Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):111-113
A proposal is presented to improve the original complicated control of the exposure parameters in the direct radiography system (DR). The interface circuitry of the high-voltage generator is redesigned using RS-232 serial COM port. The data and signals are transmitted between the personal computer and the high-voltage generator in the serial mode. A program package is designed to realize the control of the exposure parameters of the high-voltage generator in DR on the PC machine. Experiment results have shown that the proposed console operates steadily and it is capable of providing a more convenient operation console for the direct radiography system.

2.Texture features' extraction of B-scan schistosomial fibrosis images using the Peleg method.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):109-193
In this paper, the Peleg Method is used to calculate the fractal dimension of 5 normal images and 5 schistosomial fibrosis images in order to extract the texture features of B-Scan liver images based on a fractal model. The result indicates that this fractal dimension could be an effective parameter to distinguish the pathologic changes of the disease.

Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):102-105
Content-based medical image retrieval has become a hot research topic due to the rapid increase of image database. In this paper, we present a method of medical images retrieval, based on texture analysis with Haar wavelet transform. Meanwhile, its effectiveness is compared with the method of retrieval based on co-occurrence matrix. A prototype system is implemented and the experiments show that the method has a much better effect.

5.Multi-target extraction algorithm based on edge restriction and attraction field regularization.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):97-116
The topologically-adaptable model is an effective method for the contour detection of multiple objects on an image. However, it meets many problems when we apply it to MR brain images, such as poor convergence to boundary concavities, resulting from the broken boundary, and miserable anti-noise ability. In this paper, we proposes a new algorithm, named multi-target extraction algorithm based on edge restriction and attraction field regularization, to overcome these shortcomings. This new algorithm uses prior knowledge about target to perform edge restriction to get the only edge of the object of interest and to regularize attraction field to enlarge attraction field. Results show that the new algorithm can extract the target contour quickly and accurately when we apply it in MR brain images.

7.A research on direct 3-D reconstruction algorithm used in cardiac CT scanning.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):90-93
The data-sampling speed of cone-beam CT is faster than that of fan-beam CT, so the cardiac image will be more and more perfect in cone-beam CT with the improvement of the reconstruction algorithm. A new scanning framework of double cone-beam, which has improved FDK algorithm is presented, and a method of 3-D cardiac image reconstruction based on the new scanning framework is designed resulting in a better cardiac image quality.

8.An approach to adaptive stereo brain image's segmentation.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):88-87
This paper presents a new method for automatically segmenting brain parenchyma and cerebrospinal fluid in routine single-echo MR images. This method is based on the coupled Markov models. They can model intensity measurement at each voxel site to implement piecewise smoothness constraint, and at the same time, model discontinuities to control the interaction between each pair of the neighboring voxel. The method is to derive the maximum a posteriori estimate of the regions and the boundaries by using Bayesian inference and neighborhood constraints based on Markov random fields (MRFs) models. This method has the following desirable properties: (1) the brain image can be well classified into white matter, grey matter and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and (2) it has a better robustness to noise and intensity inhomogeneity.

9.Applications of tree-shaped structure in DICOM based on XML.
Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(2):83-87
In order to improve the sharing of DICOM, a proposal is offered to introduce XML into DICOM on the SPIE 2005 and in this way, better readability and expansibility of DICOM files have been achieved. On this basis, the DICOM data structure is improved further by replacing the one-dimension linear data structure with multilayer tree-shaped data structure. And thus the nesting and dependence relationships between information object and data elements are much clearer and it is more convenient and easy to browse DICOM image files.
