1.Comparisons of Anthropometric Measurements, Body Fat, Blood Parameters, and Nutrients Intakes in Over- and Desirable-Body Weight School Children.

This study was carried out to compare the characteristics of the over weight elementary school students with those of desirable-weight children. Anthropometric parameters such as height, weight, BMI, body fat percentile, triceps skin fold thickness were measured. Dietary assessment and blood analysis were performed. The average ages of over weight children and desirable-weight children were 10.9+/-2.5 and 10.2+/-2.8 years, respectively. The means body fat percentile of over weight children and desirable-weight children were 27.5+/-3.7% and 20.2+/-3.8%. respectively. Plasma levels of TG, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol of over weight children and desirable-weight children were 179.3+/-30.0, 104.9+/-26.6, 52.3+/-6.7 and 178.3+/-84.1 mg/dl, and those of desirable-weight children were 86.1+/-43.5, 183.7+/-16.5, 101.0+/-2.1 and 67.7+/-20.0 mg/dl, respectively. Plasma TG levels of over weight children were significantly higher than those of desirable weight children. On the other hand, plasma HDL-cholesterol levels of over weight children were significantly lower than those of desirable-weight children. Plasma levels of GOT and GPT were in normal range in both group however, GPT level of over weight children was higher than that of desirable weight children. Plasma levels of albumin, globulin, and BUN were all in normal range and no differences were found in both groups. Hematologic data did not show any difference between two groups except WBC, RBC and Hgb levels which were significantly higher in over weight group than those of desirable-weight children. Daily nutrients intake of over weight children and desirable-weight children were very similar and they were around the Korean RDA levels for each nutrients. However the intake of calcium of both groups were little over 50% of RDA. The consumption of dietary fiber was very low and the cholesterol intake was very high showing that the habitual meals of Korean school children were not well balanced.

2.A Study on the Serum Lipid Level In Hypertensive Patients.

The plasma cholesterol, TG,LDG,HDL of 101 Korean hypertensive patients were measured to compare with plasma cholesterol, TG,LDL,HDL level of healthy people(control group). The plasma cholesterol level in hypertensive patients was 189.6+/-39.5mg% and was 188.7+/-33.7mg% in healthy people(P>0.5). The plasma TG level in hypertensive patients was 200.5+/-154.2mg% and was 116.1+/-32.4mg% in healthy people(P<0.05). The plasma HDL level in hypertensive patients was 44.6+/-15.5mg% and was 45.1+/-9.8mg% in healthy people(P>0.05). The plasma LDL level in hypertensive patients was 119.0+/-68.6mg% and was 98.1+/-53.4mg% in healthy people(P>0.05). The serum level of the total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol in the hypertensive patients group were not significantly different from the control group, but the serum level of the TG was significantly increased in the patients group. We thought that this difference of plasma TG level is due to exogenous TG in hypertensive patient group but further evalution in properties of TG is required.

3.Hypolipidemic Effects and Safety of Lovastatin in Patients with Primary Hypercholesterolemia.

To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lovastatin, new hypolipidemic agent of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, we administered lovastatin 40mg to 80mg once daily for 12 weeks in 20 patients(7 males, 13 females) with primary hypercholesterolemia, and observed the sequential chamges of the lipid profile every 4 weeks. The results are as follows ; 1) The seurm total cholesterol was reduced significantly by 31% from 321+/-36mg% to 210+/-26mg%(p<0.05). 2) The serum triglycerides was significantly reduced from 321+/-168mg% to 228+/-74mg% by 29%(p<0.05). 3) The low density lipoprotein cholesterol was reduced significantly from 177+/-36mg% to 120+/-22mg% by 32%(p<0.05). 4) The total lipid, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol were also reduced significantly. 5) The ratio between total cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol did not change after lovastatin therapy. 6) There was no adverse reaction due to lovastatin therapy during 12 weeks of therapy. These results suggested that lovastatin is a effective and safe now hypolipidemic agent and is a convenient HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor for clinical use.

4.Effect and mechanism of Tongmai Tang in atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE:
To study the changes of reactive oxygen species(ROS), and the effect of Tongmai Tang on ROS.
METHODS:
Forty rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups: a normal control group,a model group, a low dosage Tongmai Tang, and a high dosage Tongmai Tang administration group (n=10).The normal control group was fed with common food twice daily. The model group was fed with high cholesterol diet. The low dosage Tongmai Tang administration group was fed with high cholesterol diet as in the model group, together with Tongmai Tang at a lower dosage. The high dosage Tongmai Tang administration group was fed with high cholesterol diet as in the model group, together with Tongmai Tang at a higher dosage. After 16 weeks, the concentration of serum malondialdehyde (MDA),superoxide dismutase(SOD), and serum lipid were detected.
RESULTS:
In the model group, the concentration of serum SOD was significantly lower, while levels of serum MDA,CHO, and LDL were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.01). In the low dosage Tongmai Tang administration group, the concentration of serum CHO and LDL significantly decreased (P<0.05). In the high dosage Tongmai Tang administration group, the concentration of serum SOD significantly increased (P<0.05), whereas the level of serum MDA, CHO and LDL significantly decreased (P<0.01). MDA was positively correlated with serum CHO, LDL (r= 0.397 and 0.443, P<0.05), and SOD was negatively correlated with serum CHO, LDL(r= -0.407 and -0.429, P<0.01).
CONCLUSION
Tongmai Tang can decrease the concentration of serum CHO and LDL, and increase the level of SOD. Tongmai Tang may have antioxidation in atherosclerosis.

6.Protective effect of bushen ningxin recipe on ovariectomized rabbits with atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVETo study the effects of Bushen Ningxin recipe (BNR) on atherosclerosis in ovariectomized rabbits.
METHODSTwenty-six female New Zealand white rabbits of three months old were randomly divided into four groups, the normal group, the sham operation group, the control group (ovariectomized) and the treated group (ovariectomized and treated with BNR). All rabbits, except the normal group, were fed with high-cholesterol diet starting from two weeks after operation, and to the treated group BNR was given additionally for 3 months. Levels of blood lipid (TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C) and NO were measured at the end of the 12th week, and at the same time, histomorphological and pathological examination of aorta under light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and the ratio of atherosclerotic area of lesion/endothelium ratio (AL/AE) and thickness of endothelium/medium ratio (TE/TM) were estimated using image analyzer.
RESULTSNo significant difference was found in levels of blood lipid between groups, except those in the normal group. As compared with the control group, in the treated group, level of serum NO was higher, AL/AE and TE/TM were lower and the pathological changes of aorta was milder.
CONCLUSIONBNR could inhibit the atherosclerosis formation in ovariectomized rabbits, it showed protection on vascular endothelial cells.

7.Effect of niacin on adiponectin levels in the adipocytes secretion in rabbits.

OBJECTIVE:
To explore the effect of niacin on the serum adiponectin concentration in hypercholesterolemia rabbit and the adiponectin concentration secreted by adipocytes in normal rabbits.
METHODS:
Ten male New Zealand white rabbits fed with high cholesterol diet for 8 weeks were randomly divided into 2 groups: (1) The high cholesterol group maintained a high cholesterol diet for 8 weeks. (2) The same cholesterol diet plus niacin (0.4g/kg*d ) were administrated for 6 weeks in the niacin group. A control group was fed with normal diet for 14 weeks. Subcutaneous adipose from the control group was collected for adipocyte culture. Matured adipocytes were incubated with various concentrations of niacin (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0micromol/L). Adiponectin concentrations in the serum and adipocyte culture supernatant were measured by enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assay.
RESULTS:
Compared with the control group, rabbits in the high cholesterol group showed higher serum levels of total cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), all of which were significantly reduced by niacin treatment (P<0.01),and serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) significantly increased (P<0.01). At 8th week, the mean adiponectin concentration of rabbits fed with high cholesterol diet was significantly lower than that of the control group[(1.268+/-0.039)mg/L vs.(1.449+/-0.107)mg/L,P<0.01]. Niacin treatment significantly elevated the serum adiponectin level which was positively related to HDL-C,and negatively related to TC and LDL-C. Cell experiment in vitro indicated that niacin could significantly induce the adiponectin secretion of adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner.
CONCLUSION
Niacin can significantly promote the adiponectin secretion of adipocytes, suggesting that niacin probably has an ability of elevating the serum adiponectin level in addition to lipid-lowering effect.

8.Dietary calcium decreases plasma cholesterol level only in female but not in male hamster fed a high cholesterol diet.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of dietary calcium on plasma lipoprotein profile in castrated and ovariectomized hamsters.
METHODSMale, castrated, female and ovariectomized hamsters (n=36 each group) were randomly divided into three sub-groups (n=12) and fed one of the three diets containing 0, 2, and 8 g calcium per kg diet for a period of six weeks. Changes in plasma lipoprotein profile were monitored at the end of week 0, 3 and 6.
RESULTSPlasma total cholesterol (TC), non-high density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), triacylglycerols (TG) and TC/HDL-C were decreased only in intact female and ovariectomized hamsters. In contrast, three levels of dietary calcium had no effect on lipoprotein profiles in both intact male and castrated hamsters.
CONCLUSIONBeneficial modification of lipoprotein profile by dietary calcium was gender-dependent at least in hamsters.
