1.A Study of the Relationship between the Child-rearing Attitudes and the Maternal Role Strain in Mothers with Infants.

PURPOSE: The main purpose of this study was to identify the correlation between the child rearing attitudes and the maternal role strain of mother with infants. METHOD: This study is designed as a descriptive research study and the data was collected from 82 mothers and infants by means of an interview and questionnaire in a period from July 2002 to December 2002, when they came to screen their infant's growth and developmental state at a public health center. RESULT: The results of this study were as follows : There was a significant positive correlation between the child rearing attitudes and maternal role strain(r.= .53, p= .000). There was a significant difference between the father's employment state and child rearing attitude of mothers(t.=5.22, p<.000). There was a significant difference between male infant and female infants in maternal role strain(t.=3.8, p=0.04). CONCLUSION: When the child rearing attitude was positive, the subject's maternal role strain was high. Also further research is needed on social support or other factors in the subjects in child-rearing attitudes and maternal role strain.

2.Menstrual Attitudes and Maternal Child Rearing Attitudes in Middle School Female Students.

PURPOSE: This correlational study was performed to identify the impacts of maternal child rearing attitudes on the menstrual attitudes and the determinants of positive menstrual attitudes in female middle school students. METHODS: With convenience sampling, 198 middle school female students were recruited living in one major city and its surrounding areas in Korea. Data was collected using a self administered questionnaire including menstrual attitudes and maternal child rearing attitudes from April 1 to July 15, 2008. RESULTS: Among the Maternal child rearing attitudes, affectionate, achievement oriented and rational attitudes had positive correlations to a positive menstrual attitude, and an autonomous attitude had a negative correlation to a negative menstrual attitude. As determinants of positive menstrual attitudes, feeling of menarche, mother's response at first menstruation, and rational maternal child rearing attitudes were delineated and their explained variance for a positive menstrual attitude was 18.5%. There was no difference on menstrual attitudes by K clustering in terms of maternal child rearing attitudes. CONCLUSION: These results support the critical role of the mother. Especially desirable maternal child rearing attitudes in relation to a positive menstrual attitude would be affectionate, achievement oriented and rational for early adolescent girls. In further studies, considerations are needed for menstruation related education and research for early adolescents and active involvement of the mother & daughter together.

3.Content Analysis of Child Rearings of Mothers in Infant and Child Preschool.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the parenting of mothers with infants and preschoolers in an effort to determine types of parenting. METHODS: The 32 participating mothers were interviewed and from the content of the interviews, their parenting was analyzed. Statements were categorized and analyzed according to the selected procedure. RESULTS: The parenting of mothers was classified into positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement, including 55 significant statements and 14 categories. Positive reinforcement was categorized as frequent skin contact, giving pleasure, spending a lot of time with children, improving children's self-esteem, being sensitive to children's needs, realistic discipline, developing independence, listening to children, and understanding and respecting children's feelings. Negative reinforcement was categorized as overprotection, inconsistent attitude, negligence, negative educational behavior, and emphasis on obedience. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that systematic education should be provided for mothers to increase their ability to provide good parenting. It is expected that the findings of this study would be useful in the development of efficient educational programs.

4.The Relationship between Depressive Tendency in Postpartum Women and Factors such as Infant Temperament, Parentiong Stress and Coping Style.

OBJECTIVES: This Study examined the relationship of depressive tendency in postpartum women with psychosocial factors such as infant temperament, parental stress and coping style. METHODS: The subjects consisted of 105 postpartum women, each of whom had an infant aged 4 to 12 months. They were assessed on demographic variables and on measures of the depressive symptomatology, infant temperament, parental stress and the coping style using Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), the EAS temperamental survey, Parenting Stress Index(PSI), the Way of Coping Checklist(WCC). And then we assessed the relationship of depressive tendency in postpartum women with psychosocial factors. RESULTS: The results were as follows: 1) Depressive tendency in postpartum women had significant relationship with emotionality(r=.26 p<0.05) and activity(r=.22 p<0.05) of infant temperament. 2) Depressive tendency in postpartum women had significant relationship with parenting stress(r=.44 p<0.001). 3) Depressive tendency in postpartum women had no significant relationship with coping style. 4) Parental stress had significant relationship with emotionality(r=.49 p<0.001) but did not have any relationship with sociability and activity of infant temperament. Parenting stress had no significant relationship with coping style. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that depressive tendency in postpartum women correlated with emotionality and activity of infant temperament correlated with parenting stress but not correlated with coping style. Infant temperament and parenting stress to child rearing are more significantly correlated with depressive tendency in postpartum women than coping style of postpartum women.

5.Analysis on influences of guardians on behavior of left-behind children aged 3 to 7 years in countryside.

OBJECTIVETo explore the influences of guardians on emotion and behavior of rural left-behind children aged 3 to 7 years.
METHODSA self-designed questionnaire of children's condition and Children Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (the edition for parents, SDQ) were used to investigate 805 left-behind children aged 3 to 7 years in countryside.
RESULTSThe prevalence of difficulty among left-behind children was 3.5%, in male it was 4.1% and in female 2.7%, the difference was not significant (chi(2) = 1.154, P > 0.05) between male and female. The scores of peer communication problems among associate the left-behind children were (2.30 +/- 1.86), which was significantly higher than that (2.09 +/- 1.74) of not left-behind children (P < 0.05). The score of emotion symptom was (2.76 +/- 1.84) and the total score of difficulty was (11.41 +/- 4.77) among left-behind children was significantly higher than those of left-behind children with one parent stayed out (2.29 +/- 1.64) and (10.41 +/- 5.18), were significantly different (t = -2.489 - 2.006, P < 0.05), the score of social behavior (6.39 +/- 2.26) was significantly lower than that of left-behind children with father or mother stayed out (7.34 +/- 2.18, P < 0.001). The score of social behavior of children whose guardians had higher education level (7.02 +/- 2.21) was significantly higher than those with guardians who were illiterate or semiliterate (6.20 +/- 2.44, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSThere are evident problems in emotion and behavior among left-behind children with parents staying out. One of parents should stay home to care for children. To improve educational level of guardian will be beneficial to development of physical and mental health among left-behind children.

6.Types of Child Rearing Behavior of Parents during Early Childhood: Q-Methodological Approach.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the awareness of child rearing among parents of children in early childhood and to provide fundamental data for parent education programs according to child rearing type. METHODS: Q-methodology which provides a method of analyzing the subjectivity of each item was used. Forty Q items which were derived from a literature review and interviews with nurturing mothers were classified into a normal distribution using a 9-point scale. Collected data were analyzed using the QUANAL PC Program. RESULTS: Four types of parents' child rearing were identified. Type I was named 'affection-respect type', type II, 'concern-rule compliant type', type III, 'solicitude-model type', and type IV, 'geniality-encouragement type'. CONCLUSION: For proper growth and development during early childhood, parents should have rational information and awareness of their child rearing type. Results of this study can be used as essential data to develop child rearing education programs according to parents' child rearing attitude.

7.Correlations of Social Anxiety and Socio-Cultural Factors.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the degree of social anxiety and physical symptoms, situations, maneuvers in phobic situations, the degree of offending others, disability in normal Korean sample. And We also studied the correlations of social anxiety and socio-cultural factors(personality characteristics, child rearing attitudes and interpersonal attitudes). METHODS: The subjects were total of 1087 including junior high school students, high school students, college students and adult population living in Seoul. We administered the following scales: SAD (Social Avoidance and Distress Scale), Social Anxiety Symptom and Situation, Maneuvers in Phobic situations, Offending others, SDS(Sheehan's Disability Scale), EPQ(Eysenck Personality Questionnaire), Child Rearing Scale and Interpersonal Attitude Scale. RESULTS: Among social phobic symptoms, fear of eye to eye contact, fear of mistake, fear of facial expression, fear of side glancing and fear of other's gazing were prevalent in decreasing order. The level of general social anxiety were high in junior high school and high school students, and male subjects reported more social anxiety. The degree of offending others decreased with age. The most difficult social anxiety situations were public speaking and interviewing. The frequently used maneuver in phobic situations was reasoning. All subjects perceived themselves more introverted than others did. On the child rearing attitudes, rejection, high expectation, anxious, control subscales of both parent were correlated with high level of social anxiety, and the emotional care was correlated with low level of social anxiety. On the interpersonal attitudes, self-devaluation, indirectedness, overconcern of other's opinion, face-saving subscales were positively correlated with social anxiety, and the socialization and eungseok were negatively correlated with social anxiety. CONCLUSION: The social anxiety and the introversion were associated with the disability of daily activity. Some subscales of child rearing attitudes and interpersonal attitudes were also associated with the social anxiety.

8.Khmer American Mothers' Knowledge about HPV and HBV Infection and Their Perceptions of Parenting: My English Speaking Daughter Knows More.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to explore and describe Khmer mothers' understanding of HBV and HPV prevention as well as their perception of parenting on health and health education of their daughters in the US. METHODS: The qualitative pilot study guided by the revised Network Episode Model and informed by ethnographic analysis and community-based purposive sampling method were used. Face-to-face audiotaped interviews with eight Khmer mothers were conducted by bilingual female middle-aged community health leaders who spoke Khmer. RESULTS: The findings revealed that Khmer mothers clearly lacked knowledge about HBV and HPV infection prevention and had difficulty understanding and educating their daughters about health behavior, especially on sex-related topics. The findings showed that histo-sociocultural factors are integrated with the individual factor, and these factors influenced the HBV and HPV knowledge and perspective of Khmer mothers' parenting. CONCLUSIONS: The study suggests that situation-specific conceptual and methodological approaches that take into account the uniqueness of the sociocultural context of CAs is a novel method for identifying factors that are significant in shaping the perception of Khmer mothers' health education related to HBV and HPV prevention among their daughters. The communication between mother and daughter about sex and the risk involved in contracting HBV and HPV has been limited, partly because it is seen as a "taboo subject" and partly because mothers think that schools educate their children regarding sexuality and health.

9.A Multicenter Study Investigating Empathy and Burnout Characteristics in Medical Residents with Various Specialties.

We assessed empathy in medical residents, including factors modifying empathy and the relationship between empathy and burnout. Participants (n = 317 residents, response rate = 42%) from 4 university hospitals completed a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Jefferson Scale of Empathy (Health Professional version, Korean edition), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Participants were classified by medical specialty: “people-oriented specialty” (POS group) or “technology-oriented specialty” (TOS group), with more women in the POS than in the TOS group, χ2 = 14.12, P < 0.001. Being female, married, and having children were factors related to higher empathy (gender, t = -2.129, P = 0.034; marriage, t = -2.078, P = 0.038; children, t = 2.86, P = 0.005). Within specialty group, POS residents showed higher empathy scores in the fourth as compared to the first year, F = 3.166, P = 0.026. Comparing POS and TOS groups by year, fourth year POS residents had significantly higher scores than did fourth year TOS residents, t = 3.349, P = 0.002. There were negative correlations between empathy scores and 2 MBI subscales, emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP). Additionally, first year POS residents had higher DP scores than did first year TOS residents, t = 2.183, P = 0.031. We suggest that factors important for empathy are type of medical specialty, marriage, siblings, and children. Burnout state may be related to decreasing empathy.

10.Development of a Measurement Instrument for Parenting Behavior of Primary Caregivers in Early Childhood.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure the parenting behavior of primary caregivers of children in early childhood. METHODS: An instrument was developed according to Devellis's instrument development process. The participants in this study who completed the main survey were 370 mothers and grandmothers. The survey was conducted from June 1 to July 30, 2014, and collected data were analyzed using item analysis, half-split reliability and Cronbach's alpha coefficient, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, convergent validity. RESULTS: The factor structure of the instrument showed the cumulative variance as 55.7% in the factor analysis. As a result of a confirmatory factor analysis, a four-factor structure was found to be appropriate, and the construct validity and convergent validity of the instrument were thereby confirmed. The finalized parenting behavior instrument consisted of 26 items and four independent factors: affectionate, laissez-faire, educational and impulsive. A five-point Likert scale was employed, and a higher score in a particular factor showed that most of the behaviors belonged to the factor. CONCLUSION: The instrument developed in this study was found to be reliable and valid, and can be used to develop parent-child relationship building.
