Translational medicine, characterized by multi-disciplinary cooperation, is a new research area focusing on patients. Although translational medicine is still in its early stages in China, it has attracted increasing attention. To apply translational medicine, it is essential to implement the principles and methods of systematic biology to break the inherent barriers between basic and clinical science. Moreover, it is important to update research ideas, strengthen the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and construct public library research resources and exchange platforms.

Chinese Journal of General Surgery 2001;10(3):253-255
Objective To study the clinical manifestation of small bowel tumors and the prognostic factors. Methods Retrospective analysis of the clinical data were made on 42 cases of primary small bowel tumors (except periampullary tumors) admitted to our hospital from 1974 to 1999. Results In this series, there were 6 cases of benign small bowel tumors, 5 of them were leiomyoma and 1 adenoma. Of the 36 cases of malignant tumors, there were malignant lyphoma in 17 cases (47.2%), adenocarcinoma in 11 (30.6%), leiomyosarcoma in 6(16.7%), carcinoid tumor in 1 (2.8%) and neurofibrosarcoma in 1 (2.8%). There was no characteristic clinical sign in small bowel tumors; endoscopy and barium series were the main diagnostic methods. About 50 per cent of patients with malignancy had metastasis, and only 18 cases (50%) received radical resection. Follow-up were available on 36 cases. The overall 5-year survival rate in the patients with malignant small bowel tumors was 47.3%. Multivariate analysis showed that metastasis and diameter of tumors were the main prognostic factors of the 5-year survival. Conclusions Early diagnosis and early treatment play the key roles in improving the prognosis of malignant small bowel tumors. Radical resection should be taken if no metastasis is found.

AIM: To study the influences of P1 promoter activity of furin gene on the functions of hepatocytes in patients with liver cirrhosis.METHODS: The patients with liver cirrhosis of 180 cases were recruited. The single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP-229 C/T) in P1 promoter of furin gene was genotyped using competitively differentiated polymerase chain reaction. The relationships between the promoter activity based on genotyping and the serum levels of liver enzymes, total bilirubin, albumin and prothrombin were observed.RESULTS: The distribution frequencies of allele C and T were 75.3%(271/360) and 24.7%(89/360).Those of genotypes CC,CT and TT were 62.2%(112/180),26.1%(47/180) and 11.7%(21/180),respectively.The distribution frequencies of the genotypes were not related to the serum levels of major liver enzymes, albumin, total bilirubin and prothrombin, except for alkaline phosphatase and ?-glutamyl transferase.CONCLUSION: The activity of furin promoter exerts no effects on the main functions of hepatocytes, suggesting that furin may be a new therapeutic target for HBV infection.

BACKGROUND:Stimulation of the pudendal nerve as a target can improve neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury, by adjusting the frequency, intensity, pulse width, as wel as regulating synergistic effect of detrusor and urethral sphincter. OBJECTIVE: To assess the research status of electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve in the treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury. METHODS: We searched the folowing databases for articles addressing electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve for neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury: PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controled Trials (CENTRAL), China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, and VIP Database. The search was updated to July 2014, and the reference lists of the identified studies were manualy screened for additional studies. The study selection and data extraction were independently conducted by two reviewers. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Fourteen studies were included in this review. We derived the folowing points by analyzing the included studies: Electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve has positive effects on rehabilitation of neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury; pudendal nerve electrical stimulation can modulate the coordination of the detrusor and the external urethral sphincter, improve the bladder compliance and restore bladder function by regulating pudendal-to-bladder reflex and spinal reflexes to the bladder. Electrical stimulation of the pudendal nerve may be potentialy implemented as a feasible treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury. More high quality researches should be conducted to clarify the efficacy and the potential active mechanisms of pudendal nerve electrical stimulation for neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury because the number of clinical reports published in this study area is limited, neurophysiological mechanisms underlying biphasic regulation of frequency on bladder function are not wel known, and which intensity of pudendal nerve electrical stimulation is more effective than others for the treatment of neurogenic bladder dysfunction after spinal cord injury remains unknown.

[Abstract ] Objective Bioinformatics provides a lot of valuable information for online prediction of new genes. In this study, we predicted the biological function of ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme 2S ( UBE2S) based on bioinformatics. Methods The UBE2S gene was screened and cloned from the cDNA library of human HepG2 cells. The relationship of the structure and function of UBE2S was explored based on the full-length cDNA library.MEGA5.05, CLUSTALW2 and SWISS-MODEL were used to study the phylogeny, conservation, and 3D structure of UBE2S. Results The UBE2S gene encoded a polypeptide of 241 residues with a predicted molec-ular weight of 23 770 and an isoelectric point of 8.81.The UBE2S protein contained no transmembrane locus and the probabilities of their functions of growth factors, cation channel and structural protein were 8.904, 0.313, and 0.291.The analysis of BLASTp showed that the isolated UBE2S had a 90-97%identity with the other species. Conclusion Analysis of the structure and function of the UBE2S protein can not only provide more information about its gene family but also pave the way for further experimental studies on the molecular mechanism of the consequent hepatocellular carcinoma.
