Objective To observe effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on the expression of apoptosis related protein B-cell lymphoma/leukemia gene 2 (Bcl-2) and Bcl-associated protein X (Bax) in the hippoeampal CA1 region of rats with cerebral infarction, and on their behavior. MethodsAn animal model of cerebral ischemia was established by right side middle cerebral artery occlusion using thread in 48 male, adult Wistar rats, who were then randomly divided equally into an EA group and a control group. Both groups were sub-divided into 1 week,2 weeks and 3 weeks subgroups. The EA group began receiving EA 24h after the occlusion, applied at the Baihui (DU20) and Dazhui (BU14) points, once daily, for one,two or three weeks. The control group was reared conventionally and was not given any special treatment. The rats'learning and memory, motion and neural function were evaluated. The expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in the CA1 region of the hippocampus on the infarcted side and changes of apoptosis indexes were detected using immunohistochemical techniques.ResultsThe learning, memory, motion and neural function of the EA group rats were better on average than those of the control group at all observation time points. The expression of Bcl-2 protein increased along with reduced expression of Bax protein in the EA group significantly more than among the controls.TUNEL positive cells in the CA1 region of the hippocampus were reduced significantly in the EA group compared with the control group.ConclusionsBehavioral ability after cerebral infarction can be improved by EA at the Baihui (DU20) and Dazhui (BU14) points.EA can up-regulate the expression of Bcl-2 and down-regulate the expression of Bax and reduce TUNEL positive cells in the CA1 region of the hippocampus after cerebral infarction, which might be the mechanism of its neuroprotection.

Objective To evaluate effects of glucocorticoids on maxillary bone mineral density in rats with acute adriamycin-induced nephrotoxicity (ADR). Methods Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups, control group, glucocorticoids- treated group, ADR group and ADR + glucocorticoids- treated group. ADR group and ADR +glucocorticoids-treated group were given 4 mg/kg adriamycin injection via tail vein to establish ADR model. Control group and glucocorticoids-treated group were given 4 mg/kg saline injection via tail vein. After establishment of ADR model, glucocorticoids-treated group and ADR + glucocorticoids-treated group were intragastric administration of 30 mg/(kg · d) methylprednisolone for 10 weeks, and control group and ADR group were given the same volumes of normal saline. Values of bone calcium pigment (BGP), type Ⅰ collagen, N-terminal pro-peptide (PINP), β-Ⅰ type collagen C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide (CTX) were detected by ELISA. The micro-CT scan was used to measure Tb.Th, Tb.Sp, Tb.N, BVF and bone mineral density (BMD). Results Compared with other three groups, the levels of BGP and PINP were significantly decreased, and CTX were significantly increased in ADR + glucocorticoids-treated group (P<0.05). Micro-CT analysis showed that there was significant maxillae osteoporosis, including changes of porous micro architecture, lower BMD, decreased BVF, lower Tb.Th and widening Tb.Sp in ADR + glucocorticoids-treated group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in Tb.N between four groups. Conclusion There is imbalanced bone metabolism in rat model of ADR. High-dose hormone therapy can accelerate the occurrence of osteoporosis, decrease bone metabolism, and affect bone structure.

Objective:To determine the clinical features of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and the risk factors for central compartment lymph node (CCLN) metastasis in PTMC. Methods:Data of 1 401 patients with PTMC who were treated in Tianjin Medi-cal University Cancer Institute and Hospital between January 2014 and December 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Chi-square test and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were used to study the risk factors. Results:With regard to clinicopathological features, the sex ratio is 1:3.4 in patients with PTMC. CCLN metastasis affected 427 (30.5%) of the total 1 401 patients. Age (χ2=14.587, P<0.01), sex (χ2=21.636, P<0.01), tumor multifocality (χ2=35.505, P<0.01), tumor size (χ2=58.868, P<0.01), tumor site (χ2=8.385, P<0.05), and extracapsular/extraglandular invasions (χ2=26.481, P<0.01) were significantly correlated with CCLN metastasis. For patients with a soli-tary primary tumor, tumor location in the lower third of the thyroid lobe was associated with a higher risk of CCLN metastasis (48.1%). The male gender, age<45 years, tumor size>6 mm, extracapsular spread, and tumor bilaterality were independently correlated with CCLN metastasis. Conclusion:A prophylactic neck dissection of the central compartment must be considered particularly in male PT-MC patients with age<45 years, tumor size>6 mm, extracapsular spread, and tumor bilaterality.

Objective To investigate the local or systemic effects of initial periodontal therapy on peritoneal dialysis in patients with chronic kidney disease and periodontitis. Methods Sixty-one patients with both periodontitis and regular peritoneal dialysis were selected in this study and were randomly divided into observation group (n=31) and control group (n=30). Patients in observation group were given periodontal initial therapy (ultrasonic supragingival scaling and ultrasonic subgingival irrigation, drug, root planing, oral health education) and peritoneal dialysis treatment. Patients in control group were given only peritoneal dialysis treatment. Clinical parameters including plaque index (PLI), gingival index (GI) and probing depth (PD) were detected before and one month after treatment in two groups. The concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in gingival sulcus fluid and serum samples were measured by immune transmission turbidity method in two groups. Results There were no significant differences in PLI, GI, PD, hs-CRP of gingival sulcus fluid, and serum hs-CRP before treatment between the two groups. After one-month initial therapy, all the indexes were decreased in observation group, which were significantly different compared with those before treatment (P<0.05). And all the indexes were significantly lower in observation group than those of control group. There were no significant differences in PLI, PD, GI, hs-CRP of gingival sulcus fluid, and serum hs-CRP between control group and observation group before treatment. Conclusion Periodontal initial treatment can improve the periodontal inflammation in patients with chronic kidney disease, and reduce the concentration of systemic inflammatory factor hs-CRP, decreasing the risk of infection.

Fuzi is a medicine used for rescuing from collapse by restoring yang as well as a famous toxic traditional Chinese medicine. In order to ensure the efficacy and safe medication, Fuzi has mostly been applied after being processed. There have been different Fuzi processing methods recorded by doctors of previous generations. Besides, there have also been differences in Fuzi processing methods recorded in modern pharmacopeia and ancient medical books. In this study, the authors traced back to medical books between the Han Dynasty and the period of Republic of China, and summarized Fuzi processing methods collected in ancient and modern literatures. According to the results, Fuzi processing methods and using methods have changed along with the evolution of dynasties, with differences in ancient and modern processing methods. Before the Tang Dynasty, Fuzi had been mostly processed and soaked. From Tang to Ming Dynasties, Fuzi had been mostly processed, soaked and stir-fried. During the Qing Dynasty, Fuzi had been mostly soaked and boiled. In the modem times, Fuzi is mostly processed by being boiled and soaked. Before the Tang Dynasty, a whole piece of Fuzi herbs or their fragments had been applied in medicines; Whereas their fragments are primarily used in the modern times. Because different processing methods have great impacts on the toxicity of Fuzi, it is suggested to study Fuzi processing methods.

China Journal of Chinese Materia Medica 2015;40(13):2582-2588
Good medicinal herbs, good drugs. Good evaluation method and indices are the prerequisite of good medicinal herbs. However, there exist numerous indices for quality evaluation and control in Chinese medicinal materials. However, most of these indices are non-interrelated each other, as well as having little relationship with efficiency and safety. The results of different evaluatior methods may not be consistent, even contradictory. Considering the complex material properties of Chinese medicinal materials, single method and index is difficult to objectively and comprehensively reflect the quality. Therefore, it is essential to explore the integrated evaluation methods. In this paper, oriented by the integrated evaluation strategies for traditional Chinese medicine quality, a new method called integrated quality index (IQI) by the integration of empirical evaluation, chemical evaluation, and biological evaluation was proposed. In addition, a study case of hypertoxic herb Aconitum carmichaelii Debx. was provided to explain this method in detail. The results suggested that in the view of specifications, the average weight of Jiangyou aconite was the greatest, followed by Weishan aconite, Butuo aconite, Hanzhong aconite, and Anxian aconite; from the point of chemical components, Jiangyou aconite had the characteristic with strong efficacy and weak toxicity, next was Hanzhong aconite, Butuo aconite, Weishan aconite, and Anxian aconite; taking toxicity price as the index, Hanzhong aconite and Jiangyou aconite have the lower toxicity, while Butuo aconite, Weishan aconite, and Anxian aconite have the relatively higher one. After the normalization and integration of evaluation results, we calculated the IQI value of Jiangyou aconite, Hanzhong aconite, Butuo aconite, Weishan aconite, and Anxian aconite were 0.842 +/- 0.091, 0.597 +/- 0.047, 0.442 +/- 0.033, 0.454 +/- 0.038, 0.170 +/- 0.021, respectively. The quality of Jiangyou aconite is significantly better than the others (P < 0.05) followed by Hanzhong aconite, which is consistent with the traditional understanding of genuineness. It can be concluded that IQI achieves the integrated control and evaluation for the quality of Chinese medicinal materials, and it is an exploration for building the good medicinal herbs standards. In addition, IQI provides technical supports for the geoherbalism evaluation, selective breeding, the development of precision decoction pieces, high quality and favourable price in market circulation, and rational drug use.
