5.Synovial Chondromatosis of the First Metatarsophalangeal Joint: A Case Report.
Journal of Korean Foot and Ankle Society 2007;11(1):107-110
Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon non-neoplastic condition of the joints, forming multiple cartilaginous nodules in the synovium. The lesion usually tends to involve large joints, and the occurrence in the small joint of foot is very rare. We would like to report a case of synovial chondromatosis which was confused with Freiberg infarction in the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint of the foot.

Journal of the Korean Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons 2009;35(5):310-311
Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon disease of cartilage transformation of synovial membrane with formation of loose bodies within the joint space. The involvement of temporomandibular joint is very rare. Symtoms include swelling, pain, stiffness of the jaw, and inability to close the jaw. A case involving the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) and non-symptoms is presented.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1988;23(1):313-317
A typical synovial osteochondromstosis within the both knee joints occured in a 29-year-old man. The patient complained of palpable masses in the both knee joints showed multiple round, oval, amorphous calcified loose bodies. Arthrotomy of the left knee joint, removal of loose bodies and total synovectomy were performed. The microscopic findings of loose body revesled a degenerated cartilage cap and showed ares of cacification, ossification and fibroadipose tissue in the central part of the body. The mocroscopic findings of synovium revesled a cartilagenous metaplasis of the fibro vascular tassue and showed no evidence of calcification or ossification. The cartilagenous tissue was relatively matured form.

Journal of the Korean Association of Maxillofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons 2010;32(3):270-275
synovial chondromatosis is most frequently found in the knee, they have been reported in temporomandibular joint. Synovial chondromatosis is a cartilaginous metaplasia of the mesenchymal remnants of the synovial tissue of the joint. It is characterized by the formation of cartilaginous nodules (loose bodies) in the synovium and within the articular space. Pain and swelling are the most common symptoms of the synovial chondromatosis and somtimes deviation of the mandible toward the unafected side during motion may occur. When these lesions becom symptomatic, they should be removed surgically.]]>

Synovial chondromatosis is an uncommon lesion, which is characterized by cartilaginous and osseous metaplasia of the joint synovium. Synovial chondromatosis usually involves a large joint and rarely occurs in the hand. Intra-articular synovial chondromatosis during the hand should be considered in the differential diagnosis of swollen, stiff or painful joints. Other possible diagnoses include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, trauma and chronic infection. Moreover, if enchondral ossification of loose bodies is not seen a diagnosis of synovial chondromatosis can not be made preoperatively. Intra-articular synovial chondromatosis is a benign condition and surgical synovectomy remains the most effective treatment. The authors report a case of synovial chondromatosis of the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint.
