration. CONCLUSION: The usage of injectable biomaterials has been increasing for the tissue restoration and regeneration. The future of incorporating ADSCs and growth factors into the injectable biomaterials is promising.

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive, reusable device that is being used routinely in anesthesia procedure for monitoring oxygen saturation. This is a very beneficial device that can quickly detect of hypoxia, the most common cause of anesthesia-related death. However, in clinical uses, false desaturation readings are frequently found to be caused by various factors. Such as by the use of intraoperative blue dye, which can falsely decrease oxygen saturation as determined by pulse oximetry. We therefore report our findings concerning prolonged decreased pulse oximetry readings due to the intraoperative use of blue dye subcutaneously.

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid antibodies(APA) including anticardiolipin antibodies(ACA) are significantly associated with ulcerations of the leg. Moreover, resistance to activated protein C(aPC) may be an important risk factor in leg ulcerations. Until now, there has been no clinical investigation about the positivity of APA or resistance to aPC in patients with leg ulcers in Korea. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the positivity to APA and the presence of resistance to aPC in patients with leg ulcers in Korea. METHODS: Venous or arterial ultrasonic Doppler, semiquantitative assay for serum APA and functional analysis for aPC resistance were conducted in 32 patients with leg ulcers. RESULTS: 1. Of the 32 patients with leg ulcers, 34,3% had a positive APA. APA were more frequently associated with venous ulcerations of the leg than in subjects with leg ulcers of arterial or mixed origin. 2. aPC resistance based upon the functional analysis, occurred in 43.7% to 46.8% of leg ulcer patients. 3. Livedo reticularis (38.1%) and superficial thrombophlebitis (19.0%) were the most common cutaneous manifestations accompanied by leg ulcers in 21 APA-positive and/or aPC resistant patients. Deep vein thrombosis of extremities was the most common complication (47.6%) among the systemic thrombotic sequelaes in APA-positive and/or aPC resistant patients. CONCLUSION: APA positivity and aPC resistance may be relatively common anticoagulant defects among patients with leg ulcerations in Korea. APA positivity and aPC resistance should be considered important risk factors for the development of not only leg ulcers but also systemic thrornbotic complications.

Thie study was conducted in the Anesthesiology Department of Chosun University Hospital from March to August 1987 using 0.5% isobaric bupivacaine and 0.4% hyperbaric bupivacaine as agents for spinal anesthesia. The following results were obtained. 1) The segmental heights and the highest level of sensory loss were significantly increased with increased dosage. In the hyperbaric bupivacaine groups of 15 mg and 20 mg respectively, the sensory lose in comparison with isobaric groups was significantly increased. 2) Less time was needed to achieve, complete motor blockade in the 15 mg hyperbaric bupivacaine group than in the isobaric groups but there were no significant differences between the other groups. The duration of motor blockade was more prolonged in the isdobaric bypivacaine groups using 15mg And 20 mg than in the hyperbaric groups. 3) The Group using 20 mg of hyperbaric bupivacaine demonstrated a significant decrease in blood pressure as coupared wish the group using 20 mg of isobaric bupivacaine. 4) Following spinal anesthesia, headache developed in 5 cases (5.6%). From the above results we conluded that isobaric bupivacaine and hyperbaric bupivacaine are appropriate anesthesia agents for surgery on the lower abdomen and lower extremities.

Bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2)-conjugated three-dimensional (3-D)-printed poly (L-lactic acid)(PLLA) scaffold is likely promising as an effective bone substitute for enhancing bone regeneration of massive bone defects caused by tumor resection, traumatic injury, or congenital diseases. The authors developed a new bone substitute using a novel strategy composed of 3-D-printed PLLA scaffolds through a sequential coating of catechol-conjugated alginate (C-AL), BMP-2, and collagen (CO). The 3-D-printed PLLA scaffold was successfully obtained with 5 mm of diameter, 1 mm of thickness, 400 lm of pore size, 187–230 lm of grid thickness, and 82% of porosity. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of the BMP-2-immobilized PLLA scaffold in MC3T3-E1 and W-20-17 cells was more increased than BMP-2 itself due to the controlled release of BMP-2 from the scaffold. Tenfold new bone formation for the BMP-2-immobilized PLLA scaffold was obtained by micro-CT analysis than PLLA scaffold without BMP-2 weeks after 4 weeks of transplantation model mouse. Further another big animal model study should be performed before clinical trials.
