Objective To study correlation of the retinal nerve epithelium layer thickness measured with different optical coher-ence tomography (OCT) in vivo with histological measurement. Design Experimental study. Participants 15 rabbit eyes. Methods The retina measurement position of 15 rabbit eyes were marked by laser, and then were scanned by OSE-1800 OCT and Stratus OCT. Reti-nal nerve epithelium layer thickness was measured in retinal histological shdes of rabbit eyes. The results measured with three methods were compared and linear regression analyses were done with SPSS11.5 software. Results The average retinal nerve epithelium layer thickness measured with OSE-1800 OCT, Stratus OCT and histological method were 119.5±7.4, 118.0±5.6, and 116.3±8.8μm respec-tively(P=0.292). Retinal nerve epithelium layer thickness measured with both OCT instruments had the best correlation (r=0.914, P= 0.000), and the thickness measured with Stratus OCT and histological method had the better correlation (r=0.872, P=0.001), and the thickness measured with OSE-1800 OCT and histological method had the significant correlation (r=0.833, P=0.002). Conclusions The retinal nerve epithelium layer thickness measured with different OCTs in vivo correlate well with histomorphometry, and the measure-ment of both OCT instruments are accurate. Objective To explore the changes in serum plasminogen activator inhibitor 1(PAI-1),tissue factor(TF) and antithrombin Ⅲ(ATⅢ) in early period of severe limb injury,and their relationship with the occurrence of traumatic pre-DIC and DIC after trauma.Methods Thirty-five patients were divided into severe injury group(AIS score ≥3,20 cases),minor injury group(15 cases),and 10 healthy subjects served as control.The 35 patients with injury were divided again into pre-DIC group(10 cases),DIC group(3 cases),and others(22 cases).Fasting peripheral venous blood was collected on day 1,3,6 from the patients and healthy subjects.The changes in TF,ATⅢ and PAI-1 levels were detected and statistically analyzed.Results The PAI-1 levels were higher in minor injury group and severe injury group than that in control group on day 1(P

Background Fundus photography is a traditional method for detecting local retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) defects,but the evaluation of its result depends on the observer's experience.The spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) exhibit the defects of RNFL very clearly.Objective This study was to evaluate the diagnosis value and correlation between topographic profiles of localized RNFL defects determined by spectral domain and time domain OCT with fundus photography.Methods Forty-one normal eyes of 41 subjects and 55 eyes of 55 glaucomatous patients with localized,wedge-shaped RNFL defects identified by two glaucoma specialists in fundus photographs were enrolled in the clinical study.The angular location and width of RNFL defects determined on the images of fundus photography,Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT were analyzed respectively using Pearson's correlation coefficient and linear regression analysis.This study followed the Helsinki declaration and was approved by Ethic Committee of Shenzhen Eye Hospital.Written informed consent was obtained from each individual before the clinical examination.Results Seventy-five RNFL defects were identified in 55 eyes by two glaucoma specialists unanimously with the defect position at superior-temporal and inferior-temporal quadrants.The sensitivity of Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT to determining RNFL defects were 88.0% and 69.3% respectively and their specificities were 92.7% and 97.6% respectively.The angular locations of RNFL defects by Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT were highly correlated with those by fundus photography(r=0.993,r=0.992,P＜0.001);while the angular widths of RNFL defects by Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT were moderately correlated with those by fundus photography(r=0.420,r=0.432,P=0.019,P=0.002).No significant differences were found in the defect width of RNFL between Cirrus HD-OCT or Stratus OCT and fundus photography(Cirrus HD-OCT:P=0.114;Stratus OCT:P=0.074),and significant difference was found in that between Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT(P=0.002).Conclusion Spectral domain OCT and time domain OCT can localize RNFL defects with high sensitivity and specificity.The measure value of Cirrus HD-OCT and Stratus OCT for RNFL defects shows a good diagnostic agreement with fundus photography.

OBJECTIVEThe purpose of this study was to observe the tissue tolerance of Ti-HA functionally graded-material (FGM) and the form of the material-bone interface.

METHODSThe sintered Ti -HA FGM, pure HA and pure Ti were respectively implanted into the parietal bone of rabbits. The specimens were observed by SEM at 2, 4, 8 postoperative weeks.

RESULTSIn the early stage, the new bone surrounding the Ti -HA FGM formed earlier with larger amount and better maturity than the pure Ti. The condition was similar to the pure HA. Two months after the operation, direct bonding of material-bone interface was formed between the Ti -HA FGM and the new bone as an integral body. However, there was a little space left between the new bone and the pure Ti.

CONCLUSIONSThe Ti -HA FGM has good tissue tolerance. Its early integration with bone is similar to pure HA and better than pure Ti.

OBJECTIVE: By observing the cerebral beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta-APP) expression in the chronic alcoholism rats with slight cerebral injury, to discuss the correlation of chronic alcoholism and death caused by traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage (TSAH). METHODS: Sixty male SD rats were randomly divided into watering group, watering group with strike, alcoholism group and alcoholism group with strike. Among them, the alcohol was used for continuous 4 weeks in alcoholism groups and the concussion was made in groups with strike. In each group, HE staining and immunohistochemical staining of the cerebral tissues were done and the results were analyzed by the histopathologic image system. RESULTS: In watering group, there was no abnormal. In watering group with strike, mild neuronic congestion was found. In alcoholism group, vascular texture on cerebral surface was found. And the neurons arranged in disorder with dilated intercellular space. In alcoholism group with strike, diffuse congestion on cerebral surface was found. And there was TSAH with thick-layer patches around brainstem following irregular axonotmesis. The quantity of beta-APP IOD in alcoholism group was significantly higher in the frontal lobe, hippocampus, cerebellum, brainstem than those in watering group with strike and alcoholism group with strike. CONCLUSION The cerebral tissues with chronic alcoholism, due to the decreasing tolerance, could cause fatal TSAH and pathological changes in cerebral tissues of rats under slight cerebral injury.

OBJECTIVEKawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile vasculitic syndrome of unknown etiology that preferentially affects coronary artery. It has been suggested that proinflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) are key players during acute KD. Recently, the polymorphisms relative to major transcriptional start site of TNF-alpha and IL-10 gene were shown to influence the level of TNF-alpha and IL-10 production in vitro. This study was aimed to investigate the genetic association of TNF-alpha and IL-10 promoter polymorphisms in juvenile patients of Han nationality with KD, and to investigate the possible associations with clinical manifestations of the disease.

METHODSFour polymorphism sites of TNF-alpha and IL-10 gene promoter regions from 96 children with KD were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). One hundred and sixty age-matched normal children of the Han nationality were used as control. All patients accepted Doppler echocardiography examination in order to differentiate coronary artery lesions.

RESULTSThere was significant difference in allele frequencies of -308 (A/G) site of the TNF-alpha gene between children of the Han nationality and those of Japanese and Caucasian in America. There were significant differences in the allele frequencies of -1082 (G/A), -819 (C/T) and -592 (A/C) of IL-10 gene between children of the Han nationality and their British Counterparts (P < 0.01). There was no significant difference in allele frequencies of -308 (A/G) site of TNF-alpha gene between children with KD and normal controls. There was no significant difference in the haplotypes and the allele frequencies of the above three sites of IL-10 between the two groups. However, when clinical features were examined, the genotype frequency of TNF-alpha-308A was significantly higher in IVIG-resistant KD patients than that of TNF-alpha-308G genotype (67% vs 5%, chi(c)(2) = 90.48, P < 0.01). The genotype of TNF-alpha-308A was closely associated with IVIG-resistant KD (P < 0.01, relative risk 42.25, 95% confidence interval 15.81-112.88). The haplotype frequency of IL-10 -1082A/-819T/-592A was also higher in patients with coronary artery lesion (CAL) caused by KD than those of Non-ATA haplotype (52% vs 20%, chi(2) = 18.36, P < 0.01). The haplotypes of IL-10 -1082A/-819T/-592A was significantly associated with CAL caused by KD (P < 0.01, relative risk 4.26, 95% confidence interval 2.20-8.25).

CONCLUSIONThe genotype of TNF-alpha-308A is one of the important factors that probably influence the therapeutic effect of KD. The haplotypes (-1082/-819/-592) of IL-10 gene promoter might be related to the pathogenesis of coronary artery complication of KD and -1082A/-819T/-592A haplotypes might be regarded as a genetic marker of risk factor for coronary artery lesion in KD.

The Formosan sika deer (Cervus nippon taiouanus) is an endemic subspecies in Taiwan. The original wild deer has been extinct since the late 1960s. The largest captive population is located at the Taipei Zoo. Except for infectious disease outbreaks, no systemic medical research has been reported for this subspecies. This study was conducted to analyze the medical status of the captive Formosan sika deer population, including the hematological and serum chemistry characteristics. To accomplish this, medical records for 34 Formosan sika deer from January 2003 to January 2014 were acquired and analyzed. The most common illness and cause of death was trauma, followed by gastrointestinal and respiratory disease, respectively. The hematologic and serum chemical values of healthy adults were quite different from those of sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis). This study provides a closer medical understanding of this subspecies and the results will facilitate its management.

Objective A hepatitis A outbreak in a primary school was reported by Gan County Center for Disease Control and Province (CDC) and an investigation was conducted to identify the possible source of infection and risk factors for transmission.Methods A probable case was defined as having onset of jaundice (yellow urine,sclera or skin) or a 2-fold increase in Alanine aminotransferase with 2 or more,of the followings symptoms:anorexia,disgust of oil,abdominal pain,nausea,fatigue,vomiting,in students and staff of the primary school between 1 November 2008 and 14 February 2009.A confirmed case was IgM positive for hepatitis A,added on a probable case.We searched for cases through reviewing medical records in the township hospital and village clinics and conducting symptom screening among students or teachers.We also conducted a case-control study to compare the exposure histories of 19 cases and 53 anti-HAV-IgM negative controls randomly selected from those asymptomatic students in the same grade.Results 21 cases from all the students was identified,with the attack rate as 3.5％.The epidemic curve showed the two peaks of the outbreak were 28 days apart,both indicating that they were related to the exposure of the source of origin.74％of the case-students drank the unboiled Well B water,compared to 42％ of control-students (OR=4.0,95％CI:1.1-15).The total bacterial count was 600 cfu/ml and the total coliform was 23 MPN/100 ml in one sample collected from the well water.Conclusion This hepatitis A outbreak was caused by drinking contaminated water in Well B.We recommended that all the schools should use chlorinated municipal pipe water.Public health authorities should strengthen the supervision of quality of water in schools.

Objective To investigate the diagnostic value of multimodal MRI for dual pathology (DP)in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).Methods The methods of voxel based morphometry (VBM)and voxel based analysis (VBA)had been employed to study the difference between 36 patients (20 cases left group and 16 cases right group)with TLE caused by DP and 36 healthy subjects on the grey matter (GM)volume,exponential apparent diffusion coefficient (eADC)and cerebral blood flow (CBF)value.The corresponding statistical study had also been conducted.Results There were significant statistical differences (FDR correction,P=0.001)between healthy subj ects and patients on the GM volume,eADC and CBF value.Those values decreased with diseased laterality and wider range in functional imaging.These overlaying abnormal brain regions were located in the temporal pole (superior temporal gyrus), temporal pole (middle temporal gyrus),middle temporal gyrus,inferior temporal gyrus,fusiform gyrus,hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus which represented in all examination results.Conclusion The combined findings of multimodal MRI can improve the localization ability of seizure focus in TLE,which caused by DP,before surgery.
