Objective To explore the value of multiple-mouse MRI in evaluating the therapeutic effect of endostatin for transplantation tumor models of colorectal carcinoma in mice. Methods 24 subcutaneously transplantation tumor’s models of colorectal carcinoma (CT-26) in mice were established, 1 week later, 16 tumor-bearing mice were sieved out and divided randomly into two groups: endostatin (ES) group and normal saline (NS) group, treated with intraperitoneal injection of endostatin 6 mg/kg?d 0.2 ml and equal volume of saline respectively for 14 days. Subsequently, MMMRI was performed, and then the mice were killed immediately and the tumors were cut into sections which were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E). Results Subcutaneous fat layer in NS group presented thinner or disappeared on T1WI,while subcutaneous fat layer in ES group presented thicker. The tumors presented inhomogeneous high signal and intratumoral stippled necrosis on T2WI. The tumor’s volumes measured by MRI and pathology were(2723.26?1136.91) mm3 and (3505.76?1350.12) mm3 respectively, there was no difference between these two measures. And there was correlation between MRI results and pathological results. There was no difference of absolute signal intensity between ES group and NS group on T1WI and T2WI. The signal intensity ratio of ES group (3.19?0.28) was higher than which of NS group (2.60?0.47) on T2WI, and there was no difference on T1WI. Conclusion The therapeutic effect for endostatin on transplantation tumor models of colorectal carcinoma in mice can be displayed distinctly in MMMR image, and the inhibition rate of results can be displayed exactly and noninvasively.

Objective To investigate the present status and developments of Chinese military neurosurgery, make an objective analysis about the achievements and deficiencies, and propose a developing trend for the field of Chinese military neurosurgery. Methods The scientific literatures of neurosurgery published domestically and abroad in recent 5 years were partially reviewed. The advances and achievements in basic researches and clinical works of neurosurgery acquired during the period of the 11th Five Year Plan were analyzed. Results During the period of the 11th Five Year Plan, Chinese military neurosurgery was still in the lead position in traditional areas such as traumatic brain injury. In the meantime, great achievements were obtained in the researches of brain and spinal cord tumors, endovascular treatment and functional neurosurgery, and 47 items of Army Science and Technology Advancement Prizes or Military Medical Achievement Awards were acquired. A great progress was made in personnel training. However, unbalanced development in neurosurgery field still existed within military departments, between military and civil departments and between different regions, so an enhanced technical interchange and cooperation is needed. Conclusions On the coming period, the research work of military neurosurgery should focuse on basic and clinical research of gene therapy to keep in step with neurosurgical trends in the world. On the other hand, attention should be paid to technological innovation with military features such as professional and general treatment of traumatic brain injury and researches on the development of protective equipments.

Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of CT myelography (CTM) in brachial plexus injury. Methods Twenty-seven patients with brachial plexus injury were examined by using cervical CTM with spiral scan and bone reconstruction algorithm. CT images were reviewed by the senior radiologists, who determined if the nerve root avulsion was presented. The criteria of diagnosing nerve root avulsion were loss of normal nerve root appearance in the Isovist filled thecal sac in consecutive CTM slices plus companion signs. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of CTM in diagnosing nerve root injuries were calculated with operation findings and follow-up results as gold standard. Results Direct sign of nerve root avulsion was the loss of normal nerve root defect seen in the Isovist filled thecal sac in consecutive CTM slices. Indirect signs included: (1) Pseudomeningocele bulge: The leak of Isovist into nerve root sheath, and extended into foramina; (2) Arachnoid cyst: displacement of spinal cord; (3) Dissymmetry of subarachnoid cavity: deformity of thecal sac, partially lack of Isovist into arachnoid space; (4) Non-integrity of dural capsule wall: one side of capsule cavity was obstructed. Part of the surface of spinal cord was exposed. Brachial plexus injury could be diagnosed by direct sign with one of the indirect signs. Of the 27 patients (128 nerve roots), 91 nerve root avulsions were found on CTM, and 37 was found normal. Compared with operation findings, 84 were true positive, 7 false positive, 34 true negative, and 3 false negative. Based on these results, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 96.6%, 82.9%, and 92.2%, respectively. Conclusion CTM is accurate in detecting nerve root avulsion of brachial plexus.

Objective To introduce the concept of long length finger reconstruction and our corresponding three operative methods. Methods In a series of 10 finger defect cases with one of their long finger amputated at or proximal to proximal phalanx, long finger reconstruction were accomplished with one of the three methods. First method: For emergency patients whose proximal finger segment were demolished, the donor second toe was transplanted intercalatedly with microsurgical technique between the original proximal finger stump and the saved distal finger segment. Second method: Bilateral second toes were harvested and connected together to form a long transplant in order to reconstruct a normal length finger. Third method: From one foot, the donor second toe is harvested with its dorsal and plantar skin flap. From the other foot, the second toe is harvested with its metatarsophalangeal joint and skin flaps from neighbouring sides of great and third toes. The skin covering will be perfect. During transplantation of the proximal transplant, the MPJ should be fixed at 90°plantar rotation position for better flexion. Results Uneventful survival of reconstructed fingers were obtained in all ten cases. Postoperative functional evaluation of the patients with standard set by Chinese Society of Hand Surgery showed to be excellent in 1 case, good in 5 cases and fair in 4 cases. The overall excellent/good rate was 60%. Conclusion By application of these three reconstruction methods, the challenging problem of long length finger can be solved to reasonable extent.
