In order to explore the MRI volume of the amygdala and hippocampus in patients with major depression, quantitative MRI of the amygdala and hippocampus were studied in 22 patients with major depression and compared with 13 age-matched controls. The results showed that both groups exhibited similar significant hippocampal asymmetry (left smaller than right). The volume of the bilateral hippocampus was significantly smaller in the major depression group than that in control group. The patients had significant asymmetry of the amygdalar volumes (right smaller than left). No correlation was found between hippocampal volume abnormalities and ill duration. It was concluded that the hippocampus and amygdala within limbic-cortical networks may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of major depression.

Objcetive To investigate the relationship between blood β-hydroxybutyric acid and urine ketone in the di-agnosis of diabetic ketosis (DK). Methods Peripheral blood β-hydroxybutyric acid and urine ketone were detected when the peripheral blood glucose was more than 13.9 mmol/L in patients with diabetes. Results (1) In 81 diabetes pa-tients with blood glucose more than 13.9 mmol/L, the incidence of DK was 13.58% and the incidence of diabetic ke-toacidosis (DKA) was 9.88%. (2) The peripheral blood glucose was positively correlated with β-hydroxybutyric acid (r=0.330, P=0.003), but it was not correlated with urine ketone. (3) The peripheral blood β-hydroxybutyric acid was posi-tively correlated with urine ketone (r=0.516, P=0.000). (4) In patients with DK or DKA, 5.26%(1/19) of those were with urine ketone(-) or (+-), whereas 36.84% (7/19) of those were with blood β-hydroxybutyric acid less than 1 mmol/L. (5) When urine ketone was used as the reference test for diagnosis of DK, the optimal value of blood β-hydroxybutyric acid was 0.35 mmol/L. Conclusion For missed diagnosis of DK may be happend if blood β-hydroxybutyric acid or urine ketone is used alone, the co-monitoring of blood β-hydroxybutyric acid and urine ketone can reduce the inci-dence of missed diagnosis of DK. The urine ketosis may have existed when the blood β-hydroxybutyric acid is slightly elevated (≥0.35 mmol/L). In the situation, the urine ketone should be tested in order to avoid missed diagnosis of DK.

Different geographic seed sources (80) of Jatropha curcas L. were collected in South China and planted in a germplasm resource garden to study their biological and agricultural properties. The average ground diameter, tree height and crown size of two-year old plants of the 80 sources was 7.6 cm, 167 cm and 114 cm, respectively, the average 1000-seed weight was 0.676 (0.477-0.876) kg. The trees grew further to the average size of 12.6 cm diameter, 2.69 m height and 2.1 m crown at the 4th year. Among the 80 sources, six sources had higher oil yield (seed oil content of 40%-42%) and better behaving in expression of phenotype were selected for a small-scale trial of forestation to determine oil yield. Among them a provenance with outstand in expression of phenotype yielded 964.3, 2000.6 and 2858.7 kg/ha was achieved for two- three- and four-year old trees, respectively. Additionally, a new Jatropha mutant was found in the wild and hybridization experiments showed that its oil content increased by 6%.

Objective To look for more serum biomarkers supporting the diagnosis of multiple system atrophy ( MSA) and providing more evidence for early treatment. Methods All patients and healthy controls were enrolled from January 2011 to March 2015 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University.Demographic features and biochemical examination results were collected. The t test was used to compare the lipid levels between MSA patients and controls.LSD-t test was used to compare the lipid levels among subtypes of MSA patients.Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze the influencing factors. The relevance between lipid levels and onset age, disease duration and Hoehn & Yahr stage was calculated by Spearman correlation coefficients. Results Participants included 195 MSA patients and 195 age-and gender-matched controls with no neurological diseases. The levels of total cholesterol ((4.33 ±0.90) mmol/L), triglyceride ((1.27 ±0.71) mmol/L), low-density lipoprotein (LDL;(2.70 ±0.76) mmol/L) were significantly lower in patients than in controls ((4.52 ±0.85), (1.47 ± 0.86), (2.85 ±0.71) mmol/L ,t=2.056,2.528 and 2.149 respectively, all P<0.05).The levels of total cholesterol ((4.28 ±0.96) mmol/L) and triglyceride ((1.20 ±0.64) mmol/L) were significantly lower in MSA-P patients than in control group ((4.52 ±0.85), (1.47 ±0.86) mmol/L;LSD-t=1.983, 2.566, both P<0.05).After adjusting for age, gender and histories, the odds ratio ( OR) was 0.31 (95%CI 0.15-0.65, P =0.002 ) for MSA patients in the highest quartile of triglyceride and 0.38 (95%CI 0.17 -0.83,P=0.016) for those in the highest quartile of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), compared with the lowest quartiles. And HDL level was in a significantly positive correlation with onset age (r=0.15, P=0.039).Conclusion Our data suggest that triglyceride and HDL may be associated with the prevalence of MSA, and the lower levels of HDL, the earlier onset of MSA.
