Hemorrhagic cystitis is potentially life-threatening sequellae of chemotherapy using oxazaphosphorine alkylating agents (cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide). Mesna contains a sulfhydryl group that is believed to bind acrolein within the urinary collecting system and reduce the hemorrhagic cystitis without affecting the chemotherapeutic potential. To date, about thirty cases of hypersensitivity or allergic reactions of the delayed and urticarial type associated with mesna have been reported. We reported two patients with systemic lupus erythematosus who developed facial rash and flushing associated with mesna which imitate malar rash.

Korean Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 2008;20(2):74-80
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between job stress and the common cold which is one of the most common infectious disease. METHODS: A KOSS (Korean Occupational Stress Scale)-based questionnaire survey was conducted targeting 6,699 workers, of which 4,637 questionnaires were returned and the data for 237 were excluded due to poor response and having pulmonary disease other than common cold. Consequently, 4,400 (65.7%) returned questionnaires were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analysis and multiple linear regression, adjusted for daily life stress, confounding variables and both, were used to evaluate the relationship between job stress and the common cold. RESULTS: After adjustment for confounding variables and daily life stress, most of the subscales of job stress contributed to an increased risk of common cold. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated that job stress may play a significant role in increasing the risk of the common cold and that further preventive efforts and studies are needed to reduce job stress and address infectious disease caused by job stress among Korean employees.

In esophageal perforation, fistulous tracts commonly occur between the esophagus and mediastinal or pleural spaces, but rarely between the esophagus and bronchi. The clinical manifestations and radiologic findings of esophageal perforation are nonspecific, and diagnosis is the often delayed; esophagography is the standard technique for evaluation of its location and degree. CT is useful in demonstrating the extraluminal manifestations of esophageal perforation and for follow-up after medical treatment, and may depict the various manifestations of perforation, according to the causes.

Korean Journal of Aerospace and Environmental Medicine 2001;11(1):13-19
BACKGROUND: The present study is undertaken to acquire normative data of health-related physical fitness(HRPF) of Republic of Korea Air Force(ROKAF) aircrews and to provide norm-referenced standard of HRPF. METHODS: From 15 May 1998 through 14 December 1999, 1284 KAF pilots are checked muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body fat percentage. RESULTS: The grip strength was relatively maintained, but flexibility, back strength, and muscular endurance were declined according to promotion and aging. And the incidence of obesity determined by bioelectrical impedence analysis was higher than that assessed on the basis of height and weight. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that many pilots who were normal in BMI have abdominal or visceral obesity. Further studies must be made on the health promotion program for the pilots, on the changes in physical fitness, and on the criterion-referenced standard of HRPF of the pilots.

6.Treatment of Peripheral Artery Pseudoaneurysm: Three Case Reports.

Journal of the Korean Radiological Society 1996;34(1):53-57
The pseudoaneurysms are resulted from complication of vascular catheterization, trauma, etc. and recently, the reports on pseudoaneurysms have been increasing. Successful treatment of pseudoaneurysms have been described usingdirect compression guided by color doppler ultrasound, instead of invasive surgical treatment. Authors experienced three cases of pseudoaneurysm ; two resulted from post-catheterization and one from trauma. We successfully treated two post-catheterization cases using C-clamp compression under the color doppler US-guidance. The traumatic case was treated by embolization instead of US-guided compression. We suggest that the compression of pseudoaneurysm using C-clamp under the US-guidance is more useful than hand or probe compression method.

Laboratory Animal Research 2010;26(3):307-309
Cat liver fluke (Platynosomum fastosum) was identified upon necropsy of a Felis catus (domestic cat). This trematode has not been reported in domestic cats previously in Korea. Diagnosis of this fluke was made by the presence of eggs in the feces of the cat through the fecal sedimentation method. Flukes in the gallbladder, bile duct, and liver parenchyma were revealed by the necropsy findings. This report describes as the first case of a domestic cat with Platynosomum fastosum in Korea.

This study was performed to investigate the mechanism of the clozapine-induced seizures in partially restrained rats by concomitant treatment with drugs affecting monoaminergic systems. Partially restrained rats treated with acute single doses of 10mg/kg clozapine exhibited myoclonic jerks(MJs). Drugs affecting the monoaminergic systems, including 2mg/kg haloperidol, 5mg/kg propranolol, 2mg/kg ritanserin, 20mg/kg fluoxetine, and 20mg/kg imipramine, were concomitantly treated with clozapine to observe the effects of these drugs on the MJs. The drugs were given intraperitoneally either as acute single doses(haloperidol, propranolol, ritanserin, and fluoxetine) or as chronic doses for 21 days(haloperidol, imipramine, ritanserin, and fluoxetine). The effects of the concomitant treatment of other drugs on the clozapine-induced MJs were evaluated by comparison of the total numbers of the MJs between the clozapine-treated and concomitantly treated groups. The results were as follows. 1) Concomitant treatment with acute single doses of haloperidol, propranolol, and fluoxetine reduced the total numbers of the clozapine-induced MJs, while concomitant treatment with ritanserin did not. 2) Concomitant treatment with chronic doses of imipramine and ritanserin increased the total numbers of the MJs, while concomitant treatment with fluoxetine reduced them. Concomitant chronic treatment with haloperidol did not affect the numbers of the MJs. These results suggest that dopamine and serotonin, not noradrenalin may be involved in the clozapine-induced MJs in partially restrained rats. Future research needs to study the function of each subtype of monoaminergic receptors on the mechanism of the clozapine-induced seizure.
