OBJECTIVE: To investigate the regulating pattern of kidney-tonifying recipes and spleen-invigorating recipe on the expression of T lymphocyte apoptosis signaling-related genes in corticosterone-treated rats. METHODS: We analyzed the activation-induced T lymphocyte apoptpsis rate through TUNEL-labelled flow-cytometry assay, quantified the mRNA expression level of T cell apoptosis-regulating genes by using the fluoresecence real-time PCR, analyzed the activity of caspase-8 and caspase-3 by colorimetric assay. RESULTS: (1) T lymphocyte apoptosis rate of corticosterone-treated rats was higher than that of the normal control rats; T lymphocyte apoptosis rates of Youguiyin treated rats and Bushen Yishou Capsule treated rats were lower than that of the corticosterone-treated group; T lymphocyte apoptosis rate of Sijunzi Decoction treated rats displayed no significance compared with that of the corticosterone-treated group. (2) Pro-apoptotic genes such as Fas, FasL, TNFR1, and Bax displayed increased expression level in corticosterone-treated group compared with normal control group. Two kidney-tonifying recipes down-regruated the expression level of FasL and TNFR1, at the same time, both recipes up-regulated the expression level of Bcl-2. The spleen-invigorating recipe had up-regulating effect on the expression level of Bcl-2. And all these results had statistical significance. (3) The activities of caspase-8 and caspase-3 were increased in corticosterone-treated rats compared with normal control; both kidney-tonifying recipes had significant effect on decreasing the activities of these two apoptosis executioners. CONCLUSION: The excessive apoptosis of T cell in corticosterone-treated rats could be effectively modulated with two kidney-tonifying recipes. Down-regulating the expression of FasL and TNFR1 and up-regulating the expression of Bcl-2 as well as decreasing the activities of caspase-8 and caspase-3 may be the unique regulating pattern of tonifying-kidney method with respect to T cell apoptosis related genes in corticosterone-treated rats.

Objective To understand the current status of health knowledge demands and its associated factors in general population. Methods A questionnaire-based survey by convenience sampling method was carried out in 700 subjects aged over 15 years old in October 2014. Information of demographics and health knowledge demands were collected. Data was analyzed using SPSS 17.0. Results A total of 653 subjects were responded, with a response rate of 93.3%. Respondents in male and female were 339 (51.9%) and 314 (48.1%) respectively. There were no differences among age , educational levels and self-reported health status between the two genders 86.6% of the participants showed that they had interests in health knowledge. Educational level and age were the factors associated with the interests. 65.8% and 72.3% of people want to get practical health knowledge of western and traditional Chinese medicine respectively. The top concern of health issues were cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. For preferred ways of learning health knowledge , television is the favorite one (44%), especially in elderly (over 63.8%). A relative high option rate was newspaper and magazine in all age groups. However, young people showed that they preferred the ways of the internet and Wechat (about 50%). For health disseminators, the participants in all age had greatest trust in experts in large hospitals (over 60%). The second option was retired old experts. The experienced patients were convinced in some degree and increased with age. Conclusions In future, health education in general population should considered the characteristics of the population and the applicability of knowledge. Besides , it is necessary to integrate traditional Chinese medicine with Western medicine, traditional media with new media, also authoritative experts and living example.

Objective To investigate the role of monoclonal antibody of insulin-like growth factor Ⅰ receptor (IGF-ⅠR) in the proliferation and apoptosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma cell line CGTH W-3, and the effect of IGF-ⅠR monoclonal antibody on papillary thyroid carcinoma cells and normal follicular cells in primary culture. Methods MTT and TUNEL method were used to determine the proliferation and apoptosis of cells respectively after IGF-ⅠR monoclonal antibody intervention. Results The inhibitory effect on cell proliferation was enhanced with the increasing IGF-ⅠR monoclonal antibody concentration and duration of action. IGF-ⅠR monoclonal antibody induced apoptosis of CGTH W-3 cells remarkably even in the concentration of 50 nmol/L. Primary papillary thyroid carcinoma cells and normal follicular cells were inhibited by 100 nmol/L IGF-ⅠR monoclonal antibody, and the degree of inhibition was significantly higher in carcinoma cells than that in normal follicular cells (P

Objective To study epidemiological and clinical patterns of leprosy in children in China. Methods The data of leprosy in children from 1989 to 1998 in China were analyzed in terms of gender, infection source, detection mode, skin lesion, nerve damage, leprosy reaction, clinical type and skin smear. Results A total of 22 437 leprosy cases were detected during 1989~ 1998, of which 912 (4.1% ) were child cases (560 males and 352 females). Average delay in detection was 1.13 years (n=909). The main source of infection was close contact within families, accounting for 69.2% , and majority of cases were detected through active modes. Among children with leprosy, 96.8% were with skin lesions, 76.0% with nerve damage, 4.7% with leprosy reactions, 12.4% with grade II disability and 41.2% with positive skin smears. The average proportion of child cases was 4.2% in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces, and 1.3% in Shandong, Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces. The proportion of child cases was stable in Guizhou and Sichuan Provinces during this period, whereas in 1998 it significantly increased to 11.6% in Yunnan. Conclusion The present study suggests that proportion of children with leprosy is one of the sensitive indicators of leprosy endemicity. The sources of leprosy infection in children is predominately due to the contact with active cases within families.
