4.The Prevalence of 677C=>T Mutation in Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) Gene in Spinal Neural Tube Defect.

PURPOSE: There is evidence that folic acid given before and during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy can prevent more than 50% of neural tube defect. It suggested that folic acid play a great role when a neural tube closes. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is an important enzyme in folate metabolism. Since the gene locus and mutation of MTHFR were identified, increased frequency of MTHFR variant was reported in neural tube defect. We studied the frequency of the 677C=>T mutation in the MTHFR gene to determine whether this MTHFR gene variant is more common in persons with neural tube defect and their families compared to a control population. METHODS: The study group consisted of 21 patients with meningomyelocele, 40 their parents and 7 siblings who were managed in Seoul National University College of Medicine and Dankook University Hospital during the period from Jan. 1997 to Dec. 1997. The control group consisted of 25 parents aged between 25 to 50 years who had given birth to, at least, one normal infant and 18 children under 16 years without neural tube defect. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood and a segment of the MTHFR gene was amplified using PCR technique. And treated with restriction enzyme, Hinf1. The restriction pattern was analyzed. RESULTS: The frequency of the three genotypes were as follows: normal (-/-), 47.0%; heterozygote (+/-), 41.2%; and homozygote (+/+), 11.8% in neural tube defect group and (-/-), 25.6%; (+/-), 58.1%; (+/+), 16.3% in control group. The MTHFR gene variant was present 9.5% of those with meningomyelocele, 13.3% of their mothers 10% of their fathers, and 10.3% of siblings. CONCLUSION: 1)There is no increase of the frequency of MTHFR variant polymorphism in neural tube defect compared to control group. These observations indicate that while there maybe racial differences in the mutation frequency, expanded studies involving larger numbers of subjects are required. 2) To elucidate the role of various genetic factors influencing on homocysteine levels and vitamin nutrition, research on other genetic variants, such as folic acid and vitamin B12-related enzymes and receptors, are recommended,

6.Regional Differences in Taste and Food Preferences of College Students Attending Nutritional Education via Internet I. Main and Side Dishes.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the regional differences in food preference among college students participating in a nutrition education program via internet. The subjects were 1672 college students (male: 762, female: 910) and divided into 4 regional groups. A survey using a self-administered questionnaire was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire on taste and food preferences. Data was collected via internet or by mail. Prevalence of the food preferences among regional groups was examined using SPSS statistical package. Food preferences were significantly associated with sex and region. Female students in Chungcheong and Kyungsang areas showed significantly higher preference of the hot taste compared to Seoul and Kyunggi areas. Female students in Seoul, Kyunggi and Chungcheong areas showed significantly higher preference of the boiled bean rice compared to the Kyungsang area. The preference for Kimchi stew of female students in Seoul and Kyunggi was significantly higher than those in Chungcheong and Kyungsang areas. Male students in the Chungcheong area showed significantly higher preferences of the Young radish kimchi, while female students in this area showed significantly higher preference of the Radish kimchi compared to other areas. The preference for roasted laver of female students in Seoul, Kyunggi and Kyungsang areas was significantly higher compared to the Chungcheong area. The preference for fried chicken of male students in Seoul was significantly higher than that in other areas. The preference for bean sprouts and season bonnet bellflower of male students in Seoul, Chungcheong and Kyungsang areas were significantly higher compared to the Kyunggi area. Therefore, these results provide nation-wide information on food preferences among Korean college students.

7.Computed Tomography of Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma

It is well-knwon that computed tomography (CT) is useful in detecting accurately the location, extent, erosion and relationshlp of angiofibroma to surrounding structures such as pterygopalatine fossa, It is well-known that computed tomography (CT) is useful in detecting accurately the location, extent, erosion and relatiohship of angiofibroma to surrounding structures such as pterygopalatine fossa, sphenoid slnus, and etc. CT of 20 patients with juvenile angiofibroma, which were examined for 5 years from Feburary, 1979 to May. 1984 at Department of Radiology, Seoul National University Hospital, were retrospectively analized. The results were as follows: 1. AII 20 patients of juvenile angiofibroma had tumors in nasopharynx and posterior nasal cavity showing homogeneously dense.enhancing soft tissue mass on CT. There was extension of the tumor from nasopharyhx and posterior nas.al cavity into Pílranasal sinus (60%, 12/20), pterygopalatine fossa (55%, 11/20), infratemporal fossa (30%, 6/20), posterior orbit (10%, 2/20) and cranial cavity (15%, 3/20). 2. Angiography usually adds Iittle diagnostic information, but is still needed to identify the precise source of blood supply to the tumor, and to perform the pre-operative embolization. The use of CT has deferred angiography until just before surgery, permitting embolization at optimal time. 3. CT is almost always necessary to reveal accurately the full extent of the tumor, especially intracranial space in the axial and coronal planes with contrast enhancement. CT is useful both in diagnosis as a guide to angiography and in planning the adequate thereapy of juvenile angiogibroma.
