Objective:This study aimed to develop a Chinese version of Quality of life in Epilepsy Inventory(QOLIE-89) and to confirm its psychometric properties. Methods:The original English version QOLIE-89 was adapted to Chinese language through a translation back-translation procedure. The assessment included 204 patients with epilepsy .The test-retest and internal consistency reliabilities, criterion validity and discriminative validity were assessed. Results:The test-retest reliability (Pearson's correlation coefficient) for Chinese version QOLIE-89 was 0.63-0.95 and internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha) was 0.76-0.92. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the Chinese version of QOLIE-89 was composed of three dimensions(CMIN/DF=2.17,GFI=0.98, AGFI=0.90, CFI=0.98,RMSEA=0.061), which were physiology, psychology and social function that including 17 factors obtained by exploration analysis ,which can explained 71.91% of total variance. Spearman's rank correlations between Chinese version QOLIE-89 total score and QOLIE-31 total score was 0.96 and domain scores were from 0.86-1.00.QOLIE-89 items could be discriminated well between patients according to epileptic seizures severity and antiepileptic drug side effects. Conclusion:The psychometric properties of the Chinese version QOLIE-89 inventory are fairly good and similar to the American version and can be applied to assess quality of life for adult patients with epilepsy in China.

Journal of Geriatric Cardiology 2005;2(4):233-235
Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is a herb used widely in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as an antianginal drug. The exact mechanism whereby TMP treat ischemic heart disease is still not fully understood. The purpose of this study is to examine the anti-inflammatory effect of TMP in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). Methods Thirty-two patients with acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina were randomly assigned to TMP group or control group. All patients received the same standard treatment. Patients in TMP group received TMP 3mg/kg every 12 hours for 5 days. Plasma concentrations of high-sensitivity Creactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) were measured at baseline and after 5 days of therapy. Results Both CRP and SAA concentrations increased significantly in control group (P<0.05) whilst in TMP group, only SAA had a significant increase (P<0.05); the absolute increase of CRP, SAA, and PAI-1 were significantly less in TMP group than in control group (P<0.05). Conclusion TMP has an anti-inflammatory and profibrinolytic effect in patients with ACS. These effects may contribute to the clinical benefits of TMP in ischemic heart disease.

Objective To study the gene expressions of nestin and stem cell factor(SCF)in neurons after ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat brain. Methods Thirty-six adult female rats were subject to left middle cerebral artery occlusion for 1.5h and different hours of reperfusion. In site hybridization was used to examine the expression of nestin and SCF mRNA in the rats subjected to 2h, 6h, 12h, 24h, 2d, 3d, 7d, 14d of reperfusion and sham-operation group (n=4). Results (1) Nestin expression in cortex, striatum and extraventricular zone was weak in the sham-operation group, and increased markedly in the ischemic hemisphere compared with sham-operation group except of reperfusion 2h in cortex, 2h, 6h in striatum, 2h, 6h and 14d in extraventricular zone. (2)SCF expression in cortex, striatum and extraventricular zone was weak in the sham-operation group, and increased markedly in the ischemic hemisphere compared with sham-operation group except of reperfusion 2h, 6h, 12h in cortex, 2h, 6h in striatum, 2h and 14d in extraventricular zone. Conclusion It is suggested that SCF expression might enhance the proliferation of neural stem cells following ischemia-reperfusion in rats.

AIM:To investigate isometric force displacement in isolated rat main pulmonary artery rings and right main branch pulmonary artery(second pulmonary artery)rings during hypoxia hypercapnia and the role of mitogen activated protein kinase(MAPK).METHODS:The main pulmonary artery rings were dissected from the male Sprague-Dawley rats and were randomly divided into control group and hypoxia hypercapnia group. The second pulmonary artery rings were also randomly divided into control group, hypoxia hypercapnia group,DMSO incubation group,U0126 incubation group and SB203580 incubation group. The tension changes of pulmonary artery rings were monitored in vitro.RESULTS:Under normoxia conditions, there was no statistically significant change between main pulmonary artery rings and second pulmonary artery rings.A biphasic pulmonary artery contractile response to hypoxia hypercapnia in the second pulmonary artery rings was observed instead of a sharp and transient increase in the main pulmonary artery tension. Both p38 MAPK inhibitor SB203580 and ERK1/2 inhibitor U0126 significantly attenuated the delayed, but not early, contractile phase of the biphasic pulmonary artery contraction.CONCLUSION:Acute hypoxia hypercapnia causes a biphasic pulmonary artery contractile response in the second pulmonary artery, and p38 MAPK and ERK1/2 may be two key mediators in the process.

Objective To investigate the relationship between the incidence of radiation-induced brain stem injury after intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and the radiation dose volume in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed on the data of 258 patients newly diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma who received IMRT in our group from 2005 to 2013.The radiation dose per unit volume of brain stem was analyzed. The relationship between the incidence of brain stem injury induced by IMRT and the radiation dose volume was studied. The survival rate was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The factors influencing the radiation-induced brain stem injury were analyzed using the Cox regression model. Results Two patients with stage T3 disease and three patients with T4 disease had radiation-induced brain stem injury. The 3-and 5-year injury incidence rates were 1.6% and 2.4%,respectively.The latency ranged between 9 and 58 months, with a median latency of 19 months. The median D1% and Dmax for the brain stem were 54.24 and 59.22 Gy in all patients,54.31 and 59.45 Gy in patients with stage T3 disease, and 61.29 and 66.37 Gy in patients with stage T4 disease, respectively. In the five patients with brain stem injury, the D1% and Dmax were larger than 60 and 63 Gy,respectively. The univariate analysis showed that the incidence of radiation-induced brain stem injury was correlated with D1%,Dmax,D0.1 cm3,D0.5 cm3,and D1.0 cm3 (all P=0.01).The incidence of radiation-induced brain stem injury was significantly lower in patients with D1%,Dmax,D0.1 cm3,D0.5 cm3,and D1.0 cm3 no larger than 60,63,60,58,and 56 Gy,respectively (all P =0.00).Conclusions The incidence of radiation-induced brain stem injury after IMRT is relatively low in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.Strict control of the dose to the brain stem may help to reduce the incidence of brain stem injury and improve the long-term quality of life.
