The present study was carried out to investigate the relationships between the depth of overbite and the masseteric silent period Normal subjects of 44 were selected, which consisted of 9 open bites, 24 normal overbites and 11 deep bites, all were 19-29 years of age EMG activity was recorded on the bilateral masseteric muscles and craniofacial radiography was done. The following results were obtained 1. The mean duration of masseteric silent period was 18.58+/-4.50 msec in open bite, 17.37+/-7.05 msec in normal overbite and 19.30+/-7.62 msec in deep bite groups. 2. There were no significant differences on masseteric silent period among open bite, normal overbite and deep bite groups. 3. There were no significant correlations between masseteric silent period and craniofacial variables.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the position of tongue and hyoid bone in relation to vertical facial patterns in the adult and child. Lateral cephalograms taken in adults(63 cases, 11.7 years in average age) and children(69 cases, 22.6 years in average age) were traced and measured about position and posture of tongue and hyoid bone using the horizontal and vertical reference lines. The angle of mandibular plane to SN plane was employed to classify the samples into groups of hypodivergent and hyperdivergent. The comparison of the tongue/hyoid bone measurements between hypodivergent group and hyperdivergent group in the adult and child were statistically executed with Student's t-test. The results were as follows; 1. The tongue height was lower in the hyperdivergent group than in hypodivergent group, and higher in children than in adults. 2. The vertical height of hyoid bone was higher in hypodivergent group than in hyperdivergent group and also higher in children than in adults. 3. The anteroposterior position was of no significant difference in relation to age or vertical facial pattern. 4. The inclination of hyoid bone in relation to cranial base was steeper in children than in adults.

PURPOSE: Allelic loss on chromosome 18q is a hallmark of presence of a tummor represser gene. Recently, DPC4 (deleted in pancreatic carcinoma, locus 4), a candidate tumor suppressor gene, has been localized at 18q21. Inactivation of DPC4 gene was reported in pancreatic carcinomas, coloretal carcinomas, and prostatic carcinomas. The aim of the present study was to determine if it might be altered in stomach cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We tested for DPC4 gene mutations and allelic status at 18q21 using a modified 'cold SSCP' method in 48 primary gastric carcinoma and correlated the findings with various clinicopathologic characteristics of the patients. RESULTS: The frequency of mutations in primary gastric cancer was 27.1% (13/48). Mutations of exon 1, 8, 10 were found in 2 (4.1%), 4 (8.2%) and 7 cases (14.6%), respectively. DNA sequencing of 13 cases with DPC4 mutations identified six cases (46.1%) with substitution, four cases with deletion (30.7%), and two cases (23.1%) with insertion. No significant difference was observed in the frequency of DPC4 mutations in terms of other various clinicopathologic characteristics. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that DPC4 mutations may play a significant role in the establishment and progression of the primary gastric cancer.

Glomerulosclerosis represents a pathological hallmark of progressive glomerular injury. Mesangial cell proliferation and accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in the mesangial area frequently precede the formation of glomerulosclerosis. To understand the role of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and ECM in the development of glomerulosclerosis, we examined the expression of type IV collagen, laminin, fibronectin, and PDGF in 45 renal biopsies diagnosed with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) using a standard peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) technique. Normal control specimens were obtained from four nephrectomy specimens diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. As compared with normal controls, type IV collagen increased in 68%, fibronectin in 73%, laminin in 51%, and PDGF in 36% of patients with IgA nephropathy. The staining intensity of PDGF, type IV collagen, and fibronectin increased significantly in cases with moderate to severe mesangial cell proliferation than cases without. In the areas of glomerulosclerosis, the staining intensity of type IV collagen, laminin, and PDGF decreased, whereas that of fibronectin increased. These results suggest that mesangial cell proliferation in relation to increased PDGF expression in IgAN could stimulate the expression of type IV collagen, laminin and fibronectin leading to mesangial expansion. They also suggest that ECM decreased in advanced glomerulosclerosis. Deposition of fibronectin, which originates mainly from the blood stream, increases during the course of progressive glomerulosclerosis, whereas other ECM components decrease in advanced glomeruloslresosis.

PURPOSE: To describe the MR features of intraspinal cysticercosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records and MR images of four cases of intraspinal cysticercosis were retrospectively reviewed. The MR findings were described with regard to the location and signal intensity of the lesions, contrast enhancement, presence or absence of associated intracranial cysticerci, and other findings. RESULTS: There were three cases of subarachnoidal form and one case of intramedullary form. Cysticerci of subarachnoidal form in three cases were located in retromedullary space at C2 level, anterior to cord at C1 -C6 levels, and lumbosacral area, respectively. The signal intensities of the lesions were same as those of CSF. Localized arachnoidal enhancement was found in all three cases. In one case there was a large area of high signal intensity within the spinal cord on T2 weighted image suggesting either ischemia secondary to vascular compromise or inflammatory edema. All of these three cases accompanied intracranial cysticercosis. Intramedullary cysticercosis in one case was shown as a single I cm cystic lesion at C2 level, which showed hypointense signal on T1 weighted image, hyperintense signal on T2-weighted image, and signet-ring-like enhancement. This lesion did not accompany intracranial cysticerci. CONCLUSION: lntraspinal cysticercosis manifested as single or multiple cysts within either spinal cord or subarachnoid space, and were frequently associated with arachnoiditis.

In order to investigate the occurrence characteristics of cancer in terms of industry in Kwangju-Chonnam area, medical utilization records of industrial medical insurance corporations during the period of 1987 to 1988 were reviewed for the identification of neoplastic disease. The cases obtained from the medical records were followed up for the verification and to get additional information. Standardized incidence data were compared by occupational characteristics. Multiple logistic regression analysis was applied to analyze the difference of incidence or distribution of cancer as a whole or of some selected cancer. Total cases of cancer identified were 242 during the study period. Annual incidence rate was calculated as 123.1 per 100,000 person. The frequent types of cancer were cancers of stomach, liver, lung, colon and rectum, bladder and lymphoma in descending order. Employees of mine and other sand handling industries showed significantly higher risks for cancer of stomach and cancer as a whole. Employees of the transportation industry showed the higher risk for cancer of liver. Workers in small-sized industry (< or = 100) had a higher risk for cancer than who in large-sized industry (>100). These findings suggested the effect of occupational environmental exposure to cancer development.

Accumulation of leukocytes within the glomerulus is a key event in the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis. This process is mediated by pairs of adhesion molecules. We have examined the expression pattern of selectins (E and P), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) in 30 renal biopsies with IgA nephropathy, diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis, and minimal change disease. Normal controls were obtained from four nephrectomy specimens with renal cell carcinoma. ICAM-1 expression was significantly increased in the glomerular endothelial and mesangial cells in cases with IgA nephropathy compared with normal controls. VCAM-1 was expressed in glomerular mesangial cells in all cases with IgA nephropathy and diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis, but faintly expressed in 3 cases with minimal change disease and not expressed in normal controls. P-selectin was faintly expressed in the glomeruli in cases with IgA nephropathy and diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis. E-selectin was only expressed in the vascular endothelium in one case with IgA nephropathy and in the other with diffuse crescentic glomerulonephritis. ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were strongly expressed in the crescents. However, selectin was not expressed in the crescent. These results suggest that adhesion molecules, particularly ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, play an important role in the pathogenesis of glomerular damage and crescent formation in primary glomerular diseases.

If a mandibular prognathic patient has an extremely unnatural anteroposterior and vertical maxilla or keen esthetical perception for facial profile, orthognathic surgery must be performed along with orthodontic treatment, which alone cannot provide satisfactory results in this case. Esthetical improvement becomes an important factor in the satisfaction level of the patient's treatment result, but an attempt to objectively measure beauty holds many problems. Therefore, in the end, the patient submits the final esthetical evaluation based on his/her subjective viewpoint. Because Korean People have a tendency to prefer the facial appearance of westerners, they favor an oval shaped face over the traditional round face. This research was conducted in response to the complaints raised by patients who claim that their face had become more round from widening of facial width after the orthognathic surgery for manidubular prognathism than before the surgery. The following results were obtained on the changes in facial appearance and patient satisfaction level by analyzing the skull P-A analysis of total of 14 patients (8 male and 6 female) who underwent orthognathic surgery primarily chief complaint for manidibular prognathism and from their responses on questionnaires. These results are to be used in the research on the pre- and post- operative changes in facial height and width from orthognatic surgery. 1. There (21.4%) of 14 patients said their face had widened. 2. The A group showed no change in mandibular width but B group showed a 0.7mm reduction. The facial width increased by 0.45mm and 0.66mm in groups A and B, respectively, after the orthognathic surgery. 3. After the surgery the facial length changed by an 0.52mm increase in upper facial height, 1.19mm reduction in lower facial height, and 0.7mm reduction in mandibular height in group A. In group B group, there was a 0.67mm reduction in upper facial height, 3.66 mm reduction in lower facial height, and 5mm reduction in mandibular height. 4. In reference to facial width, the facial height showed 1.5% reduction in group A and 3.6 reduction in group B after the surgery. 5. In reference mandibular height-to-facial width ratio, there was a 1.3% reduction in group A, and 4.4% reduction in group B after the surgery. 6. In reference to the mandibular height-to-width ratio, there was a 1.3% reduction in group A 4.3% reduction in group B after the surgery. 7. Although the change in the facial width due to surgery can be ignored, sufficient explanation should be provided to the patient before surgery on the fact that the face can appear to be relatively wide because of the reduced facial length as result of the surgery.

We applied arthroscopy in the diagnosis of thirty four patients with internal derangement of the knee from March to August, 1982. Its results were compared with clinical diagnosis and arthrographic findings. We also performed arthrofomy in twenty nine patients and the final diagnosis enabled us to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of each method. The accuracy of clinical diagnosis was 63.4%. Arthrographic findings were correct in 77.8%. The diagnostic accuracy of arthroscopy was 92.3% with one false negative case. Unnecessary operations were avoided in five patients with the assistance of negative findings of arthroscopy. Arthrography and arthroscopy were complementary in the diagnosis of internal derangement of the knee.
